£13m is nothing for Shaqiri. He’s not a player you’d look to for consistentancy & having in the trenches with you, but he’ll be an impact sub/cup player. The money will be recouped quickly. It’s probably eaten up in a top 4 league placing & a decent champs league campaign. Liverpool spending over £70m all in on a above average keeper is the bad transfer.

Caramel is a great defender, but Maguire is a lot better than a ‘good, solid stopper’. Despite any limitations he may have, he is visibly improving and adapting to ever increasing levels of football. Which is near miraculous. He is also relatively young and well worth £50m in today’s money. Also if you are playing 3 cb’s it’s nice to have a mix, bread, ham & mustard. :)

Apologies, just noticed the predictive text spelling for 'varane'. No offence intended.

Definitely not. We’d signed Vinnie Jones before that for around £650k.
Hoyland was bought before the first division season started. Vinnie joined after.

I think Brian Marwood (edit: or Beesley depending on order they arrived) broke the Hoyland transfer record (£300k?) and then vinnie broke that one.

The previous top transfer was from the fourth division I believe, £160k for Alan Young.

So in that case, does this sound right for the last 10?

Egan (over £4m) 2018
Beattie (£4m) 2007
Davis (£3m) 2006
Akinbiyi (£1.75m) 2005
Deane (£1.5m) 1997
Hutchison (£1.2m) 1996
Gayle (£700k) 1991
Jones (£650k) 1990
Beesley (£300) 1990
Morris (£170k) 1989

Jamie Hoyland before Beesley, I bet you 10p. Pemberton was around the same time too for £300k but not sure if before or after Beesley who I think was quoted at £375k.

We really don't spend a lot do we?

Apart from the bargain basement Koz.....we're like that old married couple who make sure the bills get paid, and if we can afford it we're able to pay for a yearly holiday in Cornwall as a treat.

I think that like most Blades, yesterday's purchase of Egan for a reported £4 million took us all by surprise. Great news of course, and let's hope it's the beginning of an era where we broaden our transfer horizon. For far too long we've been behind the curve where buying players is concerned, which says volumes for Wilder's acumen in finding quality players who have enabled us to progress.

In the 8 o clock news on Talksport Ian “The Mouse” Abraham’s announced some breaking news

He said

‘Sheffield United have broken their transfer record by having a 5 million pound bid accepted for Ipswich’s Martin Waghorn”

We need to stop this kind of behaviour right now! The avenues of my unhappiness are being slowly closed off. :(

Very impressed with Egan, from my limited knowledge of him, we appear to have paid under market value for a very good player at this level, potential to improve and ‘step up’ and the right age.

Not 100% sure about Waghorn, he’s the type of player who gets more attractive as the price gets lower. If true, £5m seems expensive (they wanted £7.5m), but I suppose spread over the total value of our squad, you win some, you lose some. He’s 28 as well which is probably 3 yrs too old in my eyes as it cuts down the potential resale, but hey, that’s £9m in two days. If a rumour surfaces about us signing Dylan Bronn or Marvin Spielmann in the next couple of days, I may have frapped myself into a sweaty mess by the start of the season. :D

It’s true that it was announced as breaking news on Talksport during the 8am news....I don’t play games.

I’ve read the internet and there’s no report anywhere else, so it’s a bit weird that Talksport announce it as breaking news if it’s false.

Surely must be summat to it if they've decided to run it?

APOLOGIES........APOLOGIES

The Talksport transfer news has been on again.

The direct quote is
‘Sheffield United have made a record 5 million pound bid for Ipswichs Martin Waghorn”

Just says a bid is in, not that it’s been accepted, sorry.

Hmmmm. All info I can find suggests it was £700k. Was Jones less than that then?

Various figures tend to get quoted for every transfer, but I recall Jones' figures varying between £575k and £700k, and Gayle's figures varying between £700k and £800k. I think Gayle was regarded as our record signing at the time and probably stayed that way until Kendall arrived with McDonald's chequebook.

So how did these players do as record signings?

Beattie (£4m) 2007 - a goal every two games before a typical McCabe sale at a loss to Stoke, who used him to stay up whilst we lost the playoff final with his namesake Craig "Shit Bastard" Beattie up front on his own
Davis (£3m) 2006 - calamity Claude. Not quite good enough for the Prem and some of his errors harmed our survival chances. Luckily a gullible Derby gave us our money back and they did even worse.
Akinbiyi (£1.75m) 2005 - a couple of vital goals as we went up (at the Sty and Derby) but his arrival coincided with our stutter and we did not improve till we dropped him. Not good enough in the Prem and we sold at a loss
Deane (£1.5m) 1997 - had a good half a season before he became part of the Charles Green Fire sale on Black Thursday. Benfica took years to pay us which only made it worse
Hutchison (£1.2m) 1996 - good player, was influential in us escaping relegation trouble in 1996 and had some great games in 1997 but there was always the feeling he should have done better. Sold on after 2 years as his wages were too much
Gayle (£700k) 1991 - gave us 4 good seasons and was vital in avoiding relegation in 1992 and 1993. How we missed him when he had a long layoff in the relegation year. Injured quite a lot
Jones (£650k) 1990 - took a decent long throw, fouled people a lot, clapped his hands a bit. What a disappointment. That we won all 4 games he missed is telling. Sold after one season
Beesley (£300k) 1990 - never outstanding but gave us a number of solid seasons
Morris (£170k) 1989 - did well in our promotion season, didn't cut it in the top flight (played 14 times and never on winning side I think) and farmed out to Bournemouth

Just realised I've named our ten most expensive players, not our last ten record signings.

You missed out the feighting tosser that Blackwell signed. I thought he was £2.2m and 'Razor Davis only £2m?

I could be wrong though . I was once.

Our last 10 record signings add up to less than £18m (or around 2 Jordan Rhodeses). I'm not sure whether to be proud or miffed!

You could have added this one to the list:

Alf Common (£325) 1901 - England international, scorer in winning Cup Final team. Sold to Sunderland in 1904 for £500 leaving the club with a tidy profit. Sunderland then flipped him 6 months later to Middlesborough for an unheard of £1000, a world record fee in those days.

Plus ca change.

United were not pleased about the sell on, particularly given that Common came back to the Lane with Boro and scored the winner soon afterwards. Common had said he wanted to go back to Sunderland for non football reasons and United thought they had been duped.

Common was an interesting player in that he followed the money a bit more than was typical at the time.

That's where the blueprint for future transfer dealings involving us must have originated!

I think you're all forgetting to add Luton Shelton to your million pound plus lists, I can fully understand why though.

I still haven't decided which the more stupid move was: us to by him for 1.8 million or Valergen to buy him back for a million.

sobering reading this eh lads?
either the whole league except us is about to go bust or we’re the cheapest bastards on the planet?
