Back in the early 60's when they thought we'd all be riding monorails, and flying around in hover cars it seemed only fitting that we'd need futuristic housing as well. Cue Futuro Housing in of all places Todmorden, a village in West Yorkshire where they started building futuristic houses in conjunction with a Finnish designer.

Sadly they never took off (almost a UFO based pun there) as I think they look great. Weird to see them being transported through the old town. Quite a contrast...

They look like the sort of thing Roger Dean was designing as well. In the end, his design for the interior of Upstairs At Ronnie Scott's was about all we ended up with.

Meanwhile, I remember when I saw the monorail at Skeggy Butlins in 1970, I thought this was the future, right here, right now.

The one in Seattle was built in 1962 for the Worlds Fair and still looks pretty cool. It runs for less than a mile and despite the constant talk of extending it, it'll likely never happen. I usually hop on it when we're down there, just because it's there really...

Monorails should have been the biggest thing EVER! Five years after Skeggy Butlins, we found ourselves at Beaulieu Motor Museum, and yet again here was a monorail, so aged 9, there's me thinking that monorails were everywhere and would soon take over the world. I probably even fantasised about boarding a monorail at Banner Cross and getting off at Bramall Lane. When my dad told us that they were going to build a flyover from St Mary's Gate to the M1, I was beside myself with excitement, the only twinge of sadness being that it would be a road and not a monorail.

Back to the monorail at Beaulieu Motor Museum, if I'd realised in 1975 that it had only been opened a year earlier by the Wombles, I'd have been even more in awe of it.

Nominative determinism in action looking at who scored for them against us…

Does nobody remember the precursor to Supertram?

Two potential suppliers – EASAMs and Hawker Siddeley Dynamics – supplied concepts for the project. Architects Robert Matthew Johnson-Marshall were commissioned to compile preliminary designs.

The government simultaneously provided funding to British Rail to research the feasibility of a ‘Maglev’ (magnetic levitation) solution on the same route.

A resulting proposal was publicly exhibited on the third floor of Cole Brothers department store in 1974....."

Yes, I came across this when I was looking for info about the proposed St Mary's Gate-M1 Flyover. This is my favourite photo.

I remember when I was really little and my mum and dad were never affluent enough to own a car, never did to be honest. When the Sheffield Works Weeks came around we always made the early morning trip from Firvale to Pond Street to make the journey to Great Yarmouth on the SUT coach. Magical days and as soon as I got old enough, still ridiculously young for going all over the shop, me and a couple of mates would go to the away games on the old SUT.

I loved those old coaches, and the good old days to be honest but looking at some of these it looks like they were pretty basic by comparison ...

Could have been worse though, could have been this...

Yes, at Elland Road

I was there together with my dad , cousin and uncle who took us there in his brand new Rover , which at the time was almost the height of luxury .

Instead of using the newly opened M1 extension as many did , he insisted on going the way he had always done via Huddersfield and this turned out to be a very astute decision , leading to us enjoying several pints in the LUFC Social Club before kick off while thousands were stranded on the Motorway and missing most of the first half .
