This is a bit of a long shot but here goes. The reason my family are Blades is because of my Grandfather who played for the mighty RAWW between 1921 and 1924/5. We believe due to family myth or fable that Grandad played against Bolton in the 1923 cup semi final at Old Trafford when we lost 1-0 but I cannot find a team sheet online anywhere (and we are doing a family history before it gets lost in even more fog caused by the passage of time). Does anyone have the semi final team line up they could share please? I am looking for George Richardson. Grandad is front row second in from left.Sheffield United 1922.webp

According to 'A complete record of Sheffield United 1889-1999' he played the game either side, but not the SF

Incidentally, your Grandfather is one of two George Richardson's to have played for the Blades.

As well as Brian, Derek, Paul, Tom

And of course J W Richardson ... known as Pussy
One appearance, one goal, and he never played for another league club.

Pussy is my Blade of the week.

We know Grandad was injured in the leg during WW1 and sent back to a hospital in the UK so he did well to get to pay for the Blades. I knew he played with Freddie Tunstall again in later life at Boston and I went to his pub a few times as a real youngster but he died when I was still very young so never really was able to ask him about football. Thanks for the info though.

Unusual seeing a photo of a squad that had four players wearing suit and hat. Billy Gillespie (top left) is one of the four.

Its interesting to see the height, or lack of it , in the United team. I would have thought even then there would have been a 6 footer or two, but there is no one over 5'9
