Lee Morris

Lee Morris is always Exhibit A against those who argue that United always get shafted in transfer dealings.

£2M+ from Derby in 1999 (when £2M was a lot more money comparatively speaking) wasn't it?

The rule is that United always get shafted in big money transfer dealings unless Derby County are the other party: they have been quite generous to us over the years, selling Jimmy Hagan to us most notably.

I was at the game as well and, apart from Smith's horrific leg break, it was pretty much ordinary until we suddenly exploded getting 3 goals in a few minutes about 15 mins from the end. Agana got the first I think, then Deane and straight from Preston's kick off we got the ball back, went down the other end and Duffield scored.

3-0 up and coasting until, Stan scored a contender for "own goal of the decade" with a spectacular diving header at the BL end and them in the last minute, Preston hit the bar with a free kick.

Preston defended very well and kept us out until one of their centre halves misplayed a backpass with about 10 minutes left and put Agana in.

Duffield's goal was scored 9 seconds after Preston kicked off.

That Stancliffe own goal was a thing of beauty.

I think Stan's OG was beaten by Andy Barnsley in the first minute of the game v Bradford at the Lane on 28/3/87. Bradford attacked the Kop end down the right wing and put in a cross and Barnsley rose like thr proverbial salmon to plant a textbook centre foward's header in the top right corner whilst Burridge just stood there aghast.

Apparently Jeff King's own goal at Reading on 23/2/83 was even better but I didn't see that.

I remember the Barnsley goal: they were 2-0 up after 10 minutes but we managed to pull it back to 2-2 by the end. Stan really had to stretch for his though!

I have always assumed from what I have heard and read that the Jeff King goal is the greatest own goal ever scored by a United player in living memory.

Also Exhibit A against those who argue that we should keep every player with potential because in 12 months time they'll be worth millions more.

Whilst Exhibit A for those who insist our transfer dealings are "good business" is our League Position.

I think Gayle scoring the championship winning goal for Leeds against a stricken Mel Rees goes down as my least favourite own goal of all time (not that I've particularly "enjoyed" any of them).

You could also put
wayne quinn (newcastle 3m),
paul devlin (birmingham 1m?) &
curtis woodhouse (birmingham 1m again i think?)
in there.

All did very well with us, not so well anywhere else.

It's going back a bit but didnt we have a next-big-thing called Ian Benjamin?

Sold to West Brom for a small fee I seem to recall. - no doubt dazzler will put me right and include the lad's inside leg measurements and the date he last had his whooping cough vaccination.

The motto being,
"if it's decent youf, give it the hoof but if it's old and shite - keep it tight"

As you took my name in vain...

Benjamin was a youth player who made his debut as sub in the 0-4 defeat at Cardiff on 21/4/79. He then played a full game in the final game of the season at home to Leicester when we needed to win 9-0 or have an improbable set of results to avoid relegation. Benjamin scored 2 pens in a 2-2 draw.

He was then a regular at the start of 79-8o- missing a pen v Doncaster in the League Cup and scoring one in the first league game v Swindon. After the third league game, we flogged him for £100,00o to WBA. That was certainly not peanuts and was a huge fee in 1979 terms for a chap with onlt 5 league apperances.

WBA were one of the best teams in the country at the time, finishing third in 78-79 and being serious championship challengers under Big Ron. As it happens, Benjamin never played a game for then and soon found himself drifting round the lower divisions.

See, another transfer where United got the best of the deal :-)

Tsk, tsk - not very impressive. Where is the info about his Whooping Cough inoculation. not bothered about his inside leg to be honest.

The Preston CB who misplaced the backpass for the first goal was ex-Blade Bob Atkin and it was Deane (not Agana) that scored the goal. Agana scored our 2nd after a poor goalkick by ex-Miller, Roy Tunks

Quite right, it was Agana's first goal since Feb and first league goal since Jan, so he was mightily relieved. I remember it was a one on one after, as you say, the keeper sent a goal kick directly to him and he scuffed the shot and was lucky to see it go in.
