Team vs Villa

1. Why does everyone think Leonard is a attacking Midfielder 2. Duffy is MOTM practically every game he is our only source of creativity at the moment, how the fuck has he been out of form?

My reasoning is; 3 tough games in a week - stronger squad - rotate. Bring him on 2nd half if we need him.

Only 3 of those outfield players started yesterday.
I think Clarke and Wilson will be the first choice home pairing, and I can see why.
I wouldn't start Duffy after he played 90 minutes yesterday, and he's not been on top form recently.
I wouldn't want to chuck Holmes in for his debut in the 10 position in a game like this.
That midfield did well at Norwich. It's solid but with enough quality on the ball. Playing Leonard there will help Baldock out, who played 90 minutes yesterday and will probably be up against Adomah, who's rapid. And without approaching it defensively, it's important we don't lose this game.

Yep - like the look of that with just one question mark.
? - Stevens. Last few games I've seen him, been disappointed & he seems off the boil. Lafferty in?

Duffy on for the last 30 mins (as a few have said) to create our 3rd goal to settle the game.

It will be the same that played against Norwich and I wouldn't be surprised if we take a more conservative approach to more games from here.

I know Wilder loves to attack every game, but I think we've also realised with the way we play we can get hit quite badly on the counter attack so we need to take every game as it comes. Villa has some very quick players.

The best thing about this this thread is how difficult it is to pick the favourite line up, there seems to be a few exciting alternatives to start and from the bench, some good footballers to choose from, exciting prospect, looking forward to iti

Agree with that Boxer Blade , I think that we're witnessing the squad development that Wilder had in mind from the moment he took control, so two for every position (possibly with the exception of keeper), and we're gradually getting there. Apart from an ageing forward line, we seem well equipped in all other areas of the pitch. No doubt Chris will address this during the summer, but given that forwards are always the costliest part of the equation it should be interesting to see just how far the board will go to support our manager.

I'd agree with you on this Ricky its important we keep competition up for places and I don't think Duffy is the first name on the team sheet like many others do he's been a very good player for us but still very much hot and cold. He didn't do it at Villa away albeit off the back of his house getting burgled won't of helped. I would consider Donaldson starting up top as i don't think (yet) Wilson has showed real pace and I think he will be a sharp style striker with a little more to his game. The mental effect as a defender when you line up against someone who tore you a new one can't be underestimated, just as it can't be how much of a positive effect it can have if they're not playing.

I wouldn't say out of form, but things just haven't quite come off for him in the last few games. Not exactly his fault and he always shows regardless which is good to see.

For me, the same team at Norwich deserves a start. We looked excellent at times and none of them should lose their shirt. It's a great problem to have when even picking the bench isn't easy...

Leonard's a box-to-box midfielder. He's actually a bit different to what we have at the moment, hence him being played in a more conservative midfield. In the game against Norwich, with no Duffy, Fleck was excellent. Most of the creativity came through him.

I agree I think Fleck looks better further forward making those strong runs direct at the defence, when Duffy plays he seems to do that less as Duff fills that more forward role and I don't think he has any confidence in Lundstrom in the holding role, playing Leonard and Evans frees up Fleck to do some damage further up the field.
Also I think Grealish would find a Fleck Leonard and Evans midfield a much harder prospect to deal with than the trio we had out at Vanilla Park.

? - Stevens. Last few games I've seen him, been disappointed & he seems off the boil. Lafferty in?

I think the most disappointing thing from Saturday was Lafferty NOT making a case for his inclusion over Edna.
Don't think he's been "on it" for a few weeks but didn't see Lafferty do nearly enough to actually oust him from the first XI.

How refreshing is it to even consider dropping some of the regulars because we think their might be a better option available? Wasn't long ago we couldn't even fill the bench with enough to make a difference in the 90 minutes (even when Hammond was out there grazing unseen).

But equally Donaldson might having come on to replace Wilson and scoring the second.

Ricky's gone for the same team and bench as the Norwich game, can't argue with that.
Agreed, that’s why I put the last bit in my initial post regards Donaldson.

I'd drop Stevens but he's ex Villa so I think he'll start. Having Leonard around will help Duffy no end. Lens athleticism and ability to cover ground gives Duffy another non wb outlet when attacking and hopefully a bit more leeway to focus on creating rather than tracking back

Current form? He's played 25mins since an operation.....
Lavery made the bench the other week!

I was also comparing current form of other strikers, Clarke, Wilson, Donaldson, Sharp are all ahead of him, don’t near more than four in the Match day squad.

Lol whatever happenedto Baxter?!

He's been training with Everton ever since returning from the drugs ban last year. Playing for the u23's a bit. Nice gesture from Bill Kenwright, who apparently reached out after reading an interview in The Times with him. If he has his head screwed on, could make for a decent L1 player. Team will have to take a punt on him though. Tested positive for ecstasy AND coke while with us...

I think it'll probably be that team, bar Donaldson for Wilson.

I don't know if it's been mentioned elsewhere but I thought the selection of the first teamers v Preston was good management from Wilder. All of them that started haven't particularly had a full season, so should be relatively fresh for Tuesday v Villa. Moore out injured at the start of the season, then couldn't get his place back; Baldock didn't start the season until Freeman got injured, then was out himself through injury for a few weeks; Stearman got injured couldn't get his place back; Donaldson got injured, couldn't get his place back; and Fleck had about 3 weeks off in December due to suspension. I'd call that very canny from CW.

I reckon our loan agreement with Man Utd could have some kind of clause in it that Wilson needs to make X amount of appearances

It was published that Liverpool have these agreement due to them getting annoyed that there players weren’t playing.

Could be in there, but to be fair last time he started he scored so should keep his place.
