Just got back,

Was not a classic game of football, both sides looked to be playing at half pace.

Duffy was out of sorts, but still the main attacking threat on the pitch, Fleck was steady but a bit subdued, probably mindful of the looming suspension, Lundstrum flattered to deceive as per his last few games.

Billy was bullied out of it until he won the penalty which he put away well, let’s hope he now gets back to something like the player he was in the first three months. Don never got going, and Ched.... sorry guys I don’t think it’s going to happen.

The defence was never in trouble, Stearman may turn out to be decent after all, and Moore made a very good save in injury time.

I said at half time if anyone scored that would be it and I was right. But It was probably the worst game this season for quality along with the Sheffield derby.

We did however deserve the win.

Well a win's a win....

Did someone call...?

Yes & no, T1889. Yes, you're 100% right about the three ticks; job done & onto Villa and the next round, but 'no' in respect that that level of performance was woeful from near enough our best 11. As bad as i've seen this season at home, by a long chalk. Lacking ideas, lacking leadership, lacking direction, sloppy passing, poor tempo, Sharp looking a spare part, etc. against as poor a side as i've seen. Preston appeared to be playing for the draw from kick off.

The game either offered an opportunity for basically the 1st 11 to keep up momentum & improve confidence or a the chance to put out a 2nd string and experiment. We've done neither, and although we've won, that will raise more questions than it's answered. Steve Bruce was at the match and he was perplexed as everyone else.

Near enough our best 11 with 7 changes??

We looked out of sorts today going forward.

Duffy was sloppy for most of the game and so was Lundstrum. Fleck spent most of his time tidying up after them which meant there was little creativity in the middle.

Surprised The Don, Sharp or Evans saw any of the ball as we resorted to just punting it forward for a fair amount of the match.

Good result though as I thought we had the better of the game despite how off we looked. Not sure what those Preston fans were yapping about.

So you're saying that 7 of the starting 11 today aren't 1st choice or close to 1st choice? I personally thought lafferty & heneghan were what I'd describe not being in that bracket, but each to their own. :)

Did to me at the time, and just seen it on the telebox. Definite penalty.

Yep, Ref bottled second one, which was clear cut. I guess two pens in two minutes, both in our favour, would have called his reffing into question maybe.

For me, man of the match was Baldock. Thought he was great value for money down the wing. Beat his man almost every time and fired hard, low balls along the goal line. Needed some speed of thought for someone to stick a toe out.

Moore pulled off a world beating save at close range, in the dying minutes.

We seemed a bit disjointed at times.

Heneghan was decent, not spectacular but did his job. Midfield was ok but no goal threat. Bash got forward when brought on. Ched does not have the height or timing of his jump to be a target man, better played into space for him to run in to.

Preston, very dirty, much worse than they were at their place.
UTB.

Individually yes, they are there or thereabouts but but making 7 changes is not going to produce the best team performance.

Haven't seen them back but at the time I thought the first shout was a penalty and the second not. Billy was tackled from behind. Ched fell over too easily, looking for a pen.

Who is the person who invaded the pitch?
I hope the stewards broke his neck.

he was just some toothless yokel, he just got a bit light headed by being in a big city and a real football stadium, stewards were giving him the chance to get off the pitch but he would not , so they took him down, head lock, walk of shame in front of the home crowd

Lots of positives today. We won, Sharp got a goal to end his barren spell, Evans had more time on the pitch, Heneghan did well on his debut, Lafferty had a fairly good game as did Stearman and Moore, and we beat a team who we owed from that dismal December defeat.

Job done and we are now in the fifth round. Nothing to moan about from me today. Pleased with the lads.

Pretty much sums it up. Not the greatest of matches

No ticks from me for the performance Nick, just replying to the poster. It was dire tbh, the few bits of quality came from their side and we were lucky imho

He was absolutely, completely and utterly shitfaced. Very nearly tackled himself before the world’s slowest steward caught up with him,

What exactly was quality about their performance? They didn’t give Moore a save to make until 90mins.

We were simply slightly less disjointed than them and that was enough.

Not at our best but thankfully still good enough to win id say we were the better team had plenty of chances thinking of fleck denied by that brilliant save to tip it over the bar. But struggled offensively with cutting edge but at the other end i thought the defence were brilliant henegan good debut. bar a few long range shots & that brilliant stop at the end we didnt look like conceding & chuffed to bits to be in 5th rd.

How that dreadlocked guy for Preston stayed on the pitch for 90mins i dont know. He was like cat with 9 lives

He was a strange player, wasn't he? Appeared to possess a good skill set, but appeared to a.) not want to get out of 3rd gear and b.) not have a brain between his ears. As you said SB90, he's committed at least 5 yellow card offences over the 90 minutes. The few moments he did get out of 3rd gear and engage his brain, he looked decent. He tested Moore with a decent strike late on.

I think they rough housed us a little and over crowded midfield, and we dropped to their level. We also had too much of a gap between midfield and attack, and couldn't link the two. We have a two man CM shield and that's a weakness of it. Preston also employed every single niggle and time wasting tactic they could muster from the off. When they went a goal down and started playing, they looked a lot better.

Their CF had at least one of his front teeth knocked out in the 2nd half and didn't bat an eye lid, casually put them in a cup of milk on the bench.

It was below par. Why is there only great or dire in S2?

Luck had no bearing on the game whatsoever. What do you say happened that was lucky for us?
