Recruiting a player from L1 to play in the PL? Madness! Oh hang on what about Enda Stevens. WeLL no he came from L2 actually. OK so that just leaves Fleck, Baldock, Lunny but I could mention JOC from Brentford reserves and Bash from Blackpool. Not sure what Division they were In when we signed him. And of course there’s also Maguire, Walker, Naughten, Rams dale all signed from a L1 club who have done alright in the PL.

It is a bit different to be fair - we didn’t sign Enda from Portsmouth then drop him into the Premier League. Same goes for all our lower league signings bar those signed last summer (all of whom were decent championship performers I believe). Our squad developed with us while we were in league one and the championship.

Having said that I certainly don’t think we should now be all “billy big bollocks” and saying that players who aren’t already established in the Championship are of no good to us. Would be happy with this signing and others like it - maybe they can make the step up straight away... maybe they can’t and they’ll need some time out on loan... either way let’s use our position as a decent PL outfit to bring in top young talent wherever they play!

5 goals in a decent league one outfit.

If this is the market we're shopping in after finishing top half of the prem deary me...

I don't know S40Blade. I think sometimes it's worth taking a punt on a player like that. There are a lot of players at the top level of football who cost millions now but could have been snapped up early in their careers from lower leagues for not a lot of money. And with wages being what they are, it's sensible to have a recruitment policy that looks to pick up these kind of players - in addition to bigger name, more expensive, players from bigger clubs.

I referred to the oracle - YouTube - to find out more about him - and I saw the clip that Booker4 has already posted.

He looks very promising to me. He seems to have got something that we haven't got much of in our squad at the moment - players who will run with the ball and dribble past opponents. I'd give it a pop personally.

Missed that Smith was loaned out again (although this isn't always the right decision: Brooks) but the point I'm making is there is no point buying players where we're just hoping they'll step up as the club is wasting money. I appreciate there is a dearth of goalscorers capable of playing in the Premier League since anybody who bags a few goals is bought at the end of the season but we need to look elsewhere for proven at a level closer to EPL (other top tiers in Europe) over buying somebody who 'hopefully' will step up 2 leagues.

You make it sound like it's mutually exclusive - it's not. No one's suggesting we should pin all our hopes on a young lad who's unproven at this level - we do need to recruit players who are closer to proven at EPL as you put it - but absolutely no harm at all in picking up some promising youngsters on the cheap - because they may well be able to make the step up. Look at Ollie Watkins for example. Plying his trade at Exeter a few years ago - looked promising then - and is likely on his way to the Prem soon for a big fee.

I like what the video shows, but we`ve been fooled before by videos, ( Higdon a prime example ).

Having said that, I`m impressed by that cameo. Good pace and skill, but above all vision and composure.

The question is, does he perform like that every game. If so gerrimin.

Neat little dance move in his celebration.

It’s the only slight concern of the CWAK tenure - a lack of academy development coming through. That would make these types of punts less necessary. Hopefully the upgrade plans will start to address the issue.

Looks a dynamic player, in keeping with a lot of players we’re being linked with. It seems CWAK are looking to inject a bit of an explosive element into the team.

I think the number of players who make the 1st team from the Academy are few and far between, under any manager. We've had a few good ones in recent years, Walker, Naughton, Maguire, Calvert-Lewin, Brooks (if you count Brooks as coming through our Academy?). I've already spanned 11 years there, Walker and Naughton arrived on the 1st team scene in 2009. Who was the last one previous to that? Maybe Michael Tonge? Now we're going back to 2000, 20 years ago.

That's just a handful of players who have made it, in about 20 years. I think that's about par for the course actually and is no reflection on the current 1st team manager, it's more a reflection on just how difficult it is to break through into the first team from the Academy. And of course, it's even harder now because it's not like we are a club playing our football in the third tier of English football. Any Academy player coming through now is most likely to go out on loan to a lower league club before they get anywhere near a sniff of making our first team squad.

I'm not concerned about the lack of good young players coming through our Academy at all tbh. Longer term, yes...it's still a good idea to cultivate our younger players, let them go out on loan to lower league clubs and develop, but I think where we are now, it's extremely unlikely we are going to "grow our own" talent that is suitable for purpose at Premier League level. We need to buy it in.

Agree 100% with all that Cerberas !
I think the ratio of players that make it is very low.
Lots of talented footballers fall by the wayside as the mental strength and athleticism is beyond most.
Yes ! it's a great life if you make it and like most football fans I had visions as a boy of playing for the club i support !.
I still try to play a bit of football on a wed !
try is the word as I can hardly kick the bloody
ball these days.
It's a mixed age ranging from 30 ish to mid seventies ,a good kick about is had..One or two are exceptional with good technic
I was never at the same level or anywhere near as good as them ! Yet ! they didnt make it.
Wilder quoted Vardy a few weeks back coming through the hard way having the resilience and talent to make it big time.
As you say Cerberas we have to keep our academy and get to level one.

to take a gamble for £5m or so on a promising player and take that risk, no signing is ever certain to succeed and this would be a relatively small gamble.

Wow, obviously that's only League 1, but that's one heck of a highlights reel. We absolutely need players like that in the long run, so I'm keen on this kid now!

Agree. Looks excellent and has the sort of attributes that trouble defences at any level.
Fast feet, good balance, eye for a pass.

Looks a better prospect than Toney, who to me - mainly seems to score goals through capitalising on defensive errors (which don't happen as frequently at this level).

My only concern would be that he looks very lightweight and at 23 isn't likely to grow.

He's a couple of cm taller than Raheem Sterling and a bag of sugar lighter.

Which I think is fine in a team that has possession most of the time and is adept at pass and move... slightly more problematic in a team that plays a more direct style and requires forward players to compete and challenge for the ball.

This is the type of signing that we have nothing to lose and everything to gain from.

Bit like Colin-Kazim-Richards when he came from Brighton and showed no fear and was not scared to have a run at the opposition and showed no fear, with have missed that kind of flair in our team.

I'd get him in just so he can convince his little brother to join us as well

No doubt be wanting £15 million now should got him in the summer like Toney

We need to guy this lad in at BDTBL and prep him for next season. got some mates who watch P'borough and say he's the real deal.

If we don't, all that will happen is Brentford buy him, and we chase them for his serves in 18 months time but now for £18m!
