Tom Lawrence

I hope if we sign him its for depth at the AM position rather than to be a starter. Towards the end of last season we played 2 AMs (MGW/Berge). Presumably Ndiaye takes one of those spots with Brewster/Sharp back in at ST. The other AM position is obviously Berge's if he stays.

If Berge leaves we will have to bring in another AM from the PL on loan. We can't go into the season with just two AMs in the squad if that is one of the core ways we plan to play. Admittedly Doyle/Osborn/Brewster could fill in at AM , but that feels sub-optimal.

I think Lawrence gives us good depth and the opportunity to change how we line up (assuming we don’t get 63847363 injured to strikers again).

We could play (like with Duffy)
ST ST
CAM

Or (like last season with MGW & Berge)
ST
CAM CAM

Or (like in the PL)
ST ST

CM CM CM

ST - billy, Brewster, mcburnie, ndiaye, Lawrence (osula, Jebbison)
CAM - ndiaye, Lawrence, Berge
CM - Berge, Fleck, Norwood, Doyle, Coulibaly

That bottom option is tosh, 5x strikers, 8 in midfield and no defence or keeper.

If we sign Lawrence I'd hope and assume he'll be on an average wage for our first team, incentivised by the team winning matches and heavily incentivised by promotion.

I'm not confident enough that he's worth being a top earner. Though I imagine he's a better pro after a season of being captain for Rooney. But the red cards are the cherry on top of my overall concerns.
He's apparently on £27. He's a free transfer in the peak years of his playing career off the back of a better season. He'll want at least that and someone in this league will pay it if he waits.

And by all accounts Rangers are not in the running anymore so it is us or Derby.

He's hardly got us over a barrell, has he?

I've alluded to this challenge before of twist or stick but there comes a point in the window where you have to make a sensible call.

If we think losing Berge is a possibility then you have to decide how much appetite for risk you have. If Berge leaves, then Lawrence could potentially become a legitimate regular.

I'd prefer Berge to stay. He was doing really well further forward and Coulibaly coming in, as well as Doyle means we are less reliant on him to provide a central midfield option.

But if Berge leaves near the close of the window, then who comes in? Maybe you get lucky and someone like Januzaj is available still and he'd rather play for a year than not. Or maybe you don't and you end up replacing one of your main starters with a youngster on loan hoping they step up.

Season starts in less than a month so how much do you leave to chance?

For those deriding Lawrence and I haven't seen enough to comment, only his stats of 11+5 in 38 which are more than acceptable and his goals against us. But if not him, then who?

But, I think will Berge will be gone by September 1st.

Agree with all of this. I think Berge will be sold.
Head says he’ll be sold heart hopes he’s not. Only thing that keeps clicking in my head is playing with the likes of Berge could be the lure Hecky is using to make us look like real contenders to the likes of Doyle and Anel.

I would rather cure this signing and others now rather than after we sell Berge. Once we’ve sold him there will be 0s being added all over the place

I was always of the opinion that Berge would not be sold until all our business is done, purely because once the club rakes in £20m or whatever the fee is, all selling clubs move their goal posts and demand a bigger fee knowing we have more money to play with.

I hope he stays, but should Leeds or any other Prem club show their hand, he's off

I'm starting to think Berge stays.

  • Leeds are out
  • Can't see him going to Forest/Fulham and risking another relegation
  • No-one on the continent can justify the price-tag (he hasn't done enough for the CL teams, and the rest haven't got the cash).
  • He hasn't done enough to earn a spot at a top 10 PL club yet, in part because....
  • there are still question marks over his best position. We all know its at AM, but he is still being scouted and put forward as a DM. I can't imagine the tape on him as a DM for us is particularly persuasive.
  • At a push I could see Brighton/Brentford being in for him having lost Bissouma/Ericksen, but Brighton would have to believe he can defend at a PL DM level (he can't), and Brentford would need to believe he is an AM (which they probably won't, yet).

Anyway, I like Lawrence on a free for depth, I don't like him as a replacement for Berge. All being well we sign him, and he rarely plays because we have better options.

Yeah and then once they're all in, "Oh, sorry. A bid came in. Say goodbye to your new pal, Berge, lads."

Lawrence would be a great signing. A proven Championship performer that scored 1 in 3 last season for a team that was built on keeping clean sheets, oh and available on a free. Duffy's replacement in the making.

If nothing else he is v.good competition/options up there and that's what you want.
Means we can play with 1 striker two AMs or one just behind etc. Of course should Berge leave that means we already have Lawrence and N'Diaye as players capable of being AM role too. N'Diaye can also play up top too.

Doyle has been brought in to compete with Fleck/Norwood I think.
You'd think Fleck, but sounds like Doyle hast the ability to dictate and pick a pass too so who knows!

It's almost like the transfer window only actually opened 5 days ago isn't it. Not in May like most on here thought
10 June according to Sky Sports, not that it really matters, we seem to be doing business, which is the main thing.
