Following on from the Diego De Girolamo discussions in another thread.

What players were tipped to be "the next big thing" only to either flop, or never even make it for us.

I have:

Ian Ross
Ben Doane
Tyrone Thompson

P.S. I hope De Girolamo makes it into the full italian squad and has a fantastic season for us or three.

Oh, and can we stop calling him Diego.

We don't call Porter, Chris. Or Doyle, Michael.

Not so much “hailed as the next best thing” but this lot came through the ranks, played for our first team (or possibly were only subs) and then seemingly disappeared without trace:-

Trenton Wiggan
Paul Casey
Tony Moore
Tony Battersby
Graham Anthony
Ben Doane
Adam Burley
Colin Cryan
Tyrone Thompson
Lewis Killeen
Ian Ross
Colin Marrison

Some of them played quite a few games (Brazil and Wiggan) and Tony Moore played enough to rank as the worst right back we've ever had (unless he has any offspring who use this site in which case he was a top player but a bit unlucky to be behind Len Badger).

Yes, I've just been googling a few of them to see "what happened next".
Brazil actually had a long, successful career with Preston and Fulham which I'd kind of forgotten about, so I ninja-edited him off the list and added Colin Cryan ;-)
Graham Anthony played a lot of games for Carlisle and most of the others dropped into non-league.
Some of them don't appear to have a Wikipedia page which I'm presuming means they weren't a massive success.

Yeah, Tony Battersby was the one I was going to mention. Scored tonnes of goals for the kids and I think on loan but never broke into the team really. He might have turned out in the Anglo Italian Cup and the like, though.

Tyrone Thompson I remember having a stormer in the cup against Ispwich but it never really happened for him after that.

Tony Battersby is what the papers like to call "much travelled"...

Ha! What were they signing him for, extra bodies for training drills?

Chris Bettany - I was convinced with his lightning pace after seeing him in a friendly at Shepshed Dynamo that we was going to make it...

There are a number of examples, but I thought Keith Quinn was the best of the brothers for quite a while.

It's not quite worked out that way, he's currently at Longford Town.

I remember we had a striker called Paul Burke who played for the youth team. I think i was about 11 at the time (so around 1997) and I was convinced he'd make it because he scored a few for the juniors but I think he ended up at Sheffield FC.

Already had a mention, but Graham Anthony was a lovely footballer at reserve team level. Calm in possession, accurate in the pass. The antithesis of Bassett's archetypal central midfielder.

Never got anywhere near a successful first team career....

I think Ben Doane should be added to the list of those who's career was ended by injury after a certain Monday night visit to Selhurst....

He lives near a mate of mine now. Apparently he's lovely bloke, and amazing in kickabouts when his leg holds up. :)

Jacob Mellis?
Jordan Robertson
Ashley Sestanovic - is he out of prison yet?
