Last week, I had a pint with an old friend who is one of a very rare species, i.e a Wednesdayite who not only has a deep knowledge and understanding of the game of football, but also a great admiration for some of the Blades finest, his favourites being Jimmy Hagan, Joe Shaw and TC, as it should be. Let's call him Les.
At one point, the conversation got round to Jimmy and Les said " Do you remember that trick he had when, with his back to a defender, he would turn the ball between his own legs and go round him ?"
I had to admit that I didn't and asked him to show me what he meant, at which point he stood up and, at the age of 80 plus, demonstrated a perfect Cruyff turn in the middle of the pub !!
" So just like the Cruyff turn then ?" says I, to which he replied " Aye, they call it that now but Hagan was doing it 30 years before him "
In the light of this, can I suggest that when young Brooksy performs this feat for us, we on here refer to it as the Hagan turn in honour of the great man ?
