Shithouse stadiums

The Riverside. Especially when half-empty and you can see the lumps of lego holding it together. Other than the fact that it is, literally, next to a river, was ever a ground more inappropriately named ?

In the shithouse new stadium stakes, it's only beaten to the bottom of the pile, for me, by the Ricoh and Wembley.

What do you think of Pride Park? As that and the Riverside are basically the same but in different locations

Strange to say, I've been in the conference facilities at PP for work, but have never seen a game there, or even been in the stands. So I can't really say. Is it exactly the same as Boro ? I didn't know that !

They might be dumps but give me places like Hillsborough and Elland Road over places like Bolton and Middlesbrough any day.

Agree about Bolton. Worst pie I've ever had was at Bolton, too.

Was looking forward to Cardiff in August, having heard encouraging things, but I thought that one was pretty grim as well.

Agree! Really wish Cardiff were still at Ninian and that's where I went in August. You just can't replace classic grounds like that. For me, a lot of the new stadiums are synonymous with modern football - plastic, sterile and characterless.

Yep. Apart from pricing, more or less the only positive for me during our recent years of disgrace in the third div was the chance to watch football in old school shithouses (as opposed to new build ones) every other week ! Crewe, Bury, Oldham, Carlisle, Port Vale. Ah, memries.

Not even remotely amusing.

You could well imagine that if we went up a certain D Chansiri Esq might put a call in to McCabe.

"Mr Kevin, hello. Have you ever thought about........"

I thought I was being clever with a little bit of winter fishing but as ever you all saw straight through me!

As we speak I imagine over on planet PorkTalk there will be a post referencing us discussing a merger..........

One of the worst grounds I've been in was the Lane, early 60s, before the BLUT was built. It was a 3-sided dump with three sheds. One of the best grounds of that era was Hillsborough. The irony is that we've got one of the best now with further improvements in the pipeline whilst theirs has degenerated into a decrepit rustbucket that needs condemning. I never envisaged that 50 years ago and I fucking love it.

I don't think Kev would be too happy with playing at the ChancerMcCabe Stadium and who would want to have the same seat as tango?

Chancer McCabe! I do like that! Excellent! Sounds like a 70's TV series about a down on his luck gambler who turns his mind to PI work....

Merger? A takeover surely?

I can see it now;

"Just been on that crap S2 forum and loads of blunts are gagging to merge wiv us cos we is bigger better older un we make up all the songs. Gagging 4 it dey are...."

What pisses me off about the west ham situation is that the owners felt the need to rename it from "Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park" to the London Stadium.

Not only is it an insanely boring name, it pisses all over the legacy of the stadium.

The best name for a new stadium I’ve seen came from some anonymous chap who dubbed the cheating lying cockney twat’s stolen stadium “The Dildodome”.

Fully agree snooty. The Sty was a great ground while we played in little old Bramall Lane. Slowly, surely and quietly we made improvements while the "Old Lady" slowly crumbled. That place now is an embarrassment to Sheffield due to recent history and unless something surprising happens, will be an embarrassment for the foreseeable future.

Burnden Park, Boltons old ground, their Bowl always gets a slagging, but what a shocker the old ground was

A Supermarket in one corner.

Hull City's had a supermarket behind it which narrowed their away end

Oldhams still is a shithole, and always will be

But my venom is reserved for Luton, plastic pitch, that twat who wanted ID Cards

Them fucks have tried every trick in the book apart from improve the Ground

Still got those Double Glazing Beach Huts down the side, 30 fuckin years they have been knobbing about ..... twats

That single tier will go a lot further back when done. Tgeyvecmanaged to mix the usual coprate "club" levels and boxes with a "kop" style end. Been following the construction closely. It looks fantastic.

Sliding pitch for nfl
Underground car park under the stadium
Fan zones
Bars stay open after match

That single tier is going to be a great stand. One of the reasons why I’m completely against the ocassionally-suggested idea of a two-tier Kop.

Picture of the construction from this week with the single tier stand taking shape...

Well, 'we're' going to have to face up to the idea of sorting the Kop out at some point. The current approved version is really just an extension at the back. So it fails to address two of the issues which most of us on this forum agree on,

1. Poor sight lines to the pitch, (too shallow a slope so people have to stand up to watch play in the penalty area at the Shoreham Street end, corners etc.
2. Related problem of legroom that is so limited as to be painful for most of us of average height.
3. Slow egress from the Kop due to congestion - too few exits; maybe not by law, but too few for comfort ? (moot point?)

Problems that it DOES address ....

4. The posts that hold the roof up & obstruct the view are to be removed.
5. Bigger capacity
6. Refreshment and toilet facities are to be brought inside - not like an outside privy which many terraced houses had and our terraces still do.

So someone has to bite the bullet, I suspect like many on here think, it must be a complete rebuild - to extend at the back while keeping the Kop more or less intact is merely to postpone the inevitable with the risk that the Kop in 20 years time may well resemble Hillsborough inasmuch as it will be completely outmoded - just look at Spurs's new Kop above.

Also, I would have thought it is logical to assume, that he lack of legroom implies that the seating plan is too dense for comfort (cf. ®yanair etc.) & that if the the kop were to be rebuilt to modern space standards, the capacity per unit area would drop, therefore, more clever use of space throughout the ground would have to be thought about ..... for me, such strategy would have to look at possibly slightly resiting and rebuilding the John Street stand ..... is that a bridge too far ?

You would've thought they'd consult the fans before building new stadiums - you know, the people who'll be using it for the rest of their lives.

But they obviously don't. Because no fan says "I want a generic identikit arena devoid of any discernible features or character whatsoever".

Bowls are much more cost effective than separate stands.
Unfortunately these days almost everything is financially driven.

Imagine if they consulted the fans and said “you can have a bowl or pay £10 a match extra for separate stands”.
I reckon most fans would choose the cheaper option.

I do think that the creeping development of high density housing (whoever it's for) along Bramall Lane is a very positive thing for the club. The way the Universities are expanding from the station towards us means that Bramall Lane is becoming more yet more city central than it already proudly has been. We should be looking at opening up facilities open all week in the South Stand, like cafés etc. This is easily done. The present cramped lightless concourse should be opened up so it faces the carpark ... not for car spotters but to form an attractive terrace which faces the sun.

The soulless in the middle of nowhere stadium Bolton built is one of the worst ones. A club with town centre match day tradition move to a ground virtually stuck out on the moors.

If there was a rebuild of the kop the only way I can see of not reducing capacity would be to fill in the corners seamlessly to the south stand and John st stands, no room for offices in the corners or a bodge job like the pukka pie corner or whatever it is called this week.

are you sure about that? Look at the corners of the new Spurs' ground - see how much denser the steel structure is at the corners and how each precast concrete terracing unit has to be individually made to a different length to get round the curve, that's why they are the last bits to get built isn't it

..... I would have thought the opposite was true really?

You’ve forgot to mention the main issue and that’s COST.
How much are fans willing to pay to get the requested improvements?
I suspect there’s little hunger for increasing matchday tickets all round before even spending a penny on players.

I’d rather have the most basic improvements, it’s still miles better than the Kop in the 70’s and 80’s
And pay the same. The Kop should ALWAYS be affordable, for me that’s essential.

Anyone wanting more luxurious seating should pay more and go in the South stand or BLUT/ corner.
