Bassett had a right go at Tom Cowan after that game (using a few terms that weren’t so PC, even in those days). Cowan went down like s sack of spuds after getting lightly shoved in the face (possibly by Roy Keane) and Bassett made it very clear that he didn’t tolerate diving.

Anyone who is old enough to have seen him v. Barcelona in the 83/84 Cup Winners Cup 1/4 final 2nd leg, knows what a player he was. The booze & injuries caught up with him, and dulled his talents.

In his prime Robson was a dynamic, game-changing midfielder. By the time the PL came into being he was too slow and relied on his reputation to avoid a booking every game.

Robson wasn’t called “Captain Marvel” for nothing, a real box to box midfielder, fantastic all rounder equallly good as a defensive midfielder as he was as an attacking midfielder. Still rated as one of Man Utd best ever players with a great scoring record (for a midfielder).

Little story about Mr Robson, I used to work in a swanky hotel in Accrington behind the bar, he was manager of West Brom at the time, and they were playing Blackburn the next day and we're staying there. I was on shift that night and him and his asst at the time a certain Nigel Pearson were in the bar, they spent a few hours there drinking bud, sorting out final tactics I suppose, have to say he was a decent enough fella, but they had both had one too many I think, so much so at one point Pearson went outside on the phone, Robbo went the loo and just left all the paperwork on the table, I had a sneaky look and it was their actual line up for the game, I was gobsmacked at how unprofessional it was, it's lucky for him I wasn't a Blackburn fan or I would have been on the phone giving them Their line up, as I said nice enough fella but frightening he was in charge here

Little story about Mr Bradshaw, think it was the 94 season we played Oldham. Can't remember exactly what happened but Bradders either got sent off or got smashed by Mike Milligan, not sure which. At the end of the season Utd went on an end of season holiday to Ibiza and bumped into the Oldham team in a nightclub. I know for a fact that Bradders kicked the fuck out of Mike Milligan that night. Anyway a few weeks later they both ended up getting transferred to Norwich, would love to have been in the dressing room the day they next met.

Folk my age only remember Robson’s late career. Slow, dirty, injury-prone, sour-faced, yet worshiped by the media.

Robson around 84 - 88 was a terrific player, one of the best midfielders in the word, but the injuries knackered him and should never have played for England again after the Euro 88 debacle when Gullit ran him ragged.

He was an appalling manager though and it took us the best part of eight years to recover from.

We probably still haven't recovered. It certainly scarred McCabe who became far more cautious after seeing Robson blow his money on aging players with big contracts.

You have to seperate Robson the player from Robson the manager in my opinion, he was a superb inspirational player at his peak, but as a manager he was found wanting to say the least, but just because he was very poor for us that should not detract from what a great player he had been.

So what you’re saying is that Mitch Ward threatened to break Giggs legs and Giggs went scuttling off to snitch to Robson and ask for protection?

Sounds more plausible than the original story actually
