Sitwell, the Empire theatre was on the corner of Charles Street and Union Street.
One of my early memories, in fact my first ever visit to see a live performance, was at the Empire. Is was the Aladdin pantomime with, I think, Jimmy Clitheroe.
It was also the first time I'd ever seen and heard live music. Oddly, one thing I've never forgotten is hearing the sound of the live cymbal for the first time. It's strange the snippets you remember the most.View attachment 106311

Was that where that indoor alleyway was from Pinstone St to Union St ? I think Sweeneys were in there but cant remember what it was called. What year did it go ,obviously not in the blitz if you went

Tennants were owned by Whitbread, one of the big 5 brewers.

Tetley (and Ind Coope) were owned by Allied.

They never stocked each others beers other than Guinness.

Mackeson is on that Tetley's list though - Whitbread bought the Mackeson brand somewhere around 1929

Gold Label was a fifties product created by Tennants before they sold out to Whitbread. Other barley wines existed but were dark in colour.

Both Bass and Whitbread brewed bottled Guinness under licence. Like Whitbread and Stones bitter, they had a different taste. Bass Guinness was slightly more bitter, and was the choice in our family as Sunday dinner time sessions started with a bottle or two. The label designs, tops etc were the same, the only difference being the brewery address at the bottom.

These foresaken days, Guinness West Indies Porter is the mainstay for me.

As a trainee I was sent out to Nigeria demonstrating David Brown Tractors. Before one demo out in the bush somewhere we were invited inside for a drink. It was very hot weather and the guy (unusually) had a fridge. Inside it were cold bottles of Guinness, brewed in Dublin and Lagos. I don’t remember the demo.

The first time spectators were allowed in the BLUT was v Sunderland in October 1966.

My dad did take me to a few matches in the 1960s. I remember looking at a bald man running over from the left wing to congratulate our scorer in the Lane End. Probably Bill Punton.

I can't remember much about The Empire, but I do remember going there in the late 1950s to see Lonnie Donegan. Strange how these old photos and comments jog your memory.

League Cup replay (yes, won by a Woody goal) was on 20/9/66. The League match when BLUT was used for the 1st time was 15/10/66. We won 2-0 (Jones, Reece)

Did we play Cardiff City that year?. First time in the BLUT was if memory serves against them and the stand was very new and as someone commented , was like sitting in the clouds.

Not quite the same but the Salvation Army Citadel building on Cross Burgess Street is, (admittedly not as ornate) a building with huge potential as a theatre or music venue.

I remember in the 1960 / 1970's there was a gunsmiths on West Bar. Arthur Turner.

Tickill Blade's photo of Suggs shows a van outside with Vidor painted on it. That reminds me of a Vidor T/V set we bought , in the early fifties. Used to run on Valves which took a couple of minutes to warm up before a picture appeared. The screen was 13 inches encased in a surround about 2 feet long and weighing a couple of stones. The thing was still going strong after 20 years of use and we had spent 4 old pence on 2 valves in that time. I heard , later, that Vidor were bought out by the Bush TV company.

Not coming from Sheffield and not really knowing many of the old photos but the names of people and place names jog my memories. Lonnie Donegan :My oldmans a dustman. Isn't that the tune of Jack O'connels magic? just for the younger Blades.
