Anyone else a bit unnerved by how...sensible this all seems?

Not done a daft thing, not gone for a cheap option, not had a punt on an unknown, not opted for a name from the merry-go round, not gone for a Bladey Blade option and hope it works (which obviously just did). Just gone out and got a good manager with experience in what we want to achieve.

Not very like us at all is it?

Wilder was a sensible appointment of course but, yes, this does seem very positive.

This is just what we needed (I bet the ST Renewal site crashes this afternoon) - there is some real basis for hope now.

And a big feather in the Prince's cap - it seems he's serious about taking us forward - that's all the fans need to know and he keeps building our trust.

Well done Blades !

Wilder obviously turned out well but at the time it seemed like the cheap option and a name to try and appease fans while we struggled. Some were for it but there's more than a few like myself who needed to be proven wrong.

However Jokanovic works out there's hardly anyone who thinks this is a bad move. Adkins is the only one who comes close for this level of positivity and rare footballing consensus.

As was Adkins at the time.

Edit nicksufc got their before me.

Is that the one where the fans wanted Robinson or Roberto Di Matteo instead and Wilder was the Blady Blade option?

Since Adkins...

Adkins biggest mistake was giving that shitty squad a second chance. Albeit he might’ve had his hands tied a little, especially as the majority were dining out on contracts Nigel and his buddy Mal lavished on them. That picture of Baxter with his big grin at the start of pre season still pisses me off, got off with murder there.

Jokanovic needs to be allowed to make the changes he feels are necessary and to have backing wherein we can attract players who buy into his philosophy.

Always look on the bright side of life , de-dum ........ de-dum , de-dum, de-dum.

You should have seen my next example: Robson. He was a cheque book manager given a cheque book. There was some logic there. SJ is a cheque book manager who may or may not be given the cheque book. If it's the latter - is he any good? The horrendous standard of the other candidates makes his appointment more palatable in my eyes. I don't get this overwhelming optimism before the transfer window has even opened though.

Best appointment since Adkins.

I still think we'll fail miserably next season though.

Like Adkins.

Happy with this...
Even happier if there's a proper transfer budget to go with it....
Even happier still if the right person is holding the purse strings...

We had 16 players out if contract at the end of the season and next to no money to reinvest as Weir and Clough had spunked the Prince's investment, largely on shite. Murphy was then quickly out of the door. The bit of money he did have he wasted. Realistically noone stood a chance of promotion as the out of contract players didn't give a shit. Adkins loss was Wilder's gain as he could rebuild - albeit from a low base - once their contracts expired.
I'm not sure as SJ will have a major influence on signings.

You have a short memory.

The last time we showed ambition and went out to bring in ”the best” manager with a tried and tested track record was Nigel Adkins.

He spoke really well and was so positive...it’s probably the most excited I’ve been about any managerial appointment.
So when he failed...it hit me harder than most.....I was at that Scunthorpe home match (Adkins final game).

We had no system and little desire....I thought if NA can‘t get us promoted then no one can.
It suddenly dawned on me we be in league 1 for another 10 years and become another Notts County....it was my lowest point in 45 years.
When Wilder joined I wasn’t enthused.....his first season in league 1 is probably the most meaningful I’ve witnessed....talk about rising from the ashes,

Adkins is banished from my memory thank you very much.

I disagree completely. I don't think there was any logic. I think McCabe just wanted to get him in because he was star struck. He fancied a photo on his wall with the former England captain so appointed him as our manager.

I think us supporters were pretty much all against the appointment at the time weren't we? Certainly that's the way I recall it.

McCabe actually explained why he appointed Robson.

Remember he was trying to rule the world...buying clubs in China, Australia, Hungary and Belgium.
He explained that he wanted to improve our international profile...basically to improve our reputation on the world stage.
His 1st choice manager was Kenny Dalglish...he also asked ex England manager to be director of football...both politely refused.

His 2nd choice was Brian Robson...anyone under 40 might not realise that Robson was Captain Marvel...known through out the world as one of Man Utds best ever players. He had a record of managing at West Brom and Middlesboro both similar sized clubs to us...he got Middlesboro promoted and (unlike Warnock) managed to avoid relegation from the PL with West Brom.

There were concerns at the time that Robson might be past his best...so the logic was to appoint the best assistant manager who was an expert on tactics.
Brian Kidd was highly rated as the best coach in the game (he‘s now working with Pep at Man City) so Robson would be used to attract loan top players (Hugo Eghiogue and Gary Cahill said their main reason for joining us was to work with their hero Brian Robson) with Kidd working on coaching and tactics......remember the plan was to play a passing style instead of Warnocks fast long ball.

Early games we showed excellent passing controlling possesion, however our attacks were too slow...there was little goal mouth action...it was like watching a game of chess. However the football was decent but it was a culture shock for many of our supporters who preferred hoofball lower standard but plenty of goal mouth action.

After a few weeks our fans started booing the constant sideways passing football just keeping possession at all costs.
So Robson changed style and went more long ball...the problem then became we were stuck in between styles with half the team playing a nice patient passing game and half playing long ball. We looked a mess as though we didn’t know what we were doing and Robson’s post match interviews were even more embarrassing. He said the same stuff after every match and it never linked to the actual match....based on his interviews it seemed he didn’t know what he was doing.....they would have probably been better interviewing Brian Kidd to gain a better insight. Robbo was correctly sacked.

Yes. At the time Wilder I don't think Wilder had any experience above League Two. I can believe someone at the club knew more than I did, and he went on to be a huge success (I'm still gutted he's not with us), but let's not rewrite history and pretend everyone was on the same side about it. We'd just had the failures of Adkins and Clough, fans were despondent, and the general opinion, given we'd be languishing in League One for several years, was that the board were clueless.

Oh I wasn't I know there wasn't any agreement over Wilder, and I'm not 100% sure of Slav, so there you go!

Wilder and Adkins both made sense at the time...in fact, Adkins had a pretty similar CV to Jokanovic in terms of promotions.

We normally go for the average or cheapish option....Wilder did make sense but he was still the cheaper option with hardly any experience of league 1 football.

Adkins and Jokanovic were both highly ambitious appointments...both were seen as “the best” and to bring in the best is expensive.
I remember when we appointed Adkins fans of other clubs were saying “Sheffield United have bought promotion by appointing Adkins...they’re a certainty now”
Would imagine there will be a similiar reaction in the Champiomship...I see on the Fulham forum they are gutted and now expect us to be promoted.

At least we’ll be an attractive draw for Sky tv....the pundits (without even seeing us) will all be lazily reporting how we play “good football”.
