Sexist chants at Lane, are we guilty?

What would be nice is if instead of slavering and slavishly reporting on the latest "who said what" outrages (and opening comments to continue the "debate", the Stir actually came out with a Leader piece condemning this race to the bottom all of the Cities' bellends are seemingly hell bent upon. Something the clubs could get involved with too. The City was rightly proud of the campaign to take the Semi Final to Wembley all those years ago and one horrible incident aside, the Media contrasted the atmosphere of the Sheffield game against the toxicity of the North London one. Taking place today, I'd suggest it'd be the opposite. How has this happened and why isn't it being pulled up?

It's probably just me, but I don't see women as possessions, I don't see women making their own sexual decisions as slags, I don't see people of south asian descent as figures of ridicule, I don't see any race/sex/sexuality as inferior or as the punchline to a joke, neither do I see being the victim of rape as a joke. I just take the rather simplistic view that if a phrase or word is at worst illegal or at best socially unacceptable then I don't use it, whether I be at the match, the pub or work. The excuse that it was legal or socially acceptable 30 yrs ago and that's why it's still being sung at a match doesn't cut much ice with me. It's less about being outraged, more about culturally/socially evolving as a human being from the point of birth to the point of death.

Fantastic post. A like isn't quite enough. :D

Hardly "in depth" though Danny. Chris Holts is more of a "why oh why" piece to be honest, more at home on the Mail's letters page.

Sarah Marshalls tackles the issue more head on, but less forcibly than Lee Bullens wife who deserves respect for her stance. At least Caborn got his name in the press again. ((Which may have skewed my judgement somewhat. Always a man looking for a cause that won't take up too much of his time)

But it is 'a Leader piece condemning this race to the bottom all of the Cities' bellends are seemingly hell bent upon', to quote raul, no? You can go as in-depth as you like but it's mostly morons who think that such behaviour is acceptable because it happens at a football game

Still nothing new that hasn't already been discussed at length on here and will have been on Owlstalk. Or in the Star?
I suppose when your by-line is "email" there's not that much depth to head down to.

It's filler, in, out, onto the next dog bites man story already discussed at length.

Forgive me, what do you mean 'when your by-line is "email" there's not that much depth to head down to' Sean?

Football chants are not meant to be taken so seriously,I myself have never walked with a widdle or talked with a squark or kicked a deceased Wednesday fan in the head and scrotum

Even 'Bladesmen' and 'Shoreham Boys'. It's not really very inclusive, when you think about it. I wonder if they will die off eventually.

Is claiming we'll shag their women sexist? We don't claim we'll be taking them by force or against their will. It might be worded in a boisterous way but maybe we dont mention we are planning to wine and dine them first because it doesn't fit into the song.
The song is a bit dated but it is probably 30years old, it's from a different time (which we know doesn't always make that acceptable) but I don't know of too many women that it's upset and I personally love it.

I honestly don't care at all. As a 30 something white male there's little I can be offended by, is there even an "ism" you can throw at that category?

I basically just pointed out a few examples where people could take offence. I did similar in the CW's daughter thread by confirming that our precious little fan base named a rape in a song. Some named her on here, some were served with criminal records after naming her on twitter.
I was just furthering the debate as i really can't abide the "surely not Sheffield United fans, we're perfect" stance.

All the bullshit articles, regurgitated stories, poor grammar and spelling, unchecked facts etc, stem from those who have "email" below their name.

There have been quite a few examples over the last couple of weeks. You were probably on holiday because there was no defence of them made ( not that there was one available) .

I'm still outraged,am I okay to sing United because I don't want to offend the opposition supporters

These things are much more prevelant at away games. Which is possibly why some have never heard them sung.

You mean the email link that allows you to click and, er, email the writer? :)

Nicely set up Danny04. Well done

Any comment on my point though, about people, presumably being paid as journalists, producing error ridden shite on a regular basis ? The stuff you ignore, When the paper has a crumbling circulation? Could the two be related?

Edit
And quickly altering articles after being ridiculed by the mouth breathers on football forums? :)

It's not really a new thing though is it? At least nowadays the print doesn't come off on your arse.

I only ever read the online bit when linked on here. Imagine if they made as many mistakes in the printed version?

It's taken longer than I thought, but it was only a matter of time before the mustachioed crap Dutch right winger reappeared.and was back on topic.

Yes, drop in form and it's back Gray. Wait until Cheds playing.

Lot of presumptions there, Sean

I haven't read it for at least 30 years but from what I can remember, they did.

A friend of mine is a regular critic of the Star on Facebook. He's now become just a wum because the same people follow him around on there defending the paper and abusing him He's been assured none of them actually work there......

He should probably get out a bit more.
