I saw Joe Shaw, for your delectation.View attachment 99701Sorry, wouldn't load full photo, bottom half cut off. Try Getty Images but where exactly I couldn't help. Put your curser on the photo for details.

Many thanks and bornablade’s later post is exactly what I was going to write before I read it .

By ‘59 Billy Wright’s form was on the wane whereas Joe was at the peak of his powers and far better than the former , decent player though he had been .

Unfortunately for Joe , by then Wright had achieved ‘national treasure , cannot be dropped ‘ status like many others to follow , to the detriment of both the national team and the players who should have replaced them .

One of the greatest disappointments of my entire football watching experience is that of not having seen the great man pull on an England shirt and deliver the master class in defending which he undoubtedly would have done .

“ Joe Shaw - easily the finest centre half I ever played against .” Nat Lofthouse , The Lion of Vienna .

Bert wasn't at the game but he's had that programme over 50 years.
He's no idea how it got damaged.
Believe it was SB, recently posted a Pathe News of cup ties on a rainy day. Shots of the crowd showed hatless men with complete newspapers draped over their heads and one had made a pirate type hat from his paper just like we made as kids playing pirates.,
Thought that's what you may have done.

It's amazing that the 'suits' or 'blazers' at the FA still behave today as they did 60 years ago. Looking after their own.

Not criticising Southgate but he fits in nicely with those in the corridors of power. He won't upset things.

Watching the Anton Ferdinnand documentary the other night John Terry was interviewed by the FA as if he'd been the victim.

As one reporter described them 'It's white, pale and stale'.

Yep, rainy day, fewer survived.

Just found this on Facebook. Most places though much changed are still recognisable.

I don't remember the strike but at 17 I'd walk to town, for work, from Hollinsend and back without a thought.
I was hoping when filming on Waingate the camera would swing around to see the Norfolk Market Hall, but no, any how tremendous film, bringing back good memories.
Thanks for finding and posting.:)

Blades 2 Stoke 3. 9/10/71. We lost our top spot after that match
Thanks SB. that was my first game. 11 years old. TC scored an absolute pearler. He received the ball outside the area with his back to goal, turned on a sixpence and whacked it in the top corner. Poor old Gordon Banks never moved. At least I think that's what happened. It was a long time ago. I remember my uncle being suitably impressed

was at that game if i remember correctly didnt we have a goal ruled out at lane end for ball being out of play on goal line tc i think ?
Yes, the linesman flagged to indicate that the ball had gone out of play. Few minutes later Terry Conroy netted Stoke's winner

stoke had a good side in that era very similar to us and that was a cracking game went to the away game at the victoria ground later that season think they had won league cup week before and paraded it 2 - 2 draw if memory serves me right mind that was a hairy afternoon on open end especially when about 300 stoke fans invaded our end 10 minutes from time lol

Alan Warboys v Man U. 30/9/72. Badger playing in midfield at the time! Steve James and Willie Morgan the Man U players
Would you believe it. Walking with the dog along the river Dearne on Monday and coming towards me was the afore mentioned Alan Warboys . He looked well although he did have a walking stick.

My first visit to Wembley was the Stoke v Chelsea League Cup final which meant I missed the abandoned game at Highfield Road. I was at Victoria ground the week after to watch the 2-2 draw. Banks didnt play in the match at Victoria ground. I think he picked up an injury in the League Cup final.
