Well it's the summer break and the rumour mill is in full swing.
So if like me you are not a great fan of fiction, why not listen to some actual fact at Portland Works 100 Metres from Bramall Lane.

Heritage Lecture: Sheffield United Folklore and Fables
6 June @ 19:00 - 21:00
£5.00
On Thursday 6 June in the Portland Works MakerSpace, our speaker will be John Garrett, the Club Historian for Sheffield United Football Club.
John has worked for the club for the last 20 years. His job covers a multitude of roles including community engagement, supporter liaison and arranging the fans’ and manager’s forums. He is perhaps best known as the driving force behind the club’s superb museum, “Legends of the Lane”. Football for John is more than just a game, it is something that gives people a sense of community and place, something that tells us who we are.
“The whole area round here came about as a result of the football club. The roads, the businesses, everything. We are just the current custodians of the football club and is up to us to pass it onto the next generation.” [Sheffield Star 8th Oct 18].
Times:
  • 18:30 Doors Open
  • 19:00 Lecture Begins
  • 21:00 Lecture Ends
Free refreshments are included in the admission price.

"Good evening ladies and gentlemen.

You may be aware of former Python, Michael Palin...."

I went to something similar a few years ago at Crystal Peaks library. I would highly recommend if you have this Thursday evening free.

Some interesting links between Portland Works, Sheffield cutlery and Dem Blades.

Two of the world's greatest inventions that have been exported across the globe. Football and stainless steel. All within 100 yards of each other.

What do Sheffield do about it?

Jack shit.
Maybe it's time some of us Blades did then?;) Will you be there bornablade ? Be great to meet some Blades who might like to explore the subject and create a story.
Thoughts?

Though if you come and listen to John Garrett , Mr McCabe is trying to do something about it.

I instigated the push from the Portland Works to get the ties to the club strengthened.

This sounds great but I’ve got tickets to see the opening showing of the maradona documentary as part of docfest. Which also looks bloody good.

2 of us going whose great great grandfathers had roles in the club during our most successful period, well FA cup wins.

Ah gutted i am away, never met him, but funnily enough, i've emailed John Garrett about something else today. The reply i got to my email was absolutely brilliant and he comes across so well in his emails. I've had correspondence with him for the last 6 years and he's always been extremely accommodating, engaging and friendly in his replies.

I am sure this will be a very interesting evening Tom Bott

And diplomat what is that Maradona documentary? Is it just on 6th or will there be other showings? I read Hand of God years ago which was extremely interesting

It’s on at the city hall on Thursday and the showroom on Friday and then presumably on release at cinemas afterwards. It’s by Asif Kapadia who did the Senna and Amy Winehouse documentaries. He’s focusing on his time at Napoli, which I expect to be pretty bonkers.

Yeah that was the mental bit of the book! Sounds really good, will keep an eye out for it and will be looking forward to your review!

Just to let everyone know the planned Heritage lecture planned for Thursday evening has now been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances

Yes I was just awaiting the official notice. I'm pushing for late August early September.

Apologies to those who were looking forward to it.

Due to unforeseen circumstances the Heritage Lecture on Thursday 6th June is to be rearranged for a later date. Apologies for the short notice.

The rearranged lecture will now be combined with the unveiling of the newly commissioned plaque dedicated to Harry Brearley and kindly sponsored by the McCabe family on behalf of Sheffield United FC.
