The publication I remember most from being a young lad with great affection was Charles Buchan’s Football Monthly.

From being around 9 years old my Dad used to buy it for me every month, even though looking back we were totally skint.

It was a groundbreaking magazine , being in full colour and printed on high quality paper . It contained a wide range of information about all things football and having read every single word of it , I couldn’t wait for the next one to be delivered.

Anyone else remember it ?
Me and my brother had that delivered every month for several years. Every copy was read with enthusiasm, and after a couple of weeks I took out the best pictures, and added them to the autograph album. A highlight was a full-page picture of Bobby Charlton, which I got signed by the great man. The front cover of one of my beloved scrapbooks features (the battered remnants of) a colour picture of Cec Coldwell. 65 years ago, that was ground-breaking technology.IMG_8957.webp

When I started following football in 1970, I was impressed with my Uncle Ronnie's collection of Charles Buchan's Football Monthly so I "borrowed" a lot of them taking them home but never gave them back to him!

When it came to reading I had "gone off" from reading Marvel comics around that time so I started reading Score n Roar, Scorcher and then Shoot!
Scorcher & Score

I used to get Goal & Shoot every week and Football Monthly every month.. great magazines also as Silent says Tiger, Scorcher and Score, brilliant for autograph hunters. The annuals I mainly got were the Rothmans year book and The Topical Times Football Annual, cost a relative fortune!!

Do you remember a magazine called Scoop that came out late 70s? More general sport than specifically football but a decent read.

In one of the annuals did you find a photo of a Blade fan with a head wound and blood trickling over his face after he got hit by a brick during our home game against Man U in October 1967?

That will take some searching Silent. Do you know the annual and year?

Don’t know if you’re aware of this “Best of” book, Joe, which came out a few years back. Price on the back is £16.99 but there are secondhand copies on Abebooks etc. for a lot less.

I’ve photographed a specimen couple of pages from inside just to give a flavour and this includes (bottom left) one of my favourite ever shots of a packed - absolutely packed - terrace at Roker Park. Fantastic image.

Apologies for the slightly skew-whiff photos.

The image of Stanley Matthews on the front cover bring back wonderful memories of one of the most exciting and memorable football matches I ever saw , the 1953 FA Cup Final in which his team Blackpool were up against Bolton Wanderers, both of whom were a force to be reckoned with at the time .

Back then , very few households in England had a television but one of them was the family of my elder sister’s boyfriend who , knowing my passion for all things football even at the age of 12 , invited me to watch it with them .

This was in black and white on a 14 inch screen . The background to this match was that Matthews had had an illustrious career and was greatly admired , but an FA Cup Final medal had always eluded him and almost the whole nation were rooting for him to have one .

However , with only around 20 minutes to go , his team were 3 - 1 down but thanks largely to his almost magical performance in that period came out on top as 4 - 3 winners , resulting in great celebrations throughout the land.

Many thanks for bringing back those memories .

Same for me. Neighbours bought a tv for the Coronation, we went round for the Cup Final, and at the age of 6, I was immediately hooked. It gave me the idea to nag my dad into taking me with him to the Lane, and as Blackpool came to the Lane in September 1953, he caved in to my wish to see Stanley Matthews. Matthews on one side, Hagan in the red-and-white, a big crowd, what more could a kid want? And it turns out losing 4-3 prepared me for the many years of failure…
