What a difference the Manager makes at a club

Yes, it does make a difference who the manager is, but let's not pretend there is any great science to this, because the success of any manager at a particular club does not always translate to success with a similar method at another club.

This club has to change its structure and it can't rely on the current management team forever, certainly not if we (somehow) get promoted again in the near future. I have no wish, nor the masochistic inclination, to return to the punishment beatings of the previous two PL seasons.

One of the issues I have is that on both occasions we've attempted a change of approach it's been declared a failure without giving it time to actually fail. That was certainly the case this season. Performances were absolutely rotten but the 'project' was abandoned far too quickly in such a panic that there simply had to be more to it.

As it turns out Selles is now being hailed as a bloody saviour at Zaragoza. So that probably worked out for the best for everyone, but we'll never know because it wasn't allowed the space to flourish or die. Maybe it's about the culture here, including in the stands.

For managers it's mostly about right-time-right-place.

Not sure about being hailed a savour. They won 3 on the trot, but in last four they've been knocked out of the cup and picked up 2 points. He lost his first 5 games, his overall record in the league is P17 W4 D2 L11. He has taken then off the bottom by 1 place but they're 5 points from safety - 5 points behind Real Sociedad (B side Under 21s).

Leicester are not playing for the manager and only started putting effort in at 2-0 down. Cifuentes will be gone very soon. I am so glad they didn't take Wilder after interviewing him for the job.

We could have ended up in League one with Wednesday without Wilder. Now there is no chance and we are looking up. Wilder looking like the best manager in United's history. Promotion to the premier league would confirm that.
Wilder is our best ever manager…..long may it continue

I think the summer proved that our club isn’t ready for a ‘head coach’ it needs a manager who oversees everything including recruitment.

That may well be the case. And the club will never progress for as long as that is the case. And, for those who have evolved past stone age era football setups, who the head coach actually is matters much, much less than anyone on here would think

ever other club has evolved to the HC/DoF model,

Though not every club adopting this new model is in the top 6 of the PL.

We might appoint Selles as DOF...

It's like the 'we need to use AI' to be progressive nonsense.
Or the 'play 10 passes around the back' before attacking 'progressive model'.

Barnsley has (had) a DOF do we aspire to be like them ?

He was rebuilding a side that stunk out the premier league.

Look at Southampton and Leicester this season to put into context what a good job he did getting 90+ points

Though Wilder started with a squad in need of a complete rebuild last season and little finance from PA who was more interested in selling the club.

"He lost his first 5 games" sounds familiar!

I'm going on the basis of the Zaragoza forum, where he is actually being feted for turning around the desperate situation left by the previous manager and getting performances out of what they consider to be a poor squad.

Wilder took a fair bit of stick for the agricultural way we approached games last season. We were very streetwise in the main and found a way to stack up the points even when we were up against it.

The current approach Wilder has is more aligned with those prime Wilder years we all loved. Were definitely lacking a few characters on the pitch but the stats prove that we are one of the more entertaining teams in the division…
