If that nifty pull-back across their defender had been a heavy touch and the ball was running away from him I might understand the temptation to go to ground, but clearly he'd turned him all ends up and would have been clear to pop it in the net with a clearer opportunity than a shot from 12 yards out. Also a yellow card for diving plus a lost opportunity to put us two up would have made him look a right plonker. His brief forays for us look like very determined and direct runs for goal with his head down and the ball very close to his boots - he doesn't look the type to go looking for penalties via theatrics but rather direct goal opportunities via showing defenders a very clean pair of heels. There was contact; it doesn't have to be a deliberate foul and it doesn't have to be heavy contact. Anyone who has played the game and gone full pelt past defenders (especially including a sharp left-hand turn like that) knows that the slightest of clips from an outstretched boot is enough to put you on the grass.
Come to think of it - my best mate from school was an expert at the gentle art of disguised ankle & toe tapping. He was a clever player, but a dirty git.

I mentioned Franny Lee in my other post. He was (I think) was the first British player who gained a reputation for diving and trying to con Refs, when he was at Man City late 60's and in the 70's, but I think it was prevalent in other countries before then, for instance some in South America.

But regarding players appealing for opposition players to be booked and sent off, feigning injury etc. I think that it started with certain European clubs and crept into our game possibly in the 90's. I remember finding it embarrassing at the time.

No you've got it the wrong way round. Mike Dean said in his after match interview that the Bolton No.5 lunged at Samie C with intent to foul him. Samie C took avasive action to avoid injury by going down, so I gave the penalty.

What do you mean by 'won' the penalty? Do you think he dived then? If so, it shouldn't have been given should it?

Drew the defender into an awkward position such that he was able to fall over his leg. Happens all the time.

Who cares how it came about I could not care less whether carruthers had done a Maradonna and took a piss on Mike Deans face as long as we scored.

The amount of stone wall penaltys we have been denied that have cost us dearly this season is unreal so I personally don't care.

Amazing how the 'Carruthers dived camp' has ruffled so many feathers; it's only an opinion on a small portion of a game which everybody is pleased we won.

look at the reaction of Wheater, he turns the opposite way and puts his arms out in the "never touched him, ref" way, now i'm no expert but unless he has eyes in the back of his head he has no way of knowing Samir is on his way down. His arms are fully out before he sees where the ball or Samir are, if he hadn't touched him why wouldnt he spin round quickly to try get the block in? For that reason, for me, its a penalty, due to Wheater's reaction whilst facing away from play. Had he not made contact with Samir, for all he knew Samir was still on his feet about to pull the trigger. From the kop it looked more clear then the camera angle on the video. Important to note the reaction of 2 other defenders (beevers, who slid in first) and the other defender who ends up with the ball, they don't appeal or waive away the penalty decision, they barely react at all meaning there must have been some contact or some noise indicating contact.

It was a dive. There is no contact. We'd be fuming if that was given against us.

We were when Rob Styles gave Liverpool one for 'intent' when Morgan challenged Gerrard in the box.In fact i think Benitez said it was clear penalty even if it was only a slight contact there was intent and not only that,he thought Morgan should have been sent off !!!

Actually it may not have been a pen but then the ref doesn't have the luxury of slow-mo to hand.

No complaints from me - we've had some of our stone-wall penalty claims denied in the past, so, I'll take it.

It'd be a lovely world if Carruthers had gone over to the Ref and said 'Sorry mate, I tripped over myself, it wasn't a penalty', or Coutts and Fleck never bent the Ref's ear to book an opposing player, or Sharp never went down the first time he felt a touch on his shoulder.

The problem is that every other team in the football league win dodgy penalties, some against us, and players go down like they've been poleaxed at the merest touch. Look at Bolton in the first half, their whole game was based around getting set-pieces.

We Brits don't like cheats. Diving Johnny Foreigner introduced it probably as far back as the 66 World Cup, and it was much despised at the time, but then the likes of Franny Lee started the trend for diving British players and Sir Alex and his ManU team perfected the art of influencing Refs. Slowly it worked its way through the league's and is part of the game now unfortunately. Any team now who wanted to play the commendable Brian Clough way for sportsmanship nowadays would frankly be at a massive disadvantage throughout a season. Football is a business and there has to be a level playing field. I'd love us to be the one team in football who's players never dived or moaned at the Refs, but if we were, we'd also have to accept that it would cost us points over a season.

As for this particular incident though, I don't think think it's that clear one way or another even after viewing it several times. Certainly it's not clear or obvious enough to spoil anybody's enjoyment of the game I'd have thought, but there you go, it's all abaaaaht opinions. UTB.

Awful awful dive. Not surprised Mike Dean awarded it!

I took great pleasure from the result yesterday but I took no pleasure whatsoever from the resulting penalty and goal, I don't like players cheating like that to win penalties, it looks ridiculous and we didn't need to. For me, it just took a little of the shine off the victory yesterday unfortunately!

The Bolton player INTENDED to foul Carruthers so its a penalty according to the Rob Styles refereeing book so its a penalty !!
