You get money for getting into the next round of the cup. So I am not entirely sure why Ashley would be opposed to that.

I think you’re not thinking like a mega rich person with the first point mate. It’s about image and reflected glory. They’re not bothered really about losing a few million here and there if they can bask in the glory of a Super Bowl trophy or World Series or indeed premier league or European cup trophy.

I think a lot of them get into football overestimating the 'soft' benefits (improved image/reflected glory/new business opportunities) and underestimate the financial burden.

People who've spent a life time seeing rich rewards on their investments can't get their head around the fact you can spend £50 million and not even leave the Championship.

Yes, agreed, they're mad to get involved. But it still comes back to the fact that if you aren't emotionally tied, your only really long term motive is profit. On those grounds, Mike Ashley is no different to the Prince, he's just got shit loads more wedge.

That said, I'm not keen on him taking over, but I can't really explain to myself why.

Mike Ashley is no mug. He's been in football for a while now. He knows that he would have to invest heavily and make us successful in order to make us a saleable assett - for a profitable return for his investment.

He would spend at the outset, get us into the Prem and then sell when the time is right. We are a stepping stone for any investor - like 99% of all football clubs.

The above link is a good indication of what Ashley's motives might be.

I suppose with Ashley we'd skip the initial charm offensive and momentary delusions that the sky is the limit. We'd just hope that his interests aligned with the club's and what he is willing to extract from the club (land, naming rights, increased matchday prices and a more 'Ryanair' approach to supporter relations) we don't mind losing if it means some level of improvement on the pitch short term.

I don’t think they are deluded.
They are a single team city with a huge catchment area and a large ground.
If that were us we would realistically expect to be in the top half of the Premiership

From my experience they expect more than just a top half finish. There not in the top category of big (not using the m word) with your Manchester uniteds or Liverpool's and they don't have the attraction London clubs get. They are as you say about middle but in football you can obviously finish above and below that expectation which they have.

Completely true but that’s not their mindset though - imagine being the first owner to bring a trophy to Sheffield United after so long I’d be a legend for ever - that’s the way they think
