I'm sure in the past the referee has actually stopped the game when somebody in the crowd is blowing a whistle.
Mind you, he tried to make up for it by stopping play whilst we were in possession because there was a balloon on the pitch.

I remember it happened at BDTBL mid 70s against Man City. Referee think his name was Kirkpatrick or something similar, stopped the game for a few minutes till it was sorted. The game was on MOTD that night think it was a 3-3 draw.

Surely a better protest would be to stay away en masse. An empty stadium except for the away fans on TV seems more effective than a bunch of twats running on to the pitch and disrupting the game.

It was against Man City but not the 3-3 draw in February 1972. It was in the Anglo-Scottish Cup in August 1974. Jim Brown had just taken a goal kick and someone in the old John Street had blown a whistle which annoyed TC. He booted the ball to the back of the stand. The ref had a word with a copper who was patrolling the John Street area before play resumed with a drop ball. We won 4-2 that evening with TC scoring twice. Denis Law was playing in his penultimate match of his career

I thought we were the only winners in the final 15 minutes and we hit the post twice and their keeper made two good saves, but he still said the stoppage came when Coventry were 'in the ascendancy' which is frankly a load of old bollox.

Coventry have now made their point and the punishments will now follow courtesy of the FA. If trouble was expected then the FA should recommend that hone games this season be played with 2 sides of the ground open instead of 4. This way the shortage of stewards would be more effective in controlling the crowd. This is one way of showing sympathy without hurting the genuine trouble free supporter.

Although having lots of sympathy for Coventry fans, sanctions will surely be taken against Coventry
if not it gives fans licence to do it again and next time it could turn violent, luckily it went off peacefully but that surely has to be

Exactly. What if a nut job (or nutters) had decided to run onto the pitch with the protesters and attack our players or staff while police and security stood with their hands in their pockets? Every club has them, could they really vouch for every fan on the pitch?

Also what will happen if fans of other clubs run onto their pitch in a future home game and say that they're just protesting over some shite? Would they be arrested for a public order office as soon as they set foot? How would the police swing that? A precedent has now been set and witnessed live on TV, and I think some sort of message needs to be sent out or it will happen again and continue to happen maybe at other clubs. We also need to hear from their police and security. If they expected the pitch invasions to happen (as well as the ref's whistles and throwing tennis balls) but decided they'd take no action, why wasn't our club and fans informed in advanced? It was like some dirty little secret that they kept to mug as many Blades out of their ticket money, knowing full well the game would be a farce.

How in the 70s fans used to be on the pitch all the time, and then how the fences went up to stop it, and then after all the shit at hillsborough (rip) the fences came down and life bans were the punishment for pitch invaders..... now are we going back to cages and fences or are they going to impose bans on these cretins, because they're selfish childlike action might just drag us back to the dark ages, hit those twat's with the bans they deserve......

We can not afford to be caged in again for a few selfish idiots, the car park where the directors park is enough, or was it about getting their mug on tv....

This was definitely a Saturday afternoon as this was the first league match I ever went to. Remember the ref taking the players off. I am sure it ended 1-1

Every time the sweet FA has an opportunity to impose a fine, they will. Those old men at the FA just use every such chance to fleece clubs and line their own pockets.

So expect a fine. Along the lines of not being able to control their fans.

The people blowing actual whistles should have been reprimanded as well. It was just ridiculous, they were seen on tv and often the players didnt know if it was the refs whistle or not.

That decision to give the ball back to them to punt it down field when we were on the attack because of a balloon was ludicrous.

Those days are gone ,when refs had personalities ,Clattenburg tries but soon gets told if he has some banter ,especially when precious wankers like Obi Mikel and Lallana go running to the press because they feel damaged.
