The thank you Nick Montgomery thread

I think it was the 2nd leg against Liverpool where he got injured that he was really having one of his best performances. They must have been jumping for joy when he went off.

Thanks Monty, not many will judge your play as that all to often used word of legend but in terms of loyalty in this day and age you certainly are.

Come back and visit when you get the chance.

Just to add to my two pennuth, thanks Monty for your time as a Blade. As others have mentioned, I thought his best season for us was in the Prem. Standout performance against Spurs. Hero's performance against Arsenal (still can picture him coughing his guts up as he came off the pitch!) and a sweet ball in for Danny Webber's goal at St James'. Dizzy heights, well it was from the back at that stand! For such a combatative midfielder, never saw an ounce of malice, and when he got knocked down, he just got back up again..I didn't think there was a place for him in the current side, time to move on but am pleased for him and his family that an exciting opportunity awaits them..All the best down under. UTB

Good Luck Monty. Could NEVER be accused of not giving everything for the cause. Says it all when a Liverpool fan friend knows who he is.

I've never been a big Monty fan, his odd "flash of genius" easily surpassed by mediocraty, (and that's being generous) however, a true professional he was. He knew his limitations and mainly tried to keep it simple, although he also failed miserably at that too at times. One thing I can't fault was his effort, 100% every time and for that I thank you Nick as we all love a tryer, especially in a Blades shirt.

You have been through hell with your young family and a fresh start is probably what you all need. Good luck in Aus, hopefully a simple 10 yard sideways pass will be a bit easier down under...!

I remember him getting he first in a 4-0 win over Birmngham, playing in a (what would become) unusual role on the right wing.

Didn't think that he'd still be here 10 years later, and certainly didn't realise that he wouldn't be as prolific as he looked like he could have been on that days performance...

Cheers Monty, testimonial is due...

Monty was one of the true stars of the Warnock days - days when United were gritty and steely battlers. There are times when every team needs a player to dominate the midfield - and Monty was that man for us. A Blade through and through. He should be fondly remembered.

The stick he got (on here as much as anywhere else) says far much more about the limitations of those who criticised than it does about his own abilities.

Good luck in Aus Monty - don't drink the Tooheys!! :)

I remember that. I think the second was a Michael Brown special, a taster of what would become a regular feature a year or so later. I think Pesch grabbed two as well, leading to a lot of jokes about how he'd be sleeping in the box room that night.

In that match he also put in a very good cross from which Peschisolido scored.

This.......

Good luck and many thanks for your courage, determination and endevours. One of the best ball winners and opposition attack breakers United have had in many generations.

Nick Montgomery was not the most gifted of players, but gave 100% commitment. To me playing him just in front of the back 4 to break play down was his best position. He gave us his best years, and gave us some good times. Good Luck to him.....

For those of us able to remember the John Harris side, it seems to me that Monty occupied a similar place in the side to Frank Barlow - he did all the hard work, and gave the ball to Currie, Woodward etc. If anything went wrong, the terrace was always on his back, even when one of the big names had cocked up.

I always liked Monty because you always knew that if one or two of the team didn't fancy it, it wouldn't be him.

Agree with the above comments, 100% Blade, he is comming to the Bury match according to Cressy Before he goes to oz,

Met Monty off the pitch and he was an absolute gent.

He's been a constant through some great years at Bramall Lane (and some bad ones admittedly although not down to him). Just wish he hadn't scored at Tranmere so I could've said I'd seen all his goals.

Really hope that his family love it in Oz and have a wonderful life over there.

All the best Monty.

Throughout the period that Monty has been at the club, he would certainly have been one of the first names on my team sheet - and managers have consistently agreed. Passing may not have been a strong point but Monty reads the game exceptionally well - how many times have we seen him pop up in just the right place to make a telling tackle or a vital block? That ability along with his fearless and rugged approach made him consistently one of the best combative midfielders in the Championship - and he gave a number of Premier League midfielders a torrid time too in our short time up there.
I wish him all the best in Oz and thank him for his consistency and loyalty. Whoever plays next to him is about to find their life made easier.
Cheers and G'Day Monty !!

Am I missing something here!
Monty may have been an absolute gent, loyal and a 100% trier - But for that he got paid much more than most on this forum and enjoyed the lifestyle afforded to 'Professional Footballers' -a priveledged few who are paid for doing something most of us pay (or paid) matchsubs week in week out to run around on a local park.
As a professional footballer it shouldn't be beyond anyone to be able to pass to the same colour shirt more often than not or shoot on target at the goal more than once or twice a season.
Sorry guys, Monty is not a TC, Woodward, Hodgy, Kelly, Hodges, Tracey, McCall, Brownie, etc etc etc - he ran around alot, did a reasonable job man marking when he had to but his first touch was abysmal, his goalscoring record shocking, and his passing ability virtually non existant!
I wish him well but sorry guys, if he was the first name on the teamsheet then we were struggling
Good luck in Oz Monty, we will remember you - how can we forget!!

To all those that have pointed out Monty's short comings and their opinion that he was not good enough to be a pro footballer never mind playing for the Blades for 12 years

HOW COME YOU LOT ARE POSTING ON A FORUM ABOUT THE BLADES AND NOT PULLING ON THE SHIRT IF IT WAS THAT SIMPLE?

Good luck Monts and thanks for all the commitment, dedication, loyalty and service you have delivered to this club that I love. All the best to you and yours in Oz.

Yes, you are missing something (or overlooking it). I can't see in any post on this or any other thread that anyone has compared Montgomery's football abilities with those of TC, Woodward etc.

Also Montgomery was a defensive midfielder, not an attacking midfielder. His primary role in the side was not to create chances or to shoot.

How many times a season did McCall shoot? In all competitions McCall scored a total of 2 goals or once every 44.5 games. Montgomery scored 9 league and 2 cup goals or once every 35.5 games. But noone would question McCall's value to the side.

McCall could pass.

Which is irrelevant to the particular point I was making.

If Montgomery's goalscoring record was (to quote Fieryblade) "shocking", McCall's must be extremely shocking because it was worse than Montgomery's. However, as neither player had an attacking role the number of goals scored or shots made is not really an issue. Therefore it isn't really fair to use those statistics as a stick to beat Mongomery over the head with - especially when the same statistics are not used against the player with the worst record out of the two in that department.

just out of interest what would people say montys greatest achievement was as a sheffield united player ? i mean individually and not as part of the team

Most of his performances in the premier league, but in particular at home against Tottenham. A close second was the way he marked Vierra out of the game in the FA Cup replay in early 2005.
