Pre match pubs not what they were.

Used to enjoy most of the pubs on London Road but as others have said most gone. Golden Lion is ok. Railway/Cricketers close but both bit muck of nettles really. Ditto for Sheaf.

I like Sheaf View further afield and Crown aint bad.

I tend to in Red Lion in town and sometimes Rutland.

Not sure what they have done to Old Monk (used to be crap but now even worse).

Town to me has a dearth of decent old school pubs now. Kelham island and Sharrow Vale excellent but both too far from Lane to walk to on a match day really.

Enjoyed pre match drinks. Tried the Albion amongst others and was a good atmosphere. Went in the Sheaf and Golden Lion after the match, plenty of good old faces in. A very enjoyable day was had. UTB

What about the prawn sandwiches in the posh seats T?? Was good in the Lion after, did you go in the Copthorne?
Me and our kid went in the now infamous Box 5 manic in there.
Ended up in the Lion for a couple of hours after.

Bus into town,3pints in pump,3pints in fannys,2 pints of eggy ward's and a piss in the standard.
Miss those Saturday's.

I don't really have a routine I just go wherever I fancy. My Dad though was a creature of habit so when I went with him it was always the golden lion which I didn't mind but getting to the bar is a pain. Yesterday I had a few beers in Rotherham then got the train to town and met a few lads in the Lord Nelson, it's like having a beer in someone's front room. I stopped going to the Scholar (whatever it's called now) can't have a pint pot as it's dangerous but can have a big f*** off glass jug!

Used to like Barry's but not been for a while, been in Copthorne a few times as although it's expensive it's easy to get served and it's a decent pint of Stella in there.

After match it's usually one in the cricks and then up to Devonshire green / West St.

Driving - call for one or two in Red Lion near Arundel Gate. Barnsley bitter and fit barmaids.
Bus or lift - either Royal Standard or lately meet mate in Beer Engine, good ales but not cheap! Getting to be a bit too popular now too.

Post match meet wife in Sheaf Island for whatever ales are guesting (particularly like Adnams Broadside or a pale ale called Kaldo by Chantrey).

Cheers LS26BLADE

When you get to my age middle aged is almost a compliment.

The Rutland aint what it used to be though.

Choice and quality of ales and food both going down and prices going up.

The old management have moved on and I think that there is an air of complacency about the staff in the place these days.
I think the Saints fan who owned the Rutland now owns the Crown and Albion.

Parcel Yard at Kings Cross (opens early). 3 or 4 different craft ales in a bottle brought from The Beer Shop in Canterbury on the train (Munich OktoberFest ales will be arriving soon), one in Sheffield Tap, Slutty Rutty Butty in The Rutland (usually with a cider as it cuts through the grease well) and Fanny's for atmos before the game.

Return journey will be a bottle of wine, currently favouring decent St Veran as can't quite stretch to Montrachet, washed down with whatever tapas are in the M and S at the station.

An ale session of two halves!

Or if staying at home for the weekend walk down to Broadfield, walk to The The Sheaf View, chip butty at 'A Salt n' Battered', down to Railway. After game, always The White Lion in Heeley and then The Byron to catch the post match talk, the live game (Byron) and real Sheffield atmos.

Ps keep meaning to try the Polish bar near where The Royal used to be as quite like strong Polish ale and their hard drinking culture. Anyone tried their Wodka ?

Canterbury Tales never sounded so good :)

You sound like one of the very few Blades who appreciate good real ale? You've now got a fabulous Brewery tap on Shoreham street. Couldn't be closer to the ground (well it could be I suppose - but it's like 5 mins walk). The choice and quality of beer and food in there is excellent- but it's not cheap. Don't tell anyone from Sheffield but sometimes you have to pay more to get good quality things.

Cerberus, spot on. Decent ale (and increasingly wine) is what life is about. I love going to away games and sampling the local beer and pubs. Last season it was actually more about the day out than watching the games. Thanks for the tip and will try that one, what part of Shoreham St is it please?

However, there is a group of like minded Bladeale fans who do tend to head to the Good Beer guide pubs either in the town of the match or en route. They also seem to be a loyal group of fans who enjoy banter and ale as much as The Blades and are a million miles from our Ketchup throwing nobs. Always good to exchange ale house tips too, as many of us are living away from Sheffield and have good local knowledge of what is hip and happening on the ale front around the country.

And do have to admit that the ale seems to be tasting so much better this year. Thanks Chris!

The Scholar doesn't do the plastic glasses anymore. If they do use them sometimes (maybe big games if they run out of glasses or I guess police maybe sometimes advise it) they're those solid ones not the shit squidgy ones you get at half time! Decent beer now as well and still pretty cheap and nice food.

I've refused to use the Scholar since they outed themselves as Wednesday sympathisers last May......

Yes there was that! I suggest moving on and accepting the apology of the owner (think he's Canadian) as it being an error of judgement. The manager works hard to make it a decent place as I'm sure all pub managers/landlords do. Looks like hard work to me.

I've been going in years just think it was a good atmosphere but the beer was crap. Now there's decent beer I think it's a great matchday pub and have seen it improve under the new management. The last thing anyone who enjoys a pre/post match pint should want is another pub to go the same way as The Tramway, Sportsman (god I miss that place!) and Sheldon etc have, whether it's a pub they use or not.

Why exactly did the Sportsman " go south" as they say ?

Why exactly did the Sportsman " go south" as they say ?
Refer to the Students thread ,it is now going to be flats ,so rather than enhancing the nightime experience of Sheffield in this instance they are moving it all up West St. Carnage.

I imagine because it only really did any trade on a Saturday when the Blades were at home. I did like it there though so it's a shame it's gone. No doubt worth more as flats.

The Golden Lion is going downhill, after Lee left just over a year ago the new incumbents had a good go, but they have left as 23 guaranteed decent trading days can't be enough to sustain a business. And the new lot running it seem to be holding tenants, just in place til the Pubco owner finds another sucker to fleece.

It's a nice little backstreet boozer, but I fear it's days are numbered.

It was OK on Saturday.
