Gus Hamer's corner from the left is half-cleared by the Sunderland defence but only to the lurking Harrison Burrows 20 yards out.

He bobbles his effort through a crowd and to Anthony Patterson's left... but there will be a VAR call for infringement...

Vini Souza moves across Patterson from an offside position and though he doesn't touch the ball, that's enough of an impact for the goal to be chalked-off.

The decision is explained to the fans over the PA by Chris Kavanagh and the Sunderland fans go wild.

who put the ball in the wembley net. tyreeese campbell. that was playoff goal well worth waiting nearly 30yrs for

dont like VAR. things do even out over the season. but you only remember the things that didnt go your way. trying to be perfect in a imperfect sport

We all would take that scoreline before kick off. 45 fkin minutes, ish, to go...same again please. Proud of the performance so far.

Showing these far too much respect and letting them dictate in the last 10 minutes, impose ourselves on them and cause them problems which they already proved they can't handle,we are letting them off the hook too much.

Easily the better team in the first half. More of the same in the second please Blades.

Feck VAR!

Good first half. We've been the better team. Quality counter-attacking goal. Fair on the second (he's stood offside directly in front of their keeper) but I fail to see why we're using VAR in a play-off final in a league which doesn't use VAR. Seems really daft. Thought they've all been good. The game has past Peck by a little but he's constantly in the right places.

I do feel the Sunderland manager really dropped the ball setting up like he has.

VAR was supposed to be for clear and obvious mistakes. Ridiculous Burrow’s fabulous strike was rule out. Grrr.
I'm not one for the conspiracy stuff, but, given the very large sums of money at play, I suspect they know are very much leaned upon to scrutinise everything

Can see O'Hare coming on early in 2nd half. Closing down and movement if they and still chasing the game

For me, 2nd goal was offside. Vini was in the keepers line of sight.

Good half but Sunderland looking like they’re coming back into it.

Come on lads
It was inevitable they'd have a bit of possession, especially after the VAR call gave them a lift.

Good game management from us, we can't play 100mph for 90mins so take the sting out of it.

Cooper's only had one save, from that scuffed Rigg shot.

For those who like this sort of thing. AI's assessment of the current odds.:

As of half-time in the Sheffield United vs. Sunderland Championship play-off final, with the Blades leading 1-0, the live betting odds for Sheffield United to win the match (full-time result) are approximately 1.42 (or -238 in American odds), according to the latest in-play market data.

Key Context for the Odds:

  1. Current Scoreline Advantage: Sheffield United's lead at half-time strengthens their position, as they’ve been defensively solid this season (conceding only 0.8 goals per game on average) .
  2. Historical Trends: Play-off finals often feature tight, low-scoring games, and teams leading at half-time have a strong record of holding on to win .
  3. Sunderland’s Struggles: The Black Cats have scored fewer than 1.5 goals in 11 of their last 12 away games and have been inconsistent in attack recently.

Alternative Betting Markets:

  • Sheffield United to win to nil: Offered at 11/4 (3.75) pre-match, this could still hold value if their defense holds firm .
  • Under 2.5 goals: A likely outcome given the stakes, with odds around 8/15 pre-match .
