Not saying sharp should retire, or that he's anywhere close to hanging up his boots. But when that time comes, would you take him as a coach?

Personally I would, think he bleeds red and white, would he a fantastic mentor to any forward with an abundance of knowledge. Discuss?

The respect the current squad hold for Sharp is truly unprecedented.

His character and commitment to SUFC has complemented the manager ever since he arrived.

Every player interviewed pays respect to our club captain.Recently it was Basham and one after another they all confirm the major role Sharp has contributed to our success.

Exactly my point. Talisman in the first team. Would be very easy to carry that on if (when) he retired, he slotted into the coaching staff.

Forget Blade.

Forget BladeyBlade. A myth perpetuated by a certain individual who simply can’t accept that 80 odd goals in 4 seasons is a “coincidence” of being party to a good set of lads behind him. Nothing more than blind, ignorant, clap trap to accentuate a point that has been, beyond ANY doubt, borne of Agenda driven hogwash. From day 1. (I beg of you to challenge this to the contrary. Pretty please in fact 😀).

Forget, if it is even possible, that his Peers as recently as this week selected him as the very best, consistently, and without the baggage of clap trap described as above, among the top 2 players of his type in the championship in the last decade. So no 1 season wonder here (as if it needs spelling out 😉).

Forget in fact, the sentimental stance that has primarily been adopted across the masses that the man should. bluntly, slip quietly / permanently in to a playing retirement of one description or another.

The man, the myth, the legend, still has a job of work to do on the green green stuff.

If that makes me the unsilent minority, so be it.

My informed ( go fuck yourself if you think otherwise) opinion is that we would now have MORE points on the board if our main man had been afforded a more representative opportunity at doing what he does best.

There is absolutely nothing that could convince me to the contrary.

Don’t bother trying 😀.

UP THE BLADES.

Sharp should stay beyond retirement
Basham should stay beyond retirement
Mcgoldrick too

should build the culture of the club through keeping the characters who are in the squad now.
Fuck character. It’s a cliche.

Character will ONLY take you so far.

Ability, proven, dependable, statistically beyond reproach ability will always endure.

FACT.

Not sure who should stay beyond their playing days but we should look at Liverpool.

It's taken them 30 years to get over changing from the boot room philosophy and get back to a position to be champions again.

We've got summat that I've never seen before and it would be foolhardy not to build on our Bladey Bladeyness we have by not looking at the Shankley model.

Merry Christmas and I hope the hangover passes quickly.

I try to avoid romantacising about Sharp becoming Blades boss, but when you look at the logic it could work.

Above all he adores the club. Like Wilder.

Honest pro with a good work ethic. Lol Wilder.

Has leadership skills and knows how to deal with people. Like Wilder.

Fiercely competitive. Like Wilder.

Fat lad from Sheffield. Like Wilder.

I wasn't suggesting him as a potential replacement for wilder, more a role similar to the one deano had a few years ago. Team coach, someone to train the lads during training etc.

Is Sharp in danger of becoming the next Chris Morgan?

Iconic player for our club, but destine for pastures new?

There is only so much room at the inn...............

Has anyone asked Billy what he wants to do next? Has he done his coaching badges yet? He might want to be involved in coaching, or he could be just as happy in an ambassador role.
I'm sure the club and the fans will back him, whatever he decides.

Billy is currently doing his coaching badges as far as I'm aware.

Thanks for the response, even though its a bit, maybe. Plenty of pros do it late in their career, often as a an afterthought.
I was hoping for something more definitive, like, "he is doing hs badges with a view to working with united youngsters"?

Billy accepts his role now is that of a secondary nature. While mcgoldrick Mc Burnie and Mousset are fit he will be cheering on from the bench. LUCKY for us just now he's content with that. He may get tempted by the offer of a starting role at a championship club but like Brian Deane will always be magnetically drawn back to the Lane. Even if he left would doubt it would be the last we see of him

Wilder's at the club Monday to Friday watching his squad. If he sees Sharp upping the players performance, being a role model, helping our players to improve and giving a solidity and 'bladeyness' then he's going to keep him around.
We've got a bigger budget now, maybe Chris thinks Billy's wage is worth paying? If we were in L1 losing £5 million a season, he'd perhaps get him off the books, but in the PL, we can pay him his salary.
Once he's no longer of use, he will go.

I don't think he is as content as you might think. Billy Sharp wants to be starting football matches and scoring goals.

In response to the OP - I've absolutely no idea whether Sharp would be interested in being a coach or be any good at it.

I think he is a club legend - and I don't use that term lightly. But that doesn't mean he'd be any good at being a coach. I think there are other qualities - and qualifications - which are more important than being a popular player. Otherwise, I'm sure TC would have been a "coach" for example.

If Billy's got any sense he'll be carefully considering his options right now - because it's becoming clear that he's not going to feature too often in the starting 11 this season. I think his options are to possibly move on loan to another club - and maybe the Championship would be the highest level option he's offered - or look at making a lucrative move abroad for the last couple of years of his playing career. He could stick around here of course and hope to force his way into the first 11, but there will be new strikers joining the club in January and more in summer, and he's only going to fall further behind in the pecking order I'm afraid.

I also think that if he'd been in the team he'd have buried at least half, if not more, of the chances we've missed. But whether we'd have created them in the first place, I don't know. Whatever he chooses to do, I hope he enjoys it and is successful at it. But I don't think any player should continue on at the club in a different role, just because of how they were as a player. They need to have potential in that new role as well.

In response to your last para only.

Agreed. And so the question has to be “why not more minutes” ?

The only logical answer, from my perch, being that Wilder did not spend multi millions on him and thus doesn’t feel a need to justify !!

Has performed well in the minutes he has had.

Not for a moment saying he should start all the time. Absolutely not.

But he’s been short changed. And he will be very aware of this !!!!!

Yep. Totally with you on that. It feels like Wilder is weaning him off the club. The thing is, and it's something I posted a lot about in the past, we absolutely DO need pace up front in this division. And frankly, Billy has none. Mousset is a revelation because he's explosive with pace and catches people out. I think Billy is still the best finisher at the club, but he relies on others to make those chances for him most of the time - nothing wrong with that - it's not a criticism, but that's why the likes of Moose and McBurnie will be ahead of him. McBurnie also offers height and an aerial threat. Again, Billy can't compete with that. Despite this, I would like to see more of Billy, particularly in matches where we are looking comfortably ahead. Or, against lesser teams, like the one we play tomorrow.

I would think Sharp will always have a role while Wilder is the gaffer,if of course he wants it.
I dont think Sharp is ready to retire yet and will play at a lower level for a few years.
Wouldnt surprise me though if he came back especially if Wilder his here.
Wilder and Sharp must get on well as Billy is tolerating being benched like he is! I will be surprised if it stays the same beyond this season.
2 legends together that's how you build a boot room.

Billy is first and foremost a goalscorer. I would have liked him to be getting 25-30 minutes most games. We probably would have had a rew more points.
I'm sure he will contribute before the season ends when I can see him playing for another couple of years at a lower level and SCORING GOALS.
After that? Would love to see him back at the Lane in some capacity but I want KWAK to be the management team for the next 40 years at least.
Merry Christmas to you all.
