just out of interest what would people say montys greatest achievement was as a sheffield united player ? i mean individually and not as part of the team

Probably in delivering 12 years loyal and unselfless service at one club during its rise to and demise from the Prem and the ensuing turmoil within.

If you are asking about one moment or one game in particular I suspect his best goal might be the one at Tranmere last year and his best game the 4-0 away win at the Dirties when he scored and bossed their midfield about.

And didn't I just love winning a manager of the month award in the following seasons YEP ( leeds evening paper) fantasy football league with the team name Leeds 0 Blades4.

Enjoyed the game too mind you.

I remember him having a couple of good games as a marauding wide right player when he first got into the team. Seems like years ago now.

Ken lad this notion about footballers possessing loyalty is absolute rubbish. If he had been offered 2k a week by Birch and say Millwall had offered him £4k a week he'd have gone - and quite rightly so if looking after his family is the priority. You think he would have said I love SUFC and all the clappers who put up with my incompetence? No, he would have gone. Please stop this talk along the lines of yes we know he was shit but he stayed with us so that is OK.

Only answered the question Mica - was not moralising on whether he was a world beater or not and I bet he did have the oppty of jumpng ship on the way but as Alan Biggs has repeatedly stated, "SUFC is an easy club to join but a hard one to leave" - that's his take on what ex players have said to him.

Lets all give him the send off he deserves tomorrow. Doesnt matter if you think he is shite or not he has been a good servant to our club.

Hope he gets a great reception tomorrow. He was a central part of the promotion team, and surprised a lot of people with some great performances in the Premiership. Hope he succeeds with the Mariners - and man-marks Del Piero out of the game when they meet...

What a servant. He could have left at any point but chose to stick by us through thick and thin. You don't get loyalty like that these days. Not very often anyway. Shows he really cared about the club. He got criticised for his weaknesses, but i only saw his strengths. His workrate, determination and man-marking was excellent. Abilities that were showcased at Craven Cottage around 12 years ago. That fantastic man-marking job he did that day against a very good Fulham side will always stick in my mind. When the chips were down, Monty would dig in. Without him, our more creative players wouldn't have been able to flourish. His style will never be fashionable, but it is a vitally important to have a player like that in any side. He could create on the odd occassion too, remember his run and perfect cross for Danny Webber up in Geordieland?!?!? We were very lucky to have him for the best part of his career. For what he's given to club he deserves to see the last few seasons out in the Austrailian sunshine. Enjoy it Monty mate, all the best, thanks for the good times and not deserting us during the bad.

What a touching tribute it was to the man when they played a brief snippet of Leaving on a Jet plane" before kick off.
