I missed your previous post on this - thanks for sharing this. Has yours survived? It has taken considerable cunning to ensure that ours has not been disposed of. And if it had fallen to pieces, it would now be suitable for the Jay Blades programme on TV - a family heirloom!
I think Our Kid (also of the dark side but never goes) has it.

Place right, A particular date/day of the year, it's seasonal.
Can you/anyone name the event.
Correct, and the Half a Crown question, the two teams.
I'd not heard of this traditional game. It's to commemorate the loss of a fishing boat in the late 1800s and is between fishermen and firemen (stokers originally). Apparently if your top hat comes off it's a free kick to the other side.

Spot on.
Thanks for the extra info, was wondering why firemen and didn't realise it was the loss of a vessel that spawned the game. No doubt there would have been a collection for the bereaved originally, that's how things were at that time.
Free kick for losing your hat, precursor of VAR.

A fishing smack,'The Evelyn and Maud' was struck by a much larger vessel during a bad storm in 1893, killing the four men on board. A fund was set up, and as part of the fundraising effort this football game was born. The original fund raised £289 which was deposited in a local bank for the families of the deceased to draw on when required.

Amazed:oops:. More than interesting info, what's your font.

With due respect, I don't believe those two names aught to be be used in the same sentence.
Both talented players, differing outlook on the game, plus I bet Grealish don't know what a 'U' bend is, never mind fixing one. :)
