Souttar

Is it possible to say that Souttar has grown into his role as commanding centre back?

I an only imagine a six foot opposition centre forward, standing next to him and quivering, before Souttar has shown his great distribution skills.

Exactly the kind of intimidating centre half this club has needed since Chris Morgan retired.

Big, scary with a decent bit of footballing skill in him. Make him the next Blades hero please.🙏

Anyone know what his contract situation is at Leicester? When does it expire? What sort of wage is he on? Seems little doubt he would jump at the chance of joining us if given the choice.
He joined Leicester for a reported £15m in Jan 2023, signing a five year deal. They wouldn’t sell for less than £10m given their well documented FFP issues and I’d guess he’s on £30-40k per week.

We’d be best served negotiating a purchase on promotion option.

It's absolutely crazy how good Souttar has been! One of the best starts to a Blades career in my memory

I love Souttar

But it’s the biggest myth in football that JOC couldn’t play in a back 4

Obviously he could but he was average to upper Championship level in a back 4. Basham was no better than average Chanpionship level. They needed an extra man next to them (John Egan) to help cover their deficiencies.

However both were up there as 2 of the best overlapping centre backs in world football. Both were also more than decent full backs. JOC particularly was great at whipping in fast crosses and Basham had fantastic stamina able to play in multiple positions all inside the same game. Remember his goal away at Leeds? Its crazy to think a central defender could be appear playing so high in attack.

Their success at SU was based on team work and overloading the wings. The Baldock/ Basham partnership was brilliant down the right, our 2 players against their full back meant with simple short passing we had a big advantage. It was the same on the left, the JOC/ Enda Steven’s partnership was fantastic

But it was the tactics that played to their strengths and brought the best out of them. This explains why no clubs were interested in buying these players for PL football.

Regards Souttar he’s been brilliant in the Championship but suspect his lack of pace would find him out in the PL.

Obviously we only stand a chance of doing a deal if we get promoted, but he needs to be the absolute priority target. Will take big money, but we must find a way to do the deal with Leicester

Needs to be signed in January on a perm but heard he’s on 30K a week but he’s worth it

Obviously a Championship club without parachute payments is unable to afford £30K a week. He’ll need to at least half his wage and hope we get promoted then we could afford £30K a week.

Also suspect Leicester would want a transfer fee too.

How can you say that? He never played in a back 4 for us outside his first few games so it’s not like there’s evidence to suggest that’s the case 😂 ‘upper championship’ is a crazy assumption for a player of his obvious quality

Souttar has been superb since he joined us. JOC was on the verge of being chosen for England towards the end of his playing days. I'm not sure if Souttar (if he was English) would be considered for selection for the national team.

That offensive-defence that we set up at the start of the 2016/17 season took a couple of games to materialise.

Partnerships were set up on both flanks - Enda / JOC/ Fleck & George with Bash.

Today we need to find the right blend up front. Out of all our attacking options there is a formula waiting to be discovered. Somewhere there's a partnership involving Brooks / Rak-Sakyi / Campbell / Moore / Brewster /Hamer that will turn 2-0 wins into 5 / 6 goal victories.

Luton fans stating yesterday they could have been on an 8-0 thrashing - I hope the management team are working on finding the right players in the correct position to turn those numerous chances into goals.

I could see a partnership of quality growing with this lad and Anel , but we must buy/loan another centre half in January, I'm far from convinced rnd or JLT are good enough to step in if we have injuries/suspensions

It’s very noticeable that Anel has got licence/confidence to drive forward now that Harry S is essentially the brick wall at the back.

Soutter is Brilliant. I like how he hangs back and clears the ball away Just like what Van dyke does for Liverpool. Anel has been great. now we have a great keeper Cooper who we can rely on. the players are starting to get to know how each other play. We can only get better.

I agree that once Anel or Souttar is out there is a drop in CB stature/quality to RND or JLT.
Gilchrist might move across but again we lose 5" or 7" in height.
The difficulty in recruiting a 6'5" CB in January is that we couldn't promise him any game time if Anel & Souttar stay fit because they are the obvious first choice pairing.
We seem to have loads of FBs in Gilchrist , Shackleton , Seriki , Burrows , McCallum & RND ...
but no obvious tall replacement for our CBs , so all we can do is hope.

Our ability to defend a high ball at the back has done a remarkable turnaround. Yesterday McCallum added to that aerial ability and stopped Lutons tactics down the left. Agree without Souttar and Moore we lose significant heading capability. Last years game against Luton is a prime example. Winning 2-1 and looking the better team by far Edwards unleashes Carlton Morris from the bench and he destroys JLT in the air leading to a 2-3 defeat. Even though Morris was injured yesterday if he'd come on in the same circumstances I'm confident we would have dealt with it easily.

Of the youngsters Sasnauskas looks to be the best header of a ball in the u21's but he is still only 17.

Not meaning to be pedantic but Bash was played in MF away at Leeds when he scored THAT goal. It was the same when we played "those lot" in the bouncing day massacre.

As incredible it would be him scoring that goal from RCB it's just simply not true.

You are right and he (Bash) was having a poor game. I think Wilder may have been about to sub him.

Yep. IIRC he'd had a similar chance, or chances, in the 1st half that he'd missed hence the "and he takes the chance this time" comment from Daniel Mann.

Anyone who starts against Leeds, can be replaced off the bench, and Wider is only half way through the rebuild!

It’s not suggesting anything but a short term replacement for the remainder of one game, or maybe two, if a key player is injured.

Cooper is an obvious exception to this emergency.

Giving off these vibes!

Is he still first choice for the Socceroos?
If so, they've got 2 World Cup qualifiers to play in the "break"
Away in Japan on the Tuesday before we play Leeds on the Friday!
Bad enough without factoring in the travel required.
Hope I'm worrying unduly.

Australia will take on China PR at Adelaide Oval, Adelaide on Thursday, 10 October (kick-off 7:30pm local/8pm AEDT)

Japan at Saitama Stadium 2002, Tokyo on Tuesday, 15 October (7.35pm local/9.35pm AEDT).

He will be fully "jet lagged" even if he is allowed to fly to the UK direct from Nippon.
