Here's a question, who are our top 10 signings in terms of fees paid? There's a bit of differing information out there but some of these are scary!

P. S. Don't cheat :cool:

Came up with Beattie and Claude Davis before cheating and going on Transfermarkt. Yes, your right some scary ones but I'll not spoil it by naming names.

Beattie
Hulse
Shelton
Hutchinson
Ebbrell
Brayford
Akinbiyi
Kilgannon
Davis
Evans

And you expect us to believe you knew all ten without cheating JC?
Talk about double f*****g standards!!

In relative terms I think somebody like Alan Young must be up there

Did we pay £200,000 for him ?

Doesn't sound a lot nowadays, but this was at a time when absolute superstars of the game were costing £500,000

I'd have said those two. Maybe I'd add Ahmed Fathi to that? I can't remember how much we paid for him. And maybe Akinbiyi? Mostly in the Warnock era I'd have said. What about Dean Saunders as well? I think if we are looking for 10 such players this could take us back to the 1980's and the likes of Chris Guthrie for £100k!

Alan Young...oh yes, remember him well. Always entered the pitch with wet hair. Most players have a shower after the match, but he seemed to have one before. Signed from Arsenal and we thought we'd got a new cult hero. The kop songwriters got busy immediately and created a song for him with lyrics that went, "Alan Young, Alan Young, Alan Young" - sang to a traditional 4/4 time signature - simple and effective. Unfortunately Young was somewhat injury prone. He could break a limb playing cards on the team bus on the way to the ground. I don't know how much he cost but the £200k rings a bell so maybe he's one to add to the list. Best forgotten otherwise though.

Dean Hammond.
Michael Higdon.
Oh hang on I've fucked up......

Thought we signed him from Leicester!

Off the top of my head I'd say

Beattie
Hulse
Davis
Sharp (2006)
Shelton
Brayford
Henderson
Akinbiyi
Deane (1997)
Killgallon

Not sure if Stead would be in there. Stuart was part of a swap involving Ward and Tiler so depends how you value them. Hutchison, Horsefield and Naysmith were about a million each I think too so would be close.

Without looking at previous posts, my guess would be...

Beattie
Davis
Evans
Sharp (in 2007)
Shelton
Hulse
Naysmith
Carney
Henderson
Brayford

Thinking top to bottom (I know I won't get them all)
Beattie 4
Evans 3
Sharp 2 (but we had a sell on clause so didn't have to pay the full amount or something)
Davis 2
Brayford 2
Akinbiyi 1.7
Hulse 1.7
Deane 1.7 (I've got 1.7 in my head now for some reason)
Henderson 1.7
Kilgallen 1.2

(Sure it's not right and I wouldn't have remembered all of them without everybody else shouting out, putting numbers on them helped

Also was desperate to stick Don Hutchinson in there but know that was only a million

There's 23 million pound signings according to what looks like the most reliable website.

My guesses. It's noticeable that we've never spent big on a central midfielder - probably why we've played such abysmal football for much of my time watching us.

1 Beattie £4m
2= Evans £3m (inc add-ons)
2= Davis £3m
4= Henderson £2m (shudder)
4= Shelton £2m
6= Hulse £1.75m
6= Kilgallon £1.75m
8= Sharp £1.5m (£2m less 25% sell on)
8= Brayford £1.5m
10= Akinbiyi £1.2m
10= Horsfield £1.2m

And to add to the fun: record outgoings:
1 Walker £7.8m (inc sell on)
2 Naughton £5m
3 Jagielka £4m
4 Maguire £3.95m (inc sell on)
5 Beattie £3.5m
6= Lowton £3m
6= Davis £3m
8 Tonge £1.8m
9 Hulse £1.75m
10 Sharp £1.15m

Have a like for both the useful information and for not misspelling Killgannon, Tongue, McGuire, Beatty and Sharpe.

Interestingly, the same website has us showing an overall deficit of just over £1.5M in the transfer market. All presumption of course with most fees being 'undisclosed' these days.

Those fees are odd - my guess is that they're stored in Euros on the transfermarkt servers then translated into local currency at the spot rate. We bought Beattie for £4m when the rate was €1.5/£1 so it's recorded at €6m, which at today's rate of €1.1/£1 means they're showing £5.4m...

It's the same issue with the world record deals when they're reported in pounds. Any list in sterling will show the record going from Zidane to Kaká. However, Zidane cost Real Madrid €75m whereas Kaká 'only' cost €65m: the difference in pounds is due to the movement in exchange rate (Zidane at the time was £46.8m but now it would be reported at £67.5m; Kaká was £56m but would be £58.5m now).

Yep, and probably guesswork in the 1st place !
