39 years ago, I saw PH with Stan, Norman & Hugh, playing on a temporary stage that had been built part way up the John Street terrace, with my old man, (who albeit passed away 4 years ago a week on Friday) but gave me my love for music and Dem Blades, and because he was a bit of an old radical, loved the Housemartins, what they stood for, and the content of their songs.
Yesterday night, I got my chance to go with my nephew to see him again, who bless him, had got me the ticket along as a Christmas present. What's more, yesterday corresponded with what would have been the auld fella's 82nd birthday.
To someone who played his Hull 0 London 4 tape until it wore out, it was like being transported back, and this old man felt young again. He also sung his bloody heart out along the next generation of the family, and what's more, because of the day, it meant so much.
Music has that effect sometimes.. and after the lowest lows of Saturday, this made up for so much...
PS My claim to fame is PH also fell on top of me in a heap of others when Dane Whitehouse scored the equaliser in the cup v Arsenal in 1995.
