I had the idea we got Gary Brazil from Palace or somewhere like that.

Correct. Have you been reading this?!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Brazil

He's 50 now. I vaguely remember I think when teams had only 1 sub he held the record for the most sub appearances, might be wrong, Darren might confirm!

Which goalkeeper had the longest kick? Keith Waugh - he kicked the ball right to Brazil...

There are a number of examples, but I thought Keith Quinn was the best of the brothers for quite a while.

It's not quite worked out that way, he's currently at Longford Town.

I remember that being a popular view at the time. The only time I saw him was in a fairly dull game against Chengdu at Don Valley. He hit the bar from a preposterous angle from a free kick (think Tonge's goal at Hillsborough) which is about all I recall from the game, other than a lad with dreadlocks playing (often seen at the Lane as a ball boy) who I think went to my school.

No, just remembered he wasn't one through the youth team. However,

What players were tipped to be "the next big thing" only to either flop, or never even make it for us.

I have:

Ian Ross
Ben Doane
Tyrone Thompson

P.S. I hope De Girolamo makes it into the full italian squad and has a fantastic season for us or three.

Are you counting Billy Sharp in this then?

I'd prefer him to stay under the radar - if he gets anywhere near the Italian squad McCabe will have him out the door faster than you can say "Financial Fair Play"!

I do get the impression McCabe has the squad photo on his wall with price tag stickers stuck on each player.

In my times there have been a number that were going to make it.

I remember the Smiths in my early years of watching and Brian in particular was promising but suffered that horrific broken leg against Preston when you could hear the crack from the back of the Kop.

The first youth team I saw was at the Ball Inn ground and I recall Mendonca playing with Chris Marsden.

We seemed to have a penchant for producing blond haired so called promising winger/strikers with the likes of Tony Battersby, Chris Bettany and of course John Reed whose main claim to fame seemed to be wearing the same hand bandage as Jostein Flo at the same time.

Ian Ross is biggest one that seemed to have world at his feet; I remember talking to a guy at Weds Academy and he said he would play for England as everyone knew he was that good. He got an injury and then seemed to lose his way (remember he had a family bereavement) and sort of drifted into non league.

I remember living near Abbeydale School and watching the Junior team play here on Saturday mornings around the time of Montgomery, Tonge and Jagielka. Jagielka was quite ordinary and I would have been surprised he would have made it at any level really. Tonge looked a good passer but quite frail. Montgomery was actually the best of the lot; he was all action, dribbled a lot and was a goal threat. He played on the wing mostly.

In the same team there were players like Ben Doane, Colin Cryan and also Craig McAughterie (massive centre back who was captain and everyone thought he was certain to make it). He was big and strong but as he faced quicker and more technical players and never made it (became a police officer I think). I remember Burke being up front in this side and also looked good but he too never made it. Tyrone Thompson was also promising but at least he had gone on and had a decent career in lower leagues/non league.

Bit later on the two young lads Mark Ward and Thompson (went to Burton?) were in the England junior sides but neither really made it drifting into non leagues.

In later years I recall similar stories to McAughterie in big lads like the two Robertson's, Chris and Jordan and at least those two have floated around the lower leagues.

I recall Adam Chapman standing out as the best player a few years ago alongside Kyle Walker but where as Walker has gone on to great things, Chapman also got in trouble with the law like Jordan Robertson and is now at Newport.

Some of the good young players we had have gone onto be success elsewhere.

Marsden, Kevin Davies are two that stand out although Davies I think was released quite early. Marsden at least played a few first team games.

Ironically Billy Sharp and Mendonca scored a ton at Junior level but never really made it here (in two spells) but have done very well elsewhere.

Remember seeing Paul Heald too when he was a young keeper up at the Ball Inn ground. Remember watching a few games there and then rolling down the hill to the Lane for the 3pm league games.

Actually may be going up the Academy on Saturday (playing Leeds I believe?) so if I do will report on the next crop; although aware most on here know a lot more than me so may be number 5 played well and the like!!!

Wow that's a seriously long way!:)

But I could kick 5000 miles
And I would kick 5000 more
Just to be the keeper who could kick
the ball to a far distant shore

I was at that game and indeed like you, stood on the Kop during one of my forays up to Sheffuld way back then (1989-90 wonnit?) It was a pretty ordinary game marred by that incident (just away to the left a bit in our half as you faced down to BL) and the game was stopped ages. Remember tuning into Radio Swill afterwards and hearing of a 'pretty much, career-ending injury to Sheffield United player Brian Smith' who up to that moment, had been having a good game.

Poor sod.

It was in the 3-1 win against Preston North End in April 1989

Back to our productive youth period of the 60's...... those who didn't make it... Jack Parks, scored a hatful in the Northern Intermediate, I thought he was the bees knees when I was a young lad, impressed by scoring stats at youth level. Jack managed about 1 appearance and drifted off to Halifax I think?
Phil Cliff was another who flickered briefly (West Ham away in FA Cup 5 Round) but never could lace Punton's boots;)
Mick Ash similar to Cliff, looked good at youth and reserve level but couldn't cut it in 1st team.
Mick Harmston, as above, went off to Southend for a short spell, still see him occasionally around Sheffield.

I was at the game as well and, apart from Smith's horrific leg break, it was pretty much ordinary until we suddenly exploded getting 3 goals in a few minutes about 15 mins from the end. Agana got the first I think, then Deane and straight from Preston's kick off we got the ball back, went down the other end and Duffield scored.

3-0 up and coasting until, Stan scored a contender for "own goal of the decade" with a spectacular diving header at the BL end and them in the last minute, Preston hit the bar with a free kick.

I saw Cammack score a last minute (I think) equaliser for us in a 1-1 draw with Leeds.

He was always a hero of mine after that.
indeed .. my favourite ever game.. last minute.. it was about the 5th minute of extra time.. the firework display had already gone off.. classic match

My favourite match ever was Blades 3-0 Leeds in 1971. Flynn Deardon and Colqohoun. My first game, closely followed by Leeds 0-4 Blades then every other win over the dirty bell end road bar stewards

Oh, and can we stop calling him Diego.

We don't call Porter, Chris. Or Doyle, Michael.

Now that we know that it bugs you, I will keep calling him Diego, in fact, in light of his superstardom, I will call him Señor Diego... just because he isn't Spanish :)
