In the style of the Mick Rooker thread can I start a thread dedicated to those who want to say thanks to Monty? There are other threads with some accolades but those also populated with many comments otherwise. Maybe post your derogatory comments there?

Monty was never a skillful player and never will be, but no one can ever doubt his committment when on the pitch. He is a battler, a stopper, a tackler and a thorn in the side of opponents. He was never nasty (like Doyle can be) or malicious.

He epitomises the spirit and the fight that Neil Warnock brought to the club. Think back to all those matches where the Blades were underdogs fighting to get into the next round of the cup or into the holy grail of the top flight and Monty was in the thick of things. We should thank him for that.

The fighting spirit is now all but gone and replaced with pretty football. Time will tell which we prefer and which will fill the ground with passionate Blades singing their hearts out to urge on the team.

Monty was part of a group of players that gave us some of the best times to be a Blade and for that I thank him. I am sorry he has left without the chance to sing and clap goodbye; I wish him all the best.

UTB for ever

Totally agree, Peeza. No, he wasn't the world's best, but you don't make a living near the top for many years if you're totally useless. Surprised Warnock didn't snap him up.

All the best, Monty. Just a pity some have to have a scapegoat...

Well put Peezablade. I do hope that they give the guy a chance to say goodbye. Some disliked him but there are plenty who supported him

I know the lad and I wish him a great future in Oz. He's a smashing bloke as well. The first time I was introduced to him was years ago at a birthday bash for one of the family (they were in the Roundhay Fox in Leeds) and he took time to chat with Mrs BoSS and I and stayed with us for nearly half an hour.

We used the same David Lloyd club and he would always find time for a natter. I once shared a jacuzzi with him and Andy Monkhouse!

It will be great for the kids and he'll be able to contribute to the Mariners - great place to end your football career, Monty.

Thanks for the passion, thanks for being a Blade and good luck

Yes, thanks for 100% effort and determination for 12 years. Monty was a vital part of the promotion side and also had good games in the Premiership. All teammates and staff (and everybody who've met him) have spoken highly of him as a person, and his professionalism. This move seems a good solution for all parties, so good luck to Monty.

Thanks Monty, effort never less than 100%, just a shame his ability didn't develop at the same pace as some of his colleagues. I also had the good fortune to meet him and interview him, really nice bloke.

Good luck Nick to you and your still new family.

Good luck Monty, my abiding memory will be when he nailed the Arsenal player with a perfect crunching tackle in the first minute of the Prem game at the Lane (think it was the guy nicknamed The Beast), he set the standard that day and after that the guy was totally ineffective as he clearly didn't fancy it.

He always gave his everything ,put himself through the pain barrier and played with injuries when he probably shouldnt. played under 6 managers who all picked him first choice. Good luck .

Never seen a more committed player, or one with more courage.

As the OP says, he's the final link to the last good times we had at United. Whenever we were giant killing in that era, it was Monty who manned the barricades while Tonge and Jags matched our opponents for class. The trio were Warnock's 'heart' of United and for once it wasn't hyperbole.

The 2-1 win over Redknapp's Spurs was perhaps the most energetic, rugged and destructive midfield performance of Monty's time here. The sheer physicality of it showed how much he had to put in in order to contribute at that level, and in retrospect was a signpost that his career would end earlier than most. He simply didn't have the option to retreat into a more sedate role on the pitch.

So, as injuries and life's real priorities have reined him in, I'd suggest he fully deserves to spend the twilight of his career in the sunshine. The Aussies like to think they're tough in sports. Let's see how many flinch at the prospect of a 50/50 with Monty. :)

Thanks Monty. Flogging your guts out 400+ times for Sheffield United. There's not many done that. I never liked that song.

There's only one Nick Montgomery.

(I have a feeling Bettsyblade likes this thread.)

Random thought. Will Monty be given a chance to say goodbye today? Certainly hope so and we can show some appreciation.

(I reckon the only person who'd clap more than me would be Pinchy.....)

Cheers Monty!! Enjoy your new life down under.

I hope we keep this thread to positive posts only.

And, thanks to Stephen Quinn too!!

Best wishes to a long time servant of the club. Oddly, he seemed to play some of his best football for us in our all too brief stay in the premier league. I will never forget the home match against Tottenham when for about 90% of the game he and Tonge controlled the midfield with apparent ease.

Farewell Monty. I'll always remember the pass for Danny Webber's goal at Newcastle. Two thousand blades going berserk and the rest of St James Park silent. Walking home I really thought we'd survive and prosper in the Premier League.
