I saw Spurs play us a few times, the first being in 1961. Spurs were the best team in the land bar none. They played us in a mid-week game and I was surrounded by a number of Wednesday players who were challenging Spurs for the league' top spot, strangely they cheered when United scored and we cheered when Spurs scored to wind them up.

I think that was when they did the league and FA Cup double, a great team full of REAL stars.

We played Spurs at the Lane on Monday 4th Sept 61 and drew 1-1. As it was only the 6th game of the season, I don't think anyone was challenging for the top spot :-)

Saw the 1962 game at the Lane, ended 3-3 (may have been the same score at WHL?)

The incomparable John White sold a dummy and the whole Kop fell over.......

We won 3-1 in 1962 (22/9/62 - Hodgson, Allchurch, Ketteborough). The 3-3 was on 5/10/63 (Docherty, Simpson, T. Wagstaff). We drew 3-3 at WHL on 9/4/62 (Hodgson 2, Simpson)

I'm glad someone's got a memory, these days I can't remember what I had for lunch..

I seem to remember that Wednesday were at the top with Spurs at that time which is why the Wednesday players were there. It might have been quite early in the season, granted.

Loads of memories of Spurs games,...TC's debut 3-2 game at the Lane sticks in my mind..Jimmy Greaves played and scored for Spurs...He scored in the previous game at the Lane again the season before. The 6-0 game was another memorable game..not so good, getting done 5 at WHL..think a young Glenn Hoddle was in Spurs line up and Ralph Coates with the Bobby Charlton rap over haircut and Steve Perryman...remember a 2-2 around '74 and it was kicking off all over after the game...also a 2-2 after being 2 down..Gazza stayed on the bench that day, must have been early 90's...can't remember who scored.

That was a good match. After a goalless 1st half, John Duncan and Peter Taylor put Spurs 2 up before Keith Edwards and Gary Hamson levelled matters.

My first Blades v Spurs match was a 2-2 draw too but in Sept 1971 (attendance was over 40,000 as Blades were top of the league that time). Billy Dearden gave us the lead after a mix-up between Mike England and Pat Jennings. Martin Peters equalised in injury time of the 1st half (ref blew for half time immediately after), Stewart Scullion headed in a Geoff Salmons cross to restore our lead but in injury time (again!) Alan Gilzean headed in a Martin Chivers long throw. footage can be seen below (between 2.07 and 3.07)

Me too. I do remember the goals.Still have the programme. Peters looked so much happier than he did after the Walsall game, some 10 years later.

There was something unusual that happened in the 2-2 draw in January 1974. Blades fans were booing our penalty taker when he was about to take the penalty! Ken Furphy had been our manager for only 4 weeks and he decided that Keith Eddy was to be our penalty taker. When the ref awarded a penalty to us in that Spurs game, Blades fans were expecting Woodward to take it (he was at the top of the first division goalscoring chart at the time) but were surprised to see Eddy placing the ball on the penalty spot and many didnt like that! Eddy made no mistake from the spot but he told the reporters that he felt "narked" at the booing!

In the 2-2 draw in April 1991, Gazza was "rested" from the game and he was sat on the bench. Edinburgh and Walsh scored Spurs goals before Beesley and Deane (last minute) made it 2-2

I think you may be confusing it with the season before when Wednesday ran Spurs close for the title, but we were still in Div2 at that point.
Darren is correct of course, The Spurs game of Sept 1961 was an early home game midweek and the second game I ever attended at BDTBL. My dad took me to see the double winning team of the previous season. Owls players were probably there for the same reason :-)

Happy Christmas & good luck for the rest of the season (barring the Semi!).

Does anyone remember The Glory Game, by Hunter Davies?

Tottenham invited Davies to spend a year at White Hart Lane getting to know the players, tactics, fans directors etc., expecting the subsequent book to be a typical 1970s piece about what a great club they were. Instead, his book was a tale of the players' insecurities, arguments and social climbing in the Hertfordshire stockbroker belt. Trainer Eddie Baily was portrayed as a thick racist, Tony Want refused to play in a game because he was having a mini-nervous breakdown and the players were so unsophisticated that when they were served garlic butter with their steak in France they all complained.

The hero of the book was Steve Perryman. He was only 18 but he ordered the other players around, threw himself into tackles and best of all never moaned about the amount of tax he had to pay.

The year was 1971/2. The players had been promised that if they reached the Uefa Cup Final their wives would be put up in a plush hotel wherever the away leg was held. They did get to the final but it was against Wolves, so the wives got a fab night in Wolverhampton as their prize.

Perryman & Hoddle are my Spurs heroes. Probably will be until i am pushing up daisies.

Good book though.

Tony Want only made 50 appearances for Spurs in seven years.

A quality picture of a quality player

One of the things I admired about TC, was his balance - that photo shows he is in total control of his body, balanced and which quite rightly led TC pinging a pass exactly where it should have gone. If ever there was a graceful footballer, TC was it. Great memories.

The reason for mentioning the above, is that I have seen the same with Reed - he also has great balance.............if only he could be as good !

he needs time fulwood, T C was more mature physically when he arrived from Watford as a 17 year old but older than reed
he was 18 on new years day and if i remember correctly made his debut against spurs around that time.Reedy is barely 17
and a half and playing regulary.T C had some real physical strength for a young boy reedy is getting stronger but is way behind T C at a similar age, that means we have to be carefull how often we play him( cloughy has already mentioned this).he has great possibilities but lets not ruin him at such a young age.

yes you are correct about being carful with reed - it's shin splints they have to be careful of.

it's interesting the today in the mail, Wenger is saying that Chambers needs a rest as he has over done it - Wenger was on about kids of that age can only do 10-15 games where as Chambers has done 20+ since the start of the season.

TC did have a rather podgy look - but in those days I can remember TC was a frequent visitor to the Fiesta !!

12 of us have just booked the 1.46 from Donny to Kings Cross and the 11:30 back. When we went to WHU it was a mare as we had to do 13 stops whereas WHL is only 4 stops on the Victoria Line to Tottenham hale, thats where we got off last time to the stadium we went past 7 sisters to Tottenham Hale, ID LiKe LISTERS VIEWS ON WHETHER HE THINKS THAST THE BEST.

When we went to Upton park we got off at Liverpool Street for a few bevies it is dear as owt, straight across to Dirty Dicks and it was nearly £12 for two pints, thats £3.60 in my Sam Smiths local in Donny.

After WHU game we had extra time and penalties and last train was 11:30 and we got to train at 11.28, it was a nightmare running up them escalators for my owd ticker.

So unless Lister says different we will get off tube at Finsbury Park for much pre match beverages then back on tube to Tottenham Hale, over to you Lister.

Quite how you paid nigh on 12 for two pints in Dirty Dicks is beyond me mate! Its not that pricey.

Where you all off to? I work round there n il be going to WHL

Hamilton Hall at Liverpool Street station is a Wetherspoons. And 2 mins from the platforms to WHL or Northumberland Park.

Didn't go to TC's debut in '68 Silent? From Wikipedia:

He was transferred to Sheffield United on 1 February 1968 for £26,500. He scored on his debut against Tottenham Hotspur with a header on 26 February but missed the next game on 2 March as it was his wedding day. (Bloody lightweight! :D)

Strangely enough, it was my oldest and bestest friend's birthday last week. He's from Sheffield but has followed his dad in supporting Spurs. I bought this book for him - cracking read.

Very unlikely (I was 1 month away from being 6 years old and TC's debut was a night match) although my dad did take me to a few games to the Lane in the mid to late 1960s but he didnt think I was "ready" to be a Lane regular. I do remember going to the home games against Norwich and Cardiff in Sept 1969 but I didnt know the names of our players. It was the 2-0 win against Preston (Reece and Addison the scorers- both scored late in the game) on 17th January 1970 when I started to go to the Lane regularly, started to lean the names of our players, the names of 1st division players, looking at the league tables etc (I remember being aware at the time we were around the top of the 2nd division and Wendy were at the bottom of the 1st division)

I can promise you that Liverpool `Street area is one of the dearest I've been too in London. We usually do Camden Town and thats not too bad, for London.
But the pubs around Liverpool Street were extortionate, perhaps it was the brew of lager and whatever real ale we bought but certainly expensive.
We are thinking of getting on the tube to Finsbury Park and visiting the Worls End for one, then going to game and passing 7 sisters and getting off at Tottenham Hale as it appears that bit closer although it joins back up with the walk from 7 sisters later on.

Anyone else any actual personal evidence that Tottenham hale is a bit far to walk, please add comment.

I remember TC's first game. He played up front in that match and looked a different class at that age, even playing with other quality young lads such as Mick Jones, Alan Birchenall, Len Badger etc. The story at that time was John Harris made a bid to Watford for Stewart Scullion but the club were unwilling to sell their star player (unlike us :-( ), but Watford needed money so let us have TC. Possibly our best buy.
