Top 5.

1. Harris. All been said above, best team we've put together in 50 years.
2. Bassett. Rescued a desperate situation and acheived way above anyones expectations.
3. Porterfield. From Div 4 to sixth in Div 2, nuff said.
4. Kendall (season 1). What a transformation, would have been promoted if he'd been appointed a month sooner.
5. Warnock. Got more time than any other manager in our history but eventually got us promoted.

Footballs changed so much
when Harris was manager Woodward went in goal as there were no subs , kids today wouldnt understand this premise.
They are used to a mini team in recaro seats, that are like interchangeable parts, offside was black and white , not in phases, you could pass to a keeper.
Players got diddly squat , star players drove hillman imps with flock wall paper on them
I remember walking downHerries Road to a Sheffield derby and walking past one of the owls players walking to the ground with his boots
having a pee at hartlepool at half time and our striker Bob Hatton coming in in full kit to have a piss so poor were the facilities
its chalk and cheese and incomparable

when first started going we had a great team just missin europe woodward currie salmons [saw him scorin straight from a corner] so gettin me hooked would have been mr harris, for bringing sabella and getting to touch the great man at the lane harry for that although gettin relegated at cambridge was'nt great, thought porterfield was underated and thought he did a good job,and although we were almost relegated when bassett took over the following years were rollercoasters we could only dream of we even got a tv show out of it,so cheatin a bit BB it would have to be bassett harris and porterfield for me scoring against weeds is always a plus, now hands up for the worst 1's [have we enough space] peter's robson, squirrell ,adams, blackwell for not going after gettin beatin in final any others.Beeffy dublin 10 blade.

Surly it must be John Nicholson?

3 FA cup wins, 32 years in charge and managed 1216 games

I can remember jags going in goal because they're we're no subs v arsenal

If harris would of had the backing of a board, we would of kept Tudor, Jones and Birchanl (not sure of spelling)
long time ago, which he begged his board to do, (story of our clubs life) he would of made it a great club IMHO.

Spot on mate - the best manager/team/ playing style ever seen at the Lane. Football played on the deck, a pleasure to watch.

Agreed. And for the most part we played good football on absolutely diabolical pitches. Not the (comparative) bowling greens that are played on now.

Also, and I think in large part because of the way we played, most of us were generally quite optimistic about the club at that time. I felt confident Sheffield United could and would beat anyone they came up against at Bramall Lane, and stood a fighting chance against most teams away away from home. The very idea of sinking as low as the third division, let alone the fourth never ever entered anyone's mind. When relegated to the second tier of English football, most of us thought we'd be promoted back up to the first pretty soon.

...and when we hit the fourth?

Not many expected us to get back to the first within a million years!

Although I will always regard our relegation to the fourth division as a humiliating stain on the club's history, the season there (especially away games) was eventually quite enjoyable.

However, as far as I'm concerned the way I viewed us completely altered around that time. I hoped, rather than expected to win. I (along with many others) worried that we might lose matches against teams we never thought we'd ever be playing league matches against! And after the first five games of that season, comprising of a home draw against Hereford, an away win at Wigan, home win against Colchester, then defeats at Hull and Stockport, we weren't looking hugely impressive. The first game of the season against Hereford I remember as a paricularly depressing experience. 2-0 up after a few minutes, then finally struggling to hold on to 2-2. And yet just a few seasons earlier we almost snatched a european place and were only 4 points off winning the league!

Not actually a manager even though he took charge so not allowed. ha ha

john Nicholson was club secretary for Sheffield United for over 30 years. During this period the club did not employ a 'manager' but Nicholson undertook many of the duties currently associated with a modern day football manager.

what basset did at this club is only matched by what he did at wimbledon ,the football might not have been the best but i would say they were the most exciting and enjoyable blades supporting days of my life closely followed by warnocks years

its such a shame that some chose to stubbornly refuse to enjoy either era and i hope they are happier now watching us swiftly be returned to where we were when both came in and turned things round ,fucking nowhere

Warnock for me, im too young too fully appreciate Bassett. glad someone else had stuck up for old Colin though.

he took us to the big time and we're a long, long way from that now.
