There was a notable drop off in quality though post Arctic Monkeys just through the sheer number of bands all trying to copy the formula.

I’m with you. These were the bands that properly got me into music. First heard Arctic Monkeys when I was 15/16 and for the next few years indie music was all I listened to and I spent the two years at college / sixth form going to gigs most weeks. That said, I never really liked Reverend and the Makers and nor did any of my mates, even while we lapped up other Sheffield artists to varying degrees like Milburn, Little Man Tate, Bromheads Jacket and the rest. I suppose Reverend was a little “different” but never did it for me particularly. A good frontman though, IMO.

I always liked Hard Fi , I went to Leeds to see them last year and I thought they were wank live

Can’t remember if I saw Hard Fi. As they were sort of early in that indie period and dressed a bit laddy, they always felt like they belonged in the decade before. A few semi-catchy tunes but was never particularly fond of them. Not claiming I only liked amazing/cool music mind - bands I was seeing all the time were the likes of the Metros, Fratellis, Rumble Strips, Larrikin Love, Milburn, The Holloways etc etc. All bands that hold special memories but I’d hardly ever listen to now!

Metros didn't they morph into FAT WHITE FAMILY?
I like all them you mentioned
Fratellis first album being a highlight

Yeah the singer was one of two frontmen in Fat White Family. A few members of the Metros joined at various points but it seemed a bit of a loose/chaotic band so members flitted in and out. The lead singer (Saul) was key in the group though until he had a big fallout with the other front man iirc. If you look up the lead singer these days, you can see he’s lost his way a bit - drugs have savaged him. His Instagram is a bit of a state!

Also big fan of the Fratellis first album. Loved it.

Literally from just up the road from me. Saw them in London somewhere can't remember where now. David Guest was dancing away in the balcony that night which didn't seem like an obvious mix!
 
Initial euphoria soon replaced by disappointment when we realised it's the same weekend as the bearded theory festival😕

Just spoke with lads and lasses from hull they all coming over and a few from Belfast I know.
He's better since going solo .
This is paradise for an old man like me and one not to ever miss .
It'll be as good as pigs 2 blades 4 .

Happy for you Derby! Heaton is a great artist and a proud Unitedite.

Never heard anything from the Housemartins but the Beautiful South is a great band.

Housemartins were brilliant and Paul was a regular af the lane back then .
If I had one dying wish it was to see them at bramall lane . Paul had got better aswell since going solo , the songs manchester and quicksand are unreal.

May not be Housemartins but Paul Heaton at Bramall Lane might be the next best thing Derby.

Housemartins were brilliant , my era my time
Beautiful south were as I grew older
This old town song amazing.
Since heaton gone virtually solo or duet his writing has become better .
My bloody phone ain't stopped with messages from hull lads and lasses and I think I might open a hotel for the night .
I'm big pals with a producer and d j from Belfast and they will be over .
You have to buy t-shirt or album of dvd to qualify but I'm more or less sorted so the dream had come true

Saw him with Jacqui at Stockport FC a few years ago, then again at the Winding Wheel in Chesterfield. A few other times back in the Beautiful South days too. Fantastic live band.
I went to see the Housemartins at TC's testimonial (Paul Heaton had a great game at left back too). so will be full circle.
I think I first heard them on John Peel (Fish City Five?).
Goes without saying too, what a top guy he is.
 
He was in the same hotel as me in Majorca a couple of years ago. Kids had Blades shirts on and this bloke came and said “up the Blades”. Then I realised it was Heaton with his swim shorts on.

He looks different without glasses and an anorak.
