Rammers

The narrative on ramsdale is that he’s the thing that caused an excellent defence from last year to crumble. That’s not true for a whole host of reasons but he’s the obvious change between this year and last. Also I don’t think I’m being particularly paranoid when I say that there’s something to the fact that we’re inherently unfashionable and that playing for us hurts your England chances the same for Henderson last year when he was in better form.
I also don't think it's unfair to suggest he's one who's been added due to Pope's withdrawal so of course will be the first to drop out.
I'm not sure it would say that much if he didn't make the cut, and his social media posts yesterday would suggest he thinks the same.
Johnstone is older, and more experienced (albeit at a lower level) and will probably play Premier league football next season
Rammers is younger, from my perspective a better 3rd choice keeper who's unlikely to play, he'll be a good pro, already had a good relationship with Hendo and has more experience at PL level but I'm biased as I want him to go but I can see the why Johnstone gets the nod.

Yeah like I said further up stats wise you can barely fit a fag paper between ramsdale and Johnstone. Rammers would make sense as a 3rd keeper you’re right for reasons of having a succession plan in place but I can see the argument for cutting him. I just don’t think it’s as clear cut as the athletic journalists seem to think.

But are we inherently less fashionable than West Brom? Probably like two peas in a pod.

Though Johnstone came through Man U, so he must be better, eh? 😉

Johnstone has better pedigree as you point out. West Brom are more fashionable imo they’ve been in the consciousness of the premier league media frenzy more often and for longer periods than us.

Fag paper between them as has been said.

Johnstone is a good keeper. Let's not be willfully blind about this. But he has had more thumpings and he has had more goals go in the onion bag which he was protecting.

The real shame is that Pickford is seen as an uncontested shoe in. He's had a shit season with Everton and his highlight seems to have been injuring Virgil Van Dyke.

The lads a "keeper"... i.e don't sell him.
Problem for us is,this is the kind of subliminal message that England managers like to send to players in Rammers position, which is get yourself a move back to the PL and you're in my thoughts.

Many of the people who doubted him were watching him unable to catch and have no idea when or how to come off his line.

Being a fan entails supporting players publicly and being happy for them when they turn it around.

But we’re entitled to criticise in private and he was rubbish at the start of the season. An improvement and inclusion in a provisional England squad doesn’t change that in my view.
I thought he was awful until Christmas because he was.

I'd never seen him much before that.

Ive changed my mind because he's changed his performances. Well done to him

Misses out according to BBC

Not really a surprise and unless one of the other 3 picked up an injury in training camp it was always going to be Rammers who missed out, he wouldn't have been in the initial 4 if Pope was fit. Great experience though and what a confidence booster for the lad.

It's fair enough, Johnstone did well too, and neither would have played barring catastrophe, but I do feel like Ramsdale would have been the better choice as one for the future, getting involved in a tournament at a young age etc

Thought that Johnstone would get in. He's done well too when I've seen him. Still will have been a positive experience for Rammers.

Not saying Rammers should have got the nod, but .......... if we are relying on Pickford we will win fuck all.

1 good game then 3 dodgy ones.

Both are quality but you could.argie Johnstone was the more consistent over the entire season

Was the most likely decision but given how Southgate wants players committed to the U21s I though he may take him as he’s most likely to be involved in future tournaments. Johnstone at 28 and still to earn his first cap (which I’d think he may do with a token 20 mins before in one of the friendliest) won’t make another tournament squad.

Even without Ramsdale, have there ever been so many ex Blades in the England squad for a major tournament?

Henderson
Maguire
Walker
Coady
Calvert-Lewin

3 of them United fans at that.

England squad looks weak to me despite all the hullabaloo about how much talent we have.

I agree, lacks the wow factor and who is nailed on world class talent: Kane maybe? Mount maybe (inexperienced), Grealish maybe (no European or title winning experience), TAA (only 12 caps bizarrely). Sterling can't get a game for Man City. Rashford is not a natural finisher. Quite a few question marks there.
Goalie is weak, defence is all right backs and no depth or stand out left back, slow centre backs, midfield is likely to be stuffed full of defensive midfielders.
But it's good to see Foden and Grealish in there and also Bellingham for some go forward through the middle of the park. You'd like to think we could get to a semi (wahey) but I just don't think we have the stand out players to win it.

Pretty fucking tasty as an offensive unit and young but with good club experience. We’re weak as piss at centre half but it’s not like there are alternates right now.
I could get excited about this side, but I was never expecting to win it. That’s just daft.

Think it’s a case of ‘fuck it we’ll score more than you’. Which is ok against the likes of us. However, think you’ll come unstuck when you come across a talented defence.

He won't play that though.

It'll be Henderson and Rice getting in each others way in the middle, Grealish wishing he was in Zante on the bench, and Sterling hitting row ZZ after taking it off Kane's boot.

He will play John Stones though, who is the modern day Claude Davis.

We always seem to fall short in one area. In the “golden generation” days we struggled to find someone to play on the left of midfield, often tried to cram three attacking midfielders into the team until Scholes said “bollocks to this”, found a decent defensive midfielder in Hargreaves, only for him to get injured a lot but we always had good centre halves and keepers (until the end of that era when we started ruining keepers). Now we’ve got plenty of wide attacking players but we’re light on centre halves and hoping for a better goalie than the T-Rex. I’ve got to the point where I don’t expect to see England win a major tournament in my lifetime.
