Seems like that might have been the plan perhaps. A relatively cheap, low risk signing who was reasonable cover but maybe we've got a bit more play in the budget to get a better option this window?

It was a convenient deal for all parties.

Short, low wage contract. Provided League 1 level cover for 2 positions. The lad kept himself in the game/shop window, plus keeping himself fit so potential suitors wont have that to worry about.

Well he was exactly what was needed at the time. Cheap, short term and covered many positions.

At the time he was signed Basham was still competing for a start in midfield. With Carruthers signing, I suspect Basham will now be used solely in defence, and an extra wingback as rumoured would eliminate the need to keep Brown around for that role too. Understandable signing, sensible departure.
