Does anybody else get cheesed off with this transfer window farce? All the panic buying, the fear that your star players will be tempted away, teams stocking up with journeymen and squad players 'just in case', the mad frenzy as midnight approaches, the hope that we might at last get the signing we have all been crying out for for the last eight transfer windows, then all hopes crushed as the clock strikes twelve.

Please United, just for once can we get that elusive midfielder tied up ahead of the deadline instead of having to check if the lights are still burning at the Lane at minutes to twelve?
According to reports, Blackwell doubts that he will be making a further move for Tommy Smith, but has instructed his scouts to compile a list of potential targets.
I thought that would have been done before the season began, and updated daily, but true to form, it looks like a last minute scramble, and will probably result in no significant addition. I really hope I'm proved wrong here, and Blackwell can secure the services of that quality in the middle that we have needed for so long.

I never understand why people get so worked up hoping for us to sign someone good and/or expensive at the last minute. We never do business like this. I mean, have United given any indication whatsoever that they might be planning to sign another midfielder?

IMHO, the big midfield signing's already been made, and it's Williamson.

I reckon the most likely transfer window development will be Kilgallon's departure, with the Lescott deal the first in the chain of deals that will see this happen.

Must admit, that quote is wearing a bit thin and has been used many times in the last few years. As you say, it's hard to believe that the scouts identify a target and then shut up shop until instructed again.

According to another article based on the loss of Williamson, "Blackwell has been analysing a closely guarded list of potential targets" so who knows. Given that he's know about Williamson for a few weeks, you'd hope he'd been on to it for a while now.

Don't build your hopes up. We always do and we are ALWAYS disappointed. The transfer window is lunacy to me but Sky Sports and the like absolutely love it because they can do their transfer window countdown pieces.

Firstly, it generates higher fees as clubs scramble about for whatever they can get. The desperation is frightening as supporters (ourselves included) bay for a big signing to get excited about.

Secondly, it makes agents rich. Said agent touting very average championship player around would probably have got £500k in the past. Now said average championship player is worth more than double that as the window approaches.

Third, it unsettles players. Why do you think Killer hasn't signed his new contract? Mainly I am guessing because his agent is telling him to hold on at least until the transfer window shuts because if we tie him to a long contract we will demand top dollar, whereas should a Premiership club come in for him right now we will probably accept £2m and drop him off into the bargain.

I loathe the transfer window, it just exacerbates the greed within the game from all sides. The big clubs win and everyone else loses. There is so much wrong with football but eradicating this ridiculous scramble would be one step in the right direction.

Having only a limited period to sell players can sometimes work to the team's advantage, though.

For example, it's pretty clear that had there been no window Beattie would have been sold in mid September as soon as he was fit.

I Hate the transfer window, but I think that once its shut, we can get on with our season until January.

the transfer window should be open for 1 month pre-season....say mid June to mid July, then clubs and players can have a proper pre-season and be ready to hit the ground running. its absolute madness that you can prepare for a season but then lose a couple of important players after 5 or 6 games and be forced into panic buys to replace them.

I don't like the transfer window at all. Big clubs can leave it whilst the last minute to pick and choose who they want. Leaving the clbs that loose a player with no time to find a replacement.

Why can't we have a system similar to what is in junior football with transfers allowed until early December then thats it, everyone then manages with the squad they have.

It has to be last minute because the quality of player we are now looking at won't become available unless their current team can bring in someone better before hand.

Ched Evans for example was all lined up for last January but the deal couldn't happen because Roque Santa Cruz wasn't brought in. This season we had to wait for Tevez because City had already lost Sturridge.

If you are after players from our league then yes the business can be done early, but if you are looking at acquiring players from the league above you normally have to wait. Which is one explanation why the much talked about loan deal for Rose from Spurs would probably not happen till the last minute, if it is more than a rumour of course.
Tottenham won't want a young kid on the verge of the first team squad to be moved out only for them to need him due to injuries etc.

I thought we were going to get to pick from a wealth of Spurs players when we did the deal with Naughton & Walker?

In any case, I would have thought that any club that actually wanted to challenge the transfer window would be able to. Legally it has to be a restraint of trade.

No, because it only restricts the movement of those under contract. A free agent is not subject to any restraint as I understand it, because he can be signed at any point.

I wonder how long until there is a test case with someone wanting to give a month's notice that they will be leaving, as in most normal jobs, which would also then allow them to move in the transfer window, and for free.

Not really because you are allowed to negotiate in order to sign players you just aren't allowed to use them in any competition. Just as you can agree a deal for someone out of the window but it won't be processed until the window is open and therefore won't be registered. Therefore there isn't a restraint on trade, just a period of time which you have to be registered before in order to take part in the competition.

You sound as frustrated by it all as I do Bradders, but then we have been at it for a long time. You should know by now its the blades way.
The midfield will never get sorted if the past seasons are anything to go by.
I have made a mental to do some research over the better periods in our history to refresh my memory as to who were the players when we had good midfields playing.
I think these windows drive every one potty as I have been known to sit up till midmight refreshing the pages every few minutes.
Micklebring blade, now Mickle-blade has been known to drive down Cherry Street just before midnight to see if the lights were still on!
