Yep - although people can be forgiven for forgetting him.

I always though Ched cost £3m when we signed him first time around.

I thought it was "a deal worth" £3m, and that we actually paid more like £500'000-ish?

How much for Billy 2nd time around, thought it was 2 million for him in the drunken bums reign

I don't think Mogadon Man (aka 'the drunken bum') wanted him. I heard it was a Turry Robinson buy. As DoF he fancied himself as a 'proper football man' and convinced KM of Warnock's big mistake in selling him.

Mogadon Man dutifully played him out of position for a few months before benching him. Blackwell came in and being the master tactical genius he was, also played a game totally unsuitable to Billy. He was then shipped off to Donny at a loss .

Billy did the only thing he knows how and scored goals for Donny, under a manager who believed in him.

Another United master class in wasting medium amounts of money.

So in that case, does this sound right for the last 10?

Egan (over £4m) 2018
Beattie (£4m) 2007 - £5.28m
Davis (£3m) 2006 - £4.13m
Akinbiyi (£1.75m) 2005 - £2.48m
Deane (£1.5m) 1997 - £2.60m
Hutchison (£1.2m) 1996 - £2.14m
Gayle (£700k) 1991 - £1.43m
Jones (£650k) 1990 - £1.40m
Beesley (£300) 1990 - £648k
Morris (£170k) 1989 - £402k

I've adjusted for inflation using the Bank of England calculator which only runs up to 2017. Looks like Beattie (adjusted is most expensive of these).

And of course the record signing in 1978 would have been Diego Maradona, but the then Board would not sanction the fee... in fairness, Dalglish had just gone for £440k, but even though is there some great dose of calm down unadventurous powder kept in the boardroom tea cupboard??

When I became a committed Blade in 1970, at the time our record signing was John Tudor (£65,000) (£1.07m in todays money) in November 1968. Next one was Chris Guthrie (£90,000) (£718k in todays money) in 1975 then Sabella (£160,000) (£873k in todays money) in 1978, Mark Morris (£170,000) in 1989, Paul Beesley (£300,000) in summer 1990, the tosser (£650,000) in Sept 1990, Gayle (£700,00) in Sept 1991. Hutchison was our first £1M signing in 1996?

You could have added this one to the list:

Alf Common (£325) 1901 - England international, scorer in winning Cup Final team. Sold to Sunderland in 1904 for £500 leaving the club with a tidy profit. Sunderland then flipped him 6 months later to Middlesborough for an unheard of £1000, a world record fee in those days.

Plus ca change.

£325 in 1901 is £38k in todays money - bargain.

£500 in 1904 is equivalent to £58k.

i remember Bill scoring four(?) goals against QPR(?) in one game and then Blackwell moved him to the wing for the next game. wtf??

Richard Cadette - £125k, 4 foot 9 inch target man. Most money to come from Blades Revival? Seem some fucking shit in my time but this one took the biscuit. Saw him outside Scunthorpe’s old ground in 1987 after a pre season friendly. He was wearing a suit that would look have looked too big on Brian Deane. The 87/88 side, fuck me, I need a Valium to calm my nerves down.

Blades Revival, kin ´ell I’d forgotten about that. That mad night at the Top Rank.

Anyone remember the Star back page from around 1995 before we signed Hutchinson.

Was something along the lines Blades set to break £1m transfer fee and it suggested we were looking at either Rob Ullathorne or Phil Masinga from Leeds

Really stuck in my head that one. That and also the Nearly signed Hamilton Ricard back page too

Also I never get why the Brayford transfer is so despised. The club signed a player who was amazing in his loan spell and loved the club and the fans loved him. It was a huge show of intent if not miss judged.
