Pretty much a guarantee from Wilder in his post-match interview that we’ll see mass changes and starts for those that haven’t played much of late.

I would go with:

Blackman
CCV Heneghan Wright
Thomas Slater Carruthers Lafferty Norrington-Davies
Smith
Sharp Lavery

Other options are giving Hanson a run-out rather than say Sharp. I imagine Evans will be on the bench, and should get a good half hour.

I realise Thomas isn’t ideal at RWB, but can’t think of alternatives if we want to maintain the shape. Any U23 watchers have any suggestions?

I'm old enough still to be a big fan of the FA Cup, and usually I'd be pissed off with turning out a second string. But we've not had the squad to rotate properly over Christmas, Bolton showed what can happen when we do, we need to do what we can to stay top 6 or higher, and then there's the game on the 12th.

So, for the second year running, I'm gonna hold my nose and say, "I agree. Bollox the Cup !"

wonder if it might include a new young striker signing thats doing nowt at minute..........just thinking outloud...

Ched and Lavery up top for me.
Why even bother with Carruthers? Why do we need to watch him pass the ball out of play or lose possesion in cup football too?
Hopefully people might buy him in January based on his old reputation, playing him in the cup will have the adverse affect to "putting him in the shop window".

Maybe Wilder will make it clear before any supporters buy tickets/transport that the team he'll choose will be...

(without naming any individuals)

It's a long trip, financially and timewise, we don't want supporters thinking they've been duped.

Personally, I don't think he will... purely to keep McCarthy on his toes.

If not Carruthers then who though, assuming we want to rest the first XI? We really don’t have many centre midfielders to choose from, hence why Basham has had to deputise there.

I doubt Evans will be started having played zero games since his op. An extended sub appearance perhaps.

We might have some new players by then. Well you never know anyway!

4-4-2? Slater and anyone except Duffy!? I reckon Brooks will be back too.
It's hard though because I don't think I've ever cared less about a cup in my life!

Hard to get geared up for this one as a fan but a welcome opportunity for some of our fringe/second string players to show what they can do.

Love for Lavery to get a game as I think he offers us something a bit different. Hopefully an appearance from Evans too.

Expecting to see Slater, Lafferty, Wright, Heneghan and Blackman feature. Will Brooks be back, perhaps? He needs to get back fit for a bit of nutmegging the week after :D

play to win but with a much changed side. we won't drop all of the first 11. But with an eye on the pigs, it would be good to give fringe players a run out

I don't see why he should, you either can/ want to go to the game or you don't, it shouldn't matter which players he picks

He’s already said tonight that he’ll ring the changes so I don’t think anyone can complain. He’ll still want to win the game of course, but it’s not worth getting any unnecessary injuries or suspensions with the filth being just around the corner

I'd go:

GK: Eastwood

RCB: CCV
CCB: Wright
LCB: Heneghan

RWB: Thomas
LWB: Lafferty

CM: Slater
CM: *new signing / another youngster
ACM: Carruthers

CF: Donaldson / Hanson
CF: Lavery

I've got a feeling Sharp will start against the pigs so we can give Clayton another run out if Hanson is being sold as expected.

It would be nice if Brooks if recovered enough to play 45 mins so we can have him on the bench v pigs. I don't think Ched or Freeman are ready yet.

Don't play anyone who may start against the pigs. That match is our absolute priority and Wilder understands this. Players who have played virtually every game - particularly over the busy Christmas & New Year period - need a rest. Basham, Lundstrum, O'Connell & Clarke particularly.

Rest everybody and play 4-4-2.

Blackman

CCV Heneghan Wright Lafferty

Carruthers Slater Lundstram Thomas

Sharp Lavery

New midfielder in for Lundstram ideally, sub him off after 60 minutes if not.

I'd go with that

Select no one who we intend to start the game the following Friday.

Simples.

I think Slater will get a start and dare I say Ty Smith a place on the bench. Lafferty will play in front of Norrington-Davis who could be on the bench. Harvey Gilmore has also been excellent this season so maybe a sniff of being on the bench.

The other two would be Sam Graham who I don’t feel is technically quite there yet and Callum Semple but he won’t be back after a year out until Late January.

Jake Bennet out for up to a year who I think could have featured.

The only other doubt I haVe is whether players going out on loan, Thomas, Hanson and Henigan would be allowed to get cup tied.....

Give Carruthers a full 90 minutes, I dont think he is as bad as some are saying, I accept his recent run of coming on as sub have been, well crap, but we all saw a player in him earlier in the season, give him the full game at ipswich to see if it can give him some confidence, who knows?

Agree scratch team but everyone is assuming we will have CCV and Blackman available. They may be recalled if we don't agree an extension next week. EEL went back for a few weeks last January. Even then we would need their clubs permission to play in the FA Cup so don't expect them to be around.

Right back is the obvious weakness whether we play a back four or five, at best you end up with Carter-Vickers out of position or potentially a left footer or Carruthers at wing-back. That might mean Basham plays anyway.

Hopefully we don't go with a complete second string team, I hate it when we don't even try in cups, last season against Bolton was pathetic, Lavery and Clarke didn't even attempt to play their way into first team contention, where you would hope anyone that plays would at least try to impress.

I think we’ll see Ched/Lafferty/Slater/Brooks/Wright all start for definite Brooks just to get some game time so he’s fit enough for the bench Friday night.....good call from Larky about Ty Smith and Harvey Gilmour well worth a place on the bench, Sam Graham not quite ready technically needs at least another 18 months to develop further.

We don’t need to agree an extension – they are season-long loan deals, with clauses for recall that can be activated at any point of the window. I’d be extremely surprised if they weren’t given permission to play on Saturday.

Blackman
CCV Wright Heneghan
Thomas Basham Slater Carruthers Lafferty
Brooks (if available) Lavery

Desperate for some strength in depth aren't we?

Plus I wouldn't be surprised to see the likes of Thomas, Heneghan and Slater loaned out this week.

this only time ill say this. because i love the fa cup, & normally id want utd to stay for as long as possible as ive some of my fav games have been in fa cup last 20 yrs.

but for me anyone who is playing in derby or could come of the bench. should stay at home & we have a youthful team v ipswich similar to jpt game v hartlepool . because its effectively a dead rubber before a cup final

- Assuming Freeman/Evans not fit.... I'd go for:

- - - - - - - - -- - - - -- Blackman
Basham - CCV - - - - -Wright - - -Heneghan - - -Lafferty
- - - - -- -- - - - Lundstram - - - - Fleck
- - - -- - - - - -- - - -- - Carruthers
- - - -- - - - - - Sharp - - -- - Lavery

Subs: Eastwood,Youth Defenders x2, Slater, Thomas, Hanson, Youth attacker

I think it'd be worth giving Lunds and Fleck another hour or so game time together to continue to get used to each other's game etc... Basham is the sort of player who can keep going and going.. last chance saloon for Carruthers!

Like others have said, normally I'd be in favour of playing strongest possible side in the Cup - but this year I think it's worth making an exception..

UTB

CW has already said that he would make lotsof changes at the weekend. I think it is right that he should let fan's know.
I wanted to see our main team put out against Bolton in the cup last season. Was a little pissed off he did not let the fans know. I think he's took that on board and hence he tells us tonight.
Now you can make an informed choice. If you are a fan of a fringe player you may now think he gas more of a chance of playing.
Yes we're all fans of our team and you may suggest that if you are a bit more obsessed then you follow everywhere. Some may stretch their budget to go expecting us to put out our near best team. I love the cup but on this occasion, now he has informed everyone of his intention, I accept his reasoning.
