We've got equal if not greater potential in my view. If we get back to the PL and can stay there for a few seasons we'll push 40,000 with an increased Lane. Southampton might say similar but they're ground is a crap soulless bowl and their fans are no where near as good as their nearest Pompey.

40,000 really ?
Thats something i would expect to see on Porktalk.

I, for one, really don't get this fascination about size of clubs. What does it matter and even is it had any bearing on anything at all, its measurement is subjective.

I think it matters to the players. Waghorn....Ipswich or Sheffield United ? Hogan...Villa or Sheffield United ? It will play a part in both of their decisions about where they want to play this season. Admittedly money will play a bigger part !!!!

Southampton have the advantage of actually being in the PL of course. As they have been for 18 of the last 25 seasons. We've played the grand total of 1 PL season in the last 25 years.

They've also been in 2 Cup finals and played in Europe 3 times in this period. These are things we have either never done or not done in living memory.

Potential? As Dave Bassett said, potential gets you the sack.

We're still a bigger club in my view. They've being more successful of recent years granted but size wise I still believe we have a bigger fan base and potential, although as you say potential is only potential.

I'm struggling to see many categories in which we are a bigger club than Southampton to be honest. More trophies admittedly but we are approaching a century of drought on that front. They have had more recent success, produced better players than us recently, have a similar sized stadium. It's not cap doffing to recognise these things. It is however counter-productive to hark back to successes of a century ago as remotely relevant today. The Wanderers have 5 major trophies, same as us! It's right and fine to be proud of our historical successes but it's also right and fine to be embarrassed at the time elapsed since they occurred. The 2 aren't mutually exclusive.

Our stadium doesn't go by the name Mary.

Fan base wise I believe we're bigger and if we'd had the success they've had over recent years then I think we'd have increased the Lane to 40,000 and would be getting to full capacity on a regular basis. Its all conjecture of course but that's my view and baring in mind we've spent 6 seasons in Division 3, to have an average attendance of 27,000 is some feat - more than Southampton got when they got promoted in 2012.

There's not much in it granted but I won't have anyone convince me that they're a bigger club than us.

Medical bulletin. There is an outbreak of Bladey Inferiority Complex, spreading outwards from S2. Those of a nervous disposition are advised to stay indoors and keep caps firmly positioned on heads.

Southampton. Fucking Southampton.

Fuck I thought I had gone on Porktalk by mistake with all these delusions of grandeur. I'm 63 been a blade all my life. I live in Southampton now and quite simply no we aren't bigger than them . It worries me that maybe the deluded ones have actually crossed from the dark side and are becoming our deluded !!!

But we are currently inferior. They are a current Premier League side and have spent many, many more years than us there over the last 2 decades. They have played European football and appeared in cup finals. They have a better academy than us and have produced much better players. Some of us would like United to emulate the recent success of Southampton. Others, it would seem, wish to live in the past while the rest of the footballing world pulls further away. Luckily Wilder is a progressive manager who sees it like it is. The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there.

We should walk away if Southampton seriously want £7m. I'm guessing the Waghorn bid going public is also an attempt to get Southampton to lower their fee. The only way we should consider anything like £7m is if we did a similar deal to the Ched one and included a number of add ons.

The Waghorn bid is to buy Waghorn. Tufty has been consistent from minute one that he wants two strikers. Two different types of striker. The two primary targets were Gallagher and Hogan. The latter has proved impossible so Tufty has switched to Waghorn. They aren’t mutually exclusive and Waghorn isn’t an alternative to Gallagher.

Football didn’t begin with the Premier League. Southampton are a small club with nothing like our fan base or potential.

They’ve won a total of one trophy. One, in that far country known as the past.

Minnows.

I never said it did. I don't know your age but I infer from your postings that you might have a chance of remembering their 1 trophy though. History resonates but it also diminishes. It's highly likely there isn't a human being alive today that remembers our last major trophy. That isn't something to be proud of, it's shameful and unworthy of a club that wishes to be described in any way, shape or form as 'big'. Fortunately Wilder sees it as I do. Yes, we have the potential to overtake Southampton, but we have no divine right to so do, and no amount of century old silverware will help us.

I'm not deluded mate, its just my opinion. I don't see why it worries you quite frankly, its only opinions and its only football! I am entitled to my opinion and I've given my reasons, I'm just repeating myself otherwise. In summary though, I believe if we'd had the last 5 seasons they'd had I reckon we'd have moved on significantly, both in terms of fan base and in terms of the ground, which I believe with success can be one of the best in the country - far superior I might add to the soulless bowl that Southampton play in.

A few years ago Blackburn won the PL and spent the majority of 20 years in the PL. They went back to where they came from and crowds were around 12,00 last season. I suspect many of their fan base thought that they were bigger than us 5 years ago, certainly 15. I never saw them as bigger than us. Its not arrogance to say that, its just based on what I've observed and although Southampton are much bugger than Blackburn I don't see them as bigger than us, but there's not much in it in my view.

Our fans say we don’t want him on loan. Rumours he’s moving for mega money. Our fans do make me laugh.

No one said its our divine right mate. I certainly didn't. Southampton are a club we should be looking to emulate. As I say there are many more clubs with more silverware than us but success isn't the full story, otherwise Forest are arguably in the top 6 in the country for what they achieved under Clough. I bet most of our fans think we're bigger or as big as Forest and yet it seems most on here see us as smaller than Southampton, largely because of recent seasons. Things change over the years for sure but I don't see Southampton's recent success as anything remarkable in terms of changing the size of the club. They are undoubtedly far bigger than they were in the days of the Dell but if they end up back in the Championship I wouldn't say they would stand out like Villa and I hate to say it Leeds.

Those two are huge clubs and with some decent backing can argue to be among the biggest in the country.

I'll finish with this: I totally get that we don't want to be like Wednesday fans who see themselves as one of the top 8 clubs in the country and call themselves Massive. I don't claim that we've any divine right to be up there and there many similar clubs to us who are also not in the PL. I'm thinking of Derby, Forest, Middlesborough, Leeds and of course Wednesday. But I don't see it as arrogant to suggest that we are bigger than Southampton. They're not one of the big 8 or so in my view, nor are we either of course and neither are Leicester who have won the Pl recently.

Its all opinions, just opinions and I rate what Southampton have done, they're a club print for us for sure.

How did a thread about the possible incoming of Sam Gallagher degenerate in to Blades are a bigger club than Southampton.

You could always start a new thread if that's the topic you want to discuss, as for the rest of us (i think), at this stage of the close season we are more interested in possible transfers, in and out.

Probably because nothing has publicly concluded on Gallagher. Threads don't always stick exactly to the subject they started with but it will no doubt return to when we know where Gallagher is going. You're right to draw it back in but its only a forum not Pride Ministers Question time;).

I totally agree with SteveBlade that its a tedious argument that I've fully let myself get into but I don't want to start a new debate on it, even I'm not that sad!:D

Because it's more interesting than nothing happening on the Gallagher front (or indeed on the Hogan front) day after day after day.

One of the things I enjoy most about our forum is it’s ability to move deftly from the prescribed topic into something entirely different. Imagination, creativity and even surrealism just adds to the mix.

I still say we need a separate “England Wank” section, though.

£7m for a kid who scored 6 goals last season as a striker and has under 20 in his entire career.
That's it, shop abroad!
Shocking innit !
Another £5m and you could get David Brookes, who has done even less in his short career !

Fair do's Booker but as i said, start a new thread. It gets frustrating when you click on a thread that is about a potential incoming striker for an update only to find the subject matter has been changed.

Not having a personal dig mate as you are an interesting and regular poster.

No. It really isn't more interesting at all. It's frustrating because people, including me, click on the link for an update and find the subject matter has changed and is being discussed by a minority. A subject matter that is a nonsense at that.

Start a new thread.

Ha ha ha....agree to disagree on the change in subject when it's both not related and an utter nonsense topic of schoolyard arguments.

My dad's bigger than you dad......nah, nah, nahnahnah !
