Last week, I had a pint with an old friend who is one of a very rare species, i.e a Wednesdayite who not only has a deep knowledge and understanding of the game of football, but also a great admiration for some of the Blades finest, his favourites being Jimmy Hagan, Joe Shaw and TC, as it should be. Let's call him Les.

At one point, the conversation got round to Jimmy and Les said " Do you remember that trick he had when, with his back to a defender, he would turn the ball between his own legs and go round him ?"

I had to admit that I didn't and asked him to show me what he meant, at which point he stood up and, at the age of 80 plus, demonstrated a perfect Cruyff turn in the middle of the pub !!

" So just like the Cruyff turn then ?" says I, to which he replied " Aye, they call it that now but Hagan was doing it 30 years before him "

In the light of this, can I suggest that when young Brooksy performs this feat for us, we on here refer to it as the Hagan turn in honour of the great man ?

Its been said before (secondhand by me) that Hagan was literally in a different class to any other player ever to play for a team in Sheffield - well at least since the modern game evolved ;)
(Ernest Needham was possibly better back then)

Even today the Grunters make up heroes who are not really theirs (waddle, walker, nilson etc) to cope with the Hagan effect.

Yep I will 2ND that Joe ! every move in football has been done before including the Hagan turn,Brooksy has the latest version ,the difference being the speed of the game today. Great players are great players from every era.

Nah, it will always be known as 'The Jack Cunt Turn'

At the kop end v Millwall Brooks allowed a hard hit ball through his legs and clipped it with his heel/ instep to run onto. He didn't quite get enough on it but what skill he is developing and long may he have the bottle to keep trying his tricks.

Was I the only miserable git in the crowd who thought it wasn't the time or the place? If he perfects the trick and is still at the Lane next season, I will eat humble pie...

What would we give for someone to come up with a video of this? (Of Hagan, not your friend Les) Unfortunately Pathe News rarely showed much open play.

In reality Brooks had a bit more to do than Cruyff, and to use his left foot to slip the ball between Hunt's legs was skill of the highest order. I think this is what's commonly known as being 'skinned alive'.

Some footage of Hagan playing for a Football League XI:

Brilliant threesome, Hagan, Shaw & Currie.
We have had some great players but not all at the same time.

Note the state of the pitch, common to play on it in those days.
Also the ball, would be leather with a blow up bladder in it, took some kicking as the balls did not travel at todays pace.
Anyone brought up to play with that type of ball will know what I mean.
Still have my old football which I used in the late 40's somewhere in my shed.

funny .. i never got on with the plastic coated Mitre balls. i just couldn't make them travel.. seeing as they were only used for 'matches' i was Pele in the practices and got picked for the team and then played crap in the game. poor technique probably :)

Jimmy Hagan and Joe Shaw played together for several seasons.

Remember it well ,how can anyone forget.
Joe Shaw the best uncapped centre half ever.
Once he was called into the England squad as a reserve, no subs then, Billy Wright got injured playing for Wolves, everyone expected Joe to be called up but alas the England manager who's escapes me at present then called up a tall player which might have been Barrass of Bolton. who was later on signed by the Blades.
We were all furious at the time and still are.

Yes and Barrass was never that good, but by the time we signed him ( Joe Mercer, Silent ?) he was fucking awful .
