No matter who scores the first goal tomorrow, I’d like to see us stay positive and make sure that we get the second. I don’t think we’ve responded well at all after the first goal (which cliched experts tell us is very important):
Conceded first v Wolves. Panicked and conceded another.
Conceded first v Villa. Looked deflated after the goal and lost.
Conceded very late v Leeds. No time for a response.
Conceded first v Arsenal. Looked deflated and gave up.
Conceded first v Fulham. Responded well and scored (then went defensive again).
Scored first v Liverpool. Lost our intensity quickly, sat back and lost.
Conceded first v Man City. Looked deflated and gave up.
Scored first v Chelsea. Lost our intensity quickly, sat back and lost.
Conceded first v West Ham. Looked deflated and gave up.
Conceded first v West Brom. Responded quite well but couldn’t score.
Conceded first v Leicester. Responded well and equalised.
Conceded first v Southampton. Looked deflated and gave up.
Scored first v Man Utd. Lost our intensity quickly, sat back and lost.
When we’ve scored first, our opponents have stepped up and taken advantage of our negativity. When we concede first, we don’t seem to respond in that same way.
It’s a combination of psychology and game management - things that we were very good at last season. Hopefully something that CWAK will work on with the players.
