Takeover

You get money for getting into the next round of the cup. So I am not entirely sure why Ashley would be opposed to that.
Maybe the managers disrespecting it and playing weakened sides? We all know the league takes precedent. I can't be arsed to look at who they played in those fixtures mind

A plan would be a start, please don’t tell me that Mike Ashley has anything better than a desire to sell at a profit.
If you take over a football club you don’t support, other than profit, what are your motives?

Profit certainly was the prince’s only motive, as he set out immediately on arrival.

Point 1. Totally agree

Point 2. Which is why I didn’t trust him then, and don’t trust him now

I think you’re not thinking like a mega rich person with the first point mate. It’s about image and reflected glory. They’re not bothered really about losing a few million here and there if they can bask in the glory of a Super Bowl trophy or World Series or indeed premier league or European cup trophy.

It’s hard to believe that Sheffield United fans would like an Ashley takeover, given the fact that his only real qualification is his immense wealth.

Our fans spend most of their time moaning about perceived faults with our club, but be careful what you wish for.
Come on in Mike 😀

I think a lot of them get into football overestimating the 'soft' benefits (improved image/reflected glory/new business opportunities) and underestimate the financial burden.

People who've spent a life time seeing rich rewards on their investments can't get their head around the fact you can spend £50 million and not even leave the Championship.

Yes, agreed, they're mad to get involved. But it still comes back to the fact that if you aren't emotionally tied, your only really long term motive is profit. On those grounds, Mike Ashley is no different to the Prince, he's just got shit loads more wedge.

That said, I'm not keen on him taking over, but I can't really explain to myself why. :)

You can, just not in the desired direction.........glances towards S6.

Mike Ashley is no mug. He's been in football for a while now. He knows that he would have to invest heavily and make us successful in order to make us a saleable assett - for a profitable return for his investment.

He would spend at the outset, get us into the Prem and then sell when the time is right. We are a stepping stone for any investor - like 99% of all football clubs.

I'm prepared to give it a go Mikey love.

You get a lot more money for staying in the Premier League. That was the main KPI for Newcastle under Ashley.

The above link is a good indication of what Ashley's motives might be.

I suppose with Ashley we'd skip the initial charm offensive and momentary delusions that the sky is the limit. We'd just hope that his interests aligned with the club's and what he is willing to extract from the club (land, naming rights, increased matchday prices and a more 'Ryanair' approach to supporter relations) we don't mind losing if it means some level of improvement on the pitch short term.

It appears I owe you an apology bongleblade . Whether this ends up coming off or not, you were well ahead of the curve on this one. Some classic ITK'ing from you. They don't make them like this anymore
appreciate that Bladesmanluke, though if i am being completely honest i don't know whether all these press rumours have come from this thread, or there is some real weight behind them. Now that Yorkshire Live are in the picture it does give a bit more substance to what i have heard. Let's see how this plays out.

I don’t think they are deluded.
They are a single team city with a huge catchment area and a large ground.
If that were us we would realistically expect to be in the top half of the Premiership
From my experience they expect more than just a top half finish. There not in the top category of big (not using the m word) with your Manchester uniteds or Liverpool's and they don't have the attraction London clubs get. They are as you say about middle but in football you can obviously finish above and below that expectation which they have.

Following that through, what glory have our current and previous owners basked in?

The point being, that there’s no glory, profit, kudos in owning a loss miking run of the mill championship club.

The vast majority of prospective owners wil hope for much better than our current status, otherwise why bother.

The reality that most of them fail in their objectives and must be mad to get involved is another story. It takes a special kind of effort to make us significantly worse than we are today, so the upside / downside risk is favourable, whoever takes over.

Completely true but that’s not their mindset though - imagine being the first owner to bring a trophy to Sheffield United after so long I’d be a legend for ever - that’s the way they think

How would this leave the "United World" setup? Would we leave this setup by the prince?
Not sure how interconnected it is I guess, probably just the shared ownership.
We should be really childish and not them use the 'United' then it would just be called 'World'.

Ah no, there is a missed opportunity to drop in a silly name to see if it sticks.

NEWS JUST IN: Scott Chegg in to buy Sheffield United

Hats off for the rumour that may now have credence bongle.

Did you hear who this American is?
Wonder what his motives are for picking a random club to buy in a city he’s probably never heard of, playing in a league he doesn’t know anything about?

If this going to happen I hope he’s well minted. After the skintest Saudi Prince there’s ever been, it’ll probably be our luck that we’ve got a new owner from Texas, who owns an oil field that’s just dried up
