Outgoing? Tom Cannon

Here's all his goals for Preston. How many times have we seen him receive the ball in these positions? Need to get him central and tell him to stay there!

What’s most concerning about that is we never played like that when Wilder was in charge, so why did he want to bring him to the club? All last season was us up against a settled defence because we take so long to build up play.

Could work if Selles can get this rapid turnover football working.

And for further comparison... Watkins at Cannons age was in L2 with Exeter
That doesn't mean Cannon is further along in his development. More that Watkins was born in an area with very little outside interest from other clubs and Cannon is from Liverpool. Swap birthplace and I'd imagine they have very different career paths.

Cannon was born 20 years too late. The 'does nothing but might get you 1 in 3 goals in a good season' forward just doesn't really exist now. Unless you are Haaland, you have to be a well rounded footballer

I'm pretty sure Chelsea, Man Utd, Man City and Arsenal etc. were scouting the lower leagues. That's one of the reasons we don't see players coming up through the divisions as often these days.
They just take them when they're young

What about the footballers 😲

I think this revisionism about us not giving him the ball in the right areas is exactly that he has been given the ball in good areas ,similar to those Preston goals and done nothing
Even if he was short on confidence which he clearly is I've never seen such a lack of effort to get involved in a game some other way even just physically challenging or closing down

I watched a scouting report on him and his strengths are his movement he makes good early runs but our midfield just don't play those pases
Peck doesnt pass the ball at all until he's unnecessarily ran in.a circle first
And hamer and o hare are too busy seeing who can needlesly give it away the most

Not from that deep into the South West. Ampadu, Cooper, Watkins. All made it to first team football at SW clubs. Jack Stephen's to Southampton is about as far away as it gets for playersdown there

If a suitable replacement could have been brought in, he would now be wearing a Preston shirt for the rest of the season.

Obviously our target / targets never materialised and we pulled the plug.

If you believe this doesn’t speak volumes about our £10m forward only brought in a few months ago and the relative “importance” his place in the squad is now regarded, more fool you !!!!

Michael Owen mentioned this in a interview with Rio Ferdinand last week. The lack of proper strikers available for England after Kane and Watkins. How the two up top has vanished from the game and how he couldn't play the one up top if he was player today. He'd be shunted out wide left, so he'd be cutting in to shoot on his right foot.
Sure he mentioned years ago that Emile Heskey was his favourite partner when he played for England.
It’s because 10-15 years ago everyone wanted a Messi/Xavi/Iniesta/Robben/Ribery type forward player, and your traditional centre forwards got left in the lower leagues. It’s starting to swing round again now.

It's difficult to defend a striker that has only scored 1 in 26 games, the price tag around his neck doesn't help. If he was a £1mill striker, most would be saying he is still young and you get what you pay for. I have been critical of him and in some ways too critical as you get into the nature of, he should have scored that rather than, it was a difficult chance or a good save. Watching him play he does make some good runs and picks up positions, but doesn't get the service. That being said, I can see why Hecky "admires him" and you do wonder where this Tom Cannon is whilst on loan at PNE, he looked like a confident striker that is worth all the money.

Watching the highlight reels just makes me even more frustrated with the lad to be honest, it's like he had a lobotomy at some point between playing there and signing for us.

You do wonder! - It's crazy how much of a different player he looks and a fair few of the goals are solo efforts too. That 1st one seemed easy as you like but a great finish, also some decent poacher goals too.

Watching his highlights re-affirms my view he wasn't keen on the move and was pushed either by Leicester or likely his agent to agree to the move. I would imagine with him doing alright with Stoke, why would he want to move mid-season when he could have stayed and still got a move in the summer.
