Who are the players we should be looking to move on in the summer?

It’s clear we’ve not got ‘a barrel of money’ so we may need to wheel and deal.

Lafferty is one.

On the assumption we dont go up. Id assume Donaldson, Wilson, Sharp will move on. We may lose Fleck (promoted team maybe?). Jake Wright will probably go.

Everyone currently out on loan

Donaldson, Wright, Lafferty, possibly Sharp.

I would add to that who can’t we afford to lose?

I am sure that Fleck, Brooks and O’Connell will have admirers.

Blackman and Wilson - loan returns
Lafferty
Reed
Hanson and Hussey (can't believe we haven't got rid of those two permanently already)
Carruthers
Lavery
Thomas
Long, Heneghan, Slater and T.Smith - out on loan
Sharp - only if he wants to leave

Space for at least 5 new signings.

From our 'first team'. If we're looking to finish high up in the table we should be looking to bring in improvements on:

Basham - In the system that we play, his fitness isn't an issue, he'll bomb up and down all day long and get into good positions. He is however very poor on the ball, and scuppers out attacks too often. We'll need better here.

Stevens - In the first half of the season he was very good. I hope he'll get back to that form, but with Lafferty likely to move on, we should be looking for someone better. It's crucial that we recruit well in this position, as our wing backs are vital to the way we play.

Strikers - We're relatively strong in this area, but I expect if things continue as they are, Billy could leave, and Wilson is unlikely to stay. It'll take some serious graft from our team to unearth a gem here, but we're going to have to. (Unless Ched starts firing cliché.)

I'm confident that we have a very strong base of players. Our midfield is strong, and will only improve with the return of Coutts. Stearman and JOC are quality, and we have a nice mix of attacking players.

It's exciting to watch us build and improve. I expect us to continue doing so in more or less the same fashion during the summer.

  • We don't need any midfielders
  • We could do with a top quality keeper
  • A top quality striker
  • LWB (unless Freeman fits in there)
Think that's it. Should cost around approx £10m in normal circumstances but I expect our management to pick those 3 up for less than £3m easy :)

Impossible to tell until the end of the season. Anything could happen between now and then. If we change formation, it might change everything.

I do have a worry about the attackers though.

Clarke 32
Donaldson 33
Sharp 31
Duffy 32
Holmes 30

All tied up for at least another year. If none of them are performing, we have a huge problem. We can't afford to simply replace them whilst they remain at the club. No ones is going to buy them due to age or be prepared to match their wages.

Hopefully, most of them will continue playing well. If not, Chris is going to have a headache come summer.

Agree and although I love Bash I think we can get an improvement on him so I will go along with you and look to recruit there - think Bash will still say and get some game time every now and then. As we build we will inevitably have to lose some players that have been excellent for us - no room for sentiment on the CWAK roadshow.

We'll probably go for John Egan at CB. Another option for RCB and also for the middle.

In case we stay in the Championsship here some names from Ajax who would be a great addition to the squad I think:

Mitchell Dijks (AFC Ajax, leftback, Fee: Free transfer. Not sure If he would be down since he rejected Norwich last year, but last summer and this winter he couldn't find a club so maybe he lowers his demands.)

Noussair Mazraoui (AFC Ajax, allround midfielder, can also play in the attack or at the right back position if needed. Fee: Free transfer. This guy would be an outstanding signing and would be one of the best players from Sheffield United instantly I think. If you offer him a decent amount of money and a good perspective you should be able to sign him.

Kaj Sierhuis (AFC Ajax, striker Fee: Loan. All-round striker who just scores goals and goals and goals. Don't think he's ready for Ajax 1 next season, especially if Dolberg stays with us so he would be available for loan.

Far too foreign sounding for Hard Brexit Chrissy ;-)

£10m on its own won't afford you a "top quality striker", let alone the other 2 positions.

We should have, probably, intervened in Syria, but didn't do so because Blair/Bush had got us balls deep in Iraq by lying their arses off.

In a similar vein, any dipping into the Dutch league will bring everyone out in a cold sweat due to the "Higdon Factor".

That's going to be the most difficult player to find. Unless Wilson has been loaned with a view to a permanent (which I'm not convinced) and improves considerably, we'll probably have to look either abroad or find someone who can step up from the lower leagues. Both of these will be a gamble. Maybe it will have to be a 'Tammy Abraham' type loan.

Edit: I still think Broooksy is more of a striker than midfield so maybe, assuming we keep him, he plays up front. If we don't keep him we should have some cash to spend.

Wow!

I've seen people blame McCabe for all sorts of failings, but quite how SUFC are supposed to put together an army to enter the Geo Political sphere, I don't know.

LWB (unless Freeman fits in there)

Unless stevens form improves to back at the start of the season , Freeman and Baldock (if both fit at the same time for a change ) should both play and one should move to the left , as said above Wing backs are so important to the way we play and they need to be up to scratch on a consistant basis

saying about Baldock for a second, what a fantastic buy he has been , didn't cost much and when fit(Only issue really but hopefully behind him now) he has played a good 7/8 out of 10 most games IMO .

an improvement on Hanson type forward would be good - say what you want about him and what he does but he helped us cross the line last season and gave the defenders something else to worry about that other strikers don't do.
also we showed you don't have to just Hoof it to the big man , he was part of the team that played Bolton and Scunny amongst others off the park last season

a striker with amazing pace / can finish would be great also but they cost allot money unless we can unearth a gem !

think Bash will def still be around but also think Leonard may be used more and more in the RCB role

Have you ever seen Higdon doing something like this? ;)

Spend some fucking money, obviously.

You're right; and I would edge towards a permanent transfer over a loan, as i dont like the idea of having to replace your top goalscorer every year when they return to their parent club.

It could be a foreign buy, but I'm not sure we've got the scouting in place for that; I suspect we'll be looking for someone in Leagues 1 or 2.

It's could be fruitful as well, with the right scouting. Sam Winnall, Joe Garner, Sam Baldock, Britt Assombalonga, Scott Hogan, Callum Wilson, Andre Gray & Nahki Wells were all playing in L1/2 at some point in the last 5 years...

When Freeman was signed it was as someone capable of playing on either flank, and did play some games at left back, but not since CW arrived. If he could play LWB, with Baldock on the other side, that would be a pretty useful combination.

I know its only 1 game, but my memory of Freeman playing LB puts me in a state of panic.

He may be able to fill a gap, but id doubt he's the answer.

It's not who we move on which matters but who we keep. If we can hang on to Brooks, Fleck, Coutts (depending upon recovery), Moore, Baldock and JOC we can build a team around them and the rest are replaceable as far as I am concerned.

Alright Mazraoui is not possible anymore. The guy made a huge grow and now is official part of Ajax 1.
Dijks and Sierhuis are still possible tho. Dijks is really solid.

Mazraoui might be still possible on loan, signed a contract and starts today in the first 11, but think he's available on loan next year. And he's damn good. But gotta be quick.

A left-back is also needed and a fast striker. Maybe Umar Sadiq? (AS Roma)
