I know there's been a few arguments on here about who'd be a good fit. who wouldn't and pushing the boat out moneywise and we can't all agree but here's a statement i think we can all come together on:
The ITK information this year has been wank.

Aims for - Hogan & Gallagher
Gets - Gregory & McGoldrick

How would everyone feel about that? Similar quality to what we have, proven at this level.

Nothing is a guarantee. Gallagher is a 'good age' and the more 'sexy' signing but you can't say he's been any more prolific than Gregory at this level and he's probably on a lot more money because of where he has come from i.e PL. None in 15 for MK Dons, 12 in 47 for Blackburn and 7 in 34 for Birmingham. Gregory got 10 in 47 last year in the Championship, 18 in 47 in League One the season before and 27 in 53 in League One and 9 in 41 in the Championship the prior season.

You delve deeper, Scott Hogan hasn't done it over a prolonged period. Had a good season at Rochdale ending 2014 with 19 goals in League Two, had one good season with Brentford notching 14 in 27 in the Championship after 7 in 7 the year before. He then managed 1 in 13 for Villa and 7 in 24. Why does he play so few games? Good for him but I'm surprised (I shouldn't be) that a club has put him on 35k per week after a very limited track record.

One interesting thing about McGoldrick, apart from the fact he's managed far more matches than Hogan over the past few seasons is that for every goal two goals he scores, he assists one other. 60 goals and 26 assists in 273 Championship matches which is at least a long period to judge him as an established Championship operator. In 83 Championship matches Hogan scored 28 and contributed 5 assists. In his 17 in 33 in League Two, he didn't assist at all.

I'm open minded as to who we get. Maybe when you scratch below the surface the two 'Headline' strikers we've been linked with might not be as effective for us as one or two who maybe aren't so high profile.

If we got Gregory and McGoldrick it might not be a disaster, but I don't think they fulfil Wilder's criteria of adding something different. It would be better than we had last year but I'd want another in as cover.

It would worry me in terms of the direction of travel of the club. We'd have a strikeforce aged 33, 32, 30, 30. We'd be in a worse position next summer and relegated in the near future if we carried on among these lines.

We need to plan for the future. It would also suggest that our manager may not be sticking around too long as this is an obvious concern.

I'm also not convinced about Hogan and Gallagher.

Neither Gregory or McGoldrick are what I would class as quality or top end championship players (all about perspective though)

If CW tries to dress them up as such I won’t be fooled.

As things stand the squad is weaker than last season.

The more I think about it the more I think I'd prefer Marriott and Eisa. They'd be our players to mould with potential resale value.

Gallagher and Hogan are going to eat up all the wage bill, there's no guarantees they'd be successful and if they were we wouldn't be able to afford to buy them anyway so we'd be back to square one at the end of the season.

In the meantime Ched will be out on loan and if he comes good we'd have him to come back at Xmas.

Your last sentence sums up my thoughts overall. I’m not convinced we can’t find better alternatives for far less than these two would cost.

Would you not agrrr that if McGoldrick & Gregory are replacements for Evans and Donaldson, then the squad would be stronger?

Who would you prefer us to sign, if they aren't your preffered choices?

These two players might be decent squad players but my views are that they aren't an upgrade on Billy and Leon, they are never going to be any better than what they are now, and they are not the signings you would expect from a club that averages 26000.

You're probably right but so many of us seem to have pumped ourselves so full of hype that anyone on wages less than £20k a week will seem like a massive show of "lack of ambishun"

Tbf crowds mean nothing these days.

Gate receipts are c£10m per year I believe. Even if we sold out it’s barely enough to cover a transfer fee let alone The wages of of one player.

If you’re going to do it you need to be bankrolled and gamble on meeting the ffp regulations. Look how close Wednesday are sailing to the wind.

I would agree that if they are then they are stronger however as of right now the squad is weaker.

They also wouldn’t be better than the first 11 so regardless of if they sign or not there had been no improvement there.

He'd be a great signing for them but in today's market how much would we want for him even if he was for sale (which he isn't unless wilder decided to use his wages to help pay for Gallagher)?

A proven goalscorer at championship and divisiob one level he has to be worth 3m minimum even at his age

Saying that the squad is weaker in it's current form (during pre-season with several weeks of window to go) is hardly insightful: it's obvious.

I'm pretty sure most of those breaks are 100% incorrect!

Beattie was 4m.
Kilgallon was 1.75m rising to 2m.
Dellas was a very small amount, a few hundred thousand.
Akinbiyi was 1.25m rising to 1.75m

Oh and that famous right winger Brian Deane - oh dear!

That site records the fees in Euros at the time of purchase then translates them back to GBP at today's rate. Therefore, using Beattie as an example, £4m at €1.50/£1 (as it was in June 2007) means they recorded the transfer at €6m. At today's rate, €6m is £5.4m.

We bought Dellas before Greece adopted the Euro so evidently their database can't cope with Drachma.
