Shrewsbury look set to trial safe standing at out of the closet meadow
I have reservations on large scale standing areas but such as in the photo below would replace the farce at the back of the kop , even a rebuilt one where everyone stands for most of the game

Point of order m'lud - they play at The New Meadow stadium now ;)

The insane safety obsession in this country hamstrings the clubs to a large extent . The 'authorities' are doing as much as they possibly can to make it appear unattractive and not viable.

It's completely unnecessary for it to lead to capacity reductions and financial losses but if it would, it will put many clubs off.

The ignorant, backward cunts want to drag this out for as long as possible in the hope that football becomes so sanitised that the desire for standing areas is minimal.

What we want in this country is stadiums full of grey hair and small children. And I'm sure that's what we'll get.

Football fans in England have a huge amount of power, the real problem is they are unorganised and have no idea how to collectively use it.

There's much hypocrisy over this from the authorities for me.

The whole situation is so hypocritical and illogical it’s actually quite funny.

A common reason for not wanting safe standing implemented is “ we don’t want a return to what happened at Hillsboro”
But have the Authorities forgot that the fans were found to be totally blameless in that event.
So the recommendations made by the Taylor report should be reviewed as the reasons for the disaster was nothing to do with standing. Also all the data/ evidence proves that safe standing is safer than the current arrangement where people stand in the current stands. It’s madness.

How come standing is allowed at cricket and rugby matches.
How come standing is deemed safe in league 1 and 2 but not in the PL and Championship?
How comes it’s proven as totally safe in Germany and at Celtic in Scotland.

I believe that there’s something behind the scenes, probably a distrust/ discrimination of traditional football fans.
The Authorites want to take the game away from the working classes and give it the prawn sandwich brigade paying high prices.

Frustrating for those who want to stand but my knees say fuck it.

i have been led to believe they will be trialing safe standing in the south stand in the 2019/20 season.

A block is having all the seats removed and they are welding 1200 zimmer frames together

#werthersarmy :D

Another example of hypocrisy is Brentford FC.

The current legislation says after 3 years in the top 2 divisions every club must become allseater however in special circumstances permission can be given for exceptions. Brentford intend to build a new stadium in 2 or 3 years, so the government have allowed them to remain as an old fashioned standing stadium.

So is Griffin Park safe or not?

The other hypocrisy is that on the allseater Kop at Anfield everyone stands.
It’s a total farce where stands are filled with seats and the majority ignore them and stand.
Surely each club should be allowed to design their own stadiums how they see fit, as long as it passes a strict safety test.

I've said before (probably on this thread!), there's a simple, cost effective, flexible solution.

Keep the seats, but designate certain areas as standing areas.

Put a small rail along each row if needs be.

This is effectively how it is anyway up and down the country. Large areas of stadiums are stood up (with no problems whatsoever, incidentally).

All this would do is make it official and open the door to the possibility of a more complete conversion to standing areas, when the fuckwitted 'authorities' realise that noise and atmosphere doesn't automatically translate to trouble and disorder.

Common fucking sense. An easy trial that would cost nothing.

What if that's put into action and the atmosphere doesn't improve? Where's the guarantee that people who won't sing sitting down will suddenly start when they can stand?

There's a fallacy that the atmosphere died at BL when it became all seater. Well, we all sat three rows from the back, and I can tell you that the atmosphere was great. That atmosphere, like it was just before, was created by the old fogeys that are criticised now. The fans following on just haven't been able to continue it because times have changed. For every fan like you, sadly there are three or four bullying working kids behind counters, throwing beer around and shoving cheap crap up their noses, who make their noise on concourses not the stand. Rather than slate the older fans, you need to look at your own age group who fail to generate atmosphere in numbers, like generations of Blades have previously. And it's not just in poor years. We've been shit for periods before.

If it was done properly, surely the atmosphere would only improve, and even if not, fans would at least officially have the choice to sit or stand without hassle or conflict.

I don't slate the older fans. I wouldn't expect them to lead the chants. As you say it's the younger ones who don't do enough. The likes of me are in a small minority. Too many of the 'likely lads' are cretinous fuckwits with barely a brain cell between them who just don't get it at all. How the hell do you solve something like that?

Obviously times have changed and I see that said a lot. But what do you think has changed most, what's the biggest reason for the difference in the way fans approach supporting their team?

I was playing devils advocate with the what if....

As I said, you are in the minority. The people we are on about aren't really likely lads, just a bunch of clowns who feel safe in numbers, whilst in amongst there own fans, thinking they are the business, but never turn up where it can come on top if you get lairy, numbers or not.

I've no idea. You're trying to get something going through your own efforts and these twats who can sing at half time at away games don't want to know.

Things have changed. It's often blamed on the prawn sandwich brigade. Well we don't have a lot of that at BL. Quite a few are more interested in posting half time videos up than backing the team, they don't strike me as middle class.

I think football simply means less to people now, fans generally feel more distant, largely due to all the money and wide coverage. And this country has done a great job of shitting all over the working class fans. But it's hard to completely explain.

The twats you talk about don't want to know about anything supporter led, but they wouldn't want to know about anything club led either as that would be 'plastic'. Fuck knows what it'd take for them to be interested in actually doing something positive for our support. We probably need some drug lord super Blade on Twitter to advertise a singing section with free coke for anyone who turns up...

I thought safe standing was still prohibited in England and Wales? It would be great to see the new Kop entirely safe standing! A bit like this!
Wow , how steep is that kop ? Fantastic !

This is the Fritz Walter Stadion from my favourite German team Kaisurslaughtern. I've liked them ever since 1992! :D

That's a great one isn't it? With it being precious Liverpool.

And that's the issue. If one club in the top tier is granted permission for a standing area, the rest will follow. Trouble is, it was West Brom who have tried it - one of the majority of clubs who just make the numbers up. They'd bend over backwards if it was Liverpool - with their blemish-free record of crowd behaviour...
