Excellent. I was waiting for his name to be brought up again now we have an increased budget. When The Star dedicate an article to dropping a name like this it usually means there's concrete interest.

I wonder if we'd try for him on loan or permanently?

He's a perfect example of the type of player to spend a good fee on. Is capable of 15 goals minimum in this league and will only get better.

But he signed a new contract at Southampton last summer and will probably be on more than 20k p/w.

This would be an excellent signing for the club and would show that perhaps we are looking to move up a notch

I presume loan only due to figures involved

I hope it comes off.

I, for one, won't be getting too excited about this one solely on the strength of James Shield raising it (again).

Either he generally doesn't have a clue who is likely to arrive or he doesn't dare say before the club confirms but I can't remember a single transfer where he was first to break the news. In fact he seems to get most of his leads from social media.

I suspect it's more a case of him finding ways to pad out column inches - remember when he wrung 3 weeks of articles out of the press conference announcing the appointment of Atkins?

Bring back Tony Pritchett!

I hope not if it's anything like the crazy contract that I heard 'arry Redknapp brought him to Brum on last year

I take your points about him being a good player, but "15 goals mininum" is a bit optimistic considering he got 11 and 6 in his last 2 seasons.

Note 'capable'. He's only played for poor teams in the Championship. He did well at Blackburn before last season. If he played around 40 games in our team I'd bet on him scoring 15+.

Btw, this article from a Southampton fan site indicates he's likely to leave permanently. https://readsouthampton.com/2018/06/17/sam-gallagher-linked-with-sheffield-united-switch/

Don't want to state the obvious but if this lad and Lenihan are as good as some seem to think how come Blackburn got relegated? Takes more than 2 to tango I know but given they were centre half and centre forward they cant have been that good can they ?

Hmm! Dunno Frieth, slightly flawed logic that to me. Sabella and Kenworthy were in our relegated team in the 1980's. I think they were two of the best footballers I've seen for United. The problem was the other 9!

and now having done my Youtube scouting...don't bother just don't...

I read the article and all it seems is speculation that we MIGHT be reconsidering an approach for Gallagher as The Star was aware of previous interest. But that doesn't mean we're going back in for him now, nor Sinclair. Saying that who knows. But the article headline of Blades weighing up move for Gallagher is misleading to me, unless as you say Ricky that he has dropped his name in from a tip off, as opposed to just on previous interest.

That article is utter shit and refers to the story from The Stir, it says nothing.

It's a Southampton website and suggests he's likely to move on permanently.

But based on the article in the Star which then prompted the question for the fans to answer 'should he move on'?
Nothing from Southampton FC themselves :(

According to the sensational, hold the front page, breaking news, we must decide whether to resurrect our interest in the player. Really, Jim?

When is the deadline day for this mandatory decision? How many points will we be docked for giving the matter no fucking thought whatsoever?

He looks like an out and out target man but not much more from those highlights. But he is young and we don't currently have that option other than Hanson and he isn't good enough for this level. Its only brief highlights though and always difficult to assess from those.

If he hasn't got a good goal to minute ratio and doesn't look good from highlights, I'd say don't bother. The fans are so desperate to sign somebody it looks like 'we' are demanding anybody and hoping for the best. If they aren't out there save your money and give our squad and youth a chance.
I'm filing Gallagher with Hogan, Toney, Eisa as not good enough. Only Marquis so far who would be a 'maybe'.

According to the Daily Mirror he’s on £10k per week at Southampton but was being paid £18k per week by Birmingham as part of his loan deal.

Never understood the plaudits this guy seems to get. Granted I've only seen him 4/5 times, but he's done nothing every game.

There must be a reason so many Championship clubs were interested in him last summer. He was very in demand.

That would be a further explanation of why he went to Birmingham.

If it is only 10k p/w at Southampton we could have a chance of getting him permanently. Would be a bit surprising though because 20k p/w seems to be the minimum for any young PL player with two arms and two legs.

I don't doubt your predictions, I'd fancy him to 15+ too. But, just to be picky, I think if you're describing somebody as "capable of 15 goals mininum in this league" they should of scored 15 goals at some point.

I think it's more accurate to say "Used properly, in a good team, there would be a good chance of him getting 15+"

Sorry to be a pedant.

The fact he's on £10k a week explains why we are probably in for him. Doubt we could afford a permanent bearing in mind Southampton were looking for £7m last year. Worth a loan though.

Hang on - you're saying that Sam Gallagher (22 years old with 17 goals at Championship level in 76 appearances for two struggling teams) and Scott Hogan (26 years old with 28 goals in 83 Championship appearances) aren't good enough but John Marquis (26 years old with 5 Championship goals in 42 appearances) is?

There's a reason that Marquis has made the majority of his appearances at League 1/2 level and the others are established second tier players.

Should have.

I remember them apparently wanting £7m, but if they got a £2m loan fee out of Redknapp, that could possibly be knocked off the £7m, then to add to that he had a disappointing season, so maybe that would put the asking price below £5m.

£3m with add ons could be possible and would be a good deal. It would be like a modern day version of the deal for Ched back in 2009! Would be a very similar signing.

After watching the goals clip , it's Brum's no 19 I'd like - his pace in attack scares defences + puts goals on a plate for Sam , who doesn't even bother to acknowledge the assists in the celebrations.

Another video of him here, at Southampton and Blackburn.
