The title race

If we average two points a game then Bolton must win 6 out of 7 to level with us. If we do get two points per game and they win 6 and draw 1 they'll deserve the title.

We will average two points a game - they won't win 6 games. IMO :)
just win the home games

Not many to pick from in the last 20 years but here's the last 50 or so

1960-61 Finished second

1970-71 Finished second

1983-84 Finished third (three promoted)

1988-89 Finished second

1989-90 Finished second

2005-06 Finished second

This suggests that in promotion years we go up as bridesmaids. which was the point I made

What about 1981-2? Finished top with 96 points and only 4 defeats all season.

We did indeed
However my post was to Pete trying to show that we usually get promoted as runners up

1st in Division Four was the minimum requirement really

On the face of it, yes. But we were in a real mess at that time and still suffering from the financial consequences of building the South Stand. At the start of that season things didn't look particularly rosy and they didn't improve when we threw away a 2 goal lead to draw our first game of the season (at home) against mighty Hereford (no disrespect intended towards them). I remember feeling completely depressed after that game and thought there was no way back. And after 5 games things were no better, having added 2 wins (Colchester and Wigan) and 2 defeats (Stockport and Hull).

However, a bit like this season, we then rallied and only lost two of our remaining 41 games and didn't lose all season at Bramall lane. That was pretty emphatic.

I would also say that in 1989-90 we only missed out on the second division title on goal difference, and in 1970-71 we may have finished runners up but we really stepped up to the plate in the end of season matches that mattered..

Apart from 2011-12 we have generally been pretty successful when involved in tight promotion races. Our major disasters have usually occurred when we've been involved in relegation fights.

It makes absolutely no sense that the best possible finish was "the minimum requirement".

what a good result yesterdays was
Scunthorpe kept alive their hopes of finishing 2nd so have every incentive to beat Bolton when they meet, and it lessened bradfords possible maximum total
and Southend 4 points clear of millwall who have a game in hand so Southend too will need to beat bolton
both testing away games for bolton

we have 2 games v bradford and millwall , but the home advantage gives us the edge
neither will relish coming here

fleetwood have 3 away games on the trot after swindon at home
Oldham , Oxford and Peterborough , just cant see them getting 9 points from them
if they lose 1 or 2 our promotion target falls with every loss
its looking like 86 will be beyond 3rd downwards , so 2 wins might be enough for purely going up

Exactly Blade too long , if we win three of our last matches then Bolton have to win five to be ahead of us on points. Win two and surely Fleetwood won't catch us. Not there yet but even with our record I can't see us throwing this one away. Champions would be nice, second is fine by me.

Second is not fine by me. We deserve to be champions as by far the best football team in this division.

Won't ya tell me.........
Where have all the Bolton fans gone........

First they wouldn't leave us alone....
Now they've crawled back under their stone...
Won't ya tell me.......
